OK... here's a question. How much work do you usually *really* do on your average work day? If you're like me, you fog out at least a few times a day, and some days can spend the whole day screwing off and doing nothing, or at least getting nothing done. So... on average, how much of a day do you usually put in?

Oh my god, you have my number.....anyone else think the same thing?

Well as a student at this time....I am totally addicted to wasting time...absolutely positively...and willing to admit it....what are you going to do...arrest me??? :) So my answer would be the last one....and to change it to my own circumstances it would be:

STUDY??? I thought I was in school to surf the net.......(and so paying thousands of dollars to surf the net)

BUT.... when I get that first job....yes this could pose a problem...BUT I know I will need to have a good attitude....a changed attitude.....realizing they are paying me to work...to deal with patients...to care for them...and so yes a little down time is okay...but basically I will be getting paid to work....true?

Okay who else would care to answer this honestly???

I actually get a lot done at work because it's fast-paced and keeps my mind pretty occupied. It's just when I get home that I can't get anything done. My house looks like a bomb went off and tonight I felt helpless to do anything about it. I forced myself to do the dishes, but that's it.

I'm with you misclee. I get a lot done at work because it's a physical job and I really like it but when I get home , forget it. I'm either on the comp or watching tv. Too easily sidetracked from what needs to be done. I have to make a real effort to get the laundry and dishes done.

I can spend hours in my office and get 20% of what anyone else would have gotten done............

But, the boss is pretty cool about it........................(I'm self employed). :)

I can waste almost a whole day at times. I do perform when I need to...The big projects I shine....the valleys of boredom are more difficult....I would rather be dancing on the chaos of busyness, projects coming out my ears than hunting for something to do.....lately I have been writing poems in the slack moments, hours, at work.

Sometimes I feel a fraud other times I feel like the star that they think I am. One thing I do know, I got an excellent review, rasise and company bonus.

James: I appreciate your honesty....very much...and incidentally bummer here...there were a ton of posts here...obviously many were lost. I do INTENSE work, then slack off...INTENSE work...then slack off....that's my pattern. And will probably be when I start working...When I'm in the middlel of something, I give it 150%.....I can relate to feeling of being a fraud and sometimes feeling like a star....I felt like that in school a LOT....

I used to be in Quality Control were it was a lot of useless paper work so the bosses could show every body else, how much work they got done,

We did the physical work and paper work and they grabed the glory for the actual work done. Isn't that the way of life.

I found myself getting little done as I lost interest in the work when I figured out that it was all politics and that managment really didnt care about solving the problems, Only making themselves look good in there constant meetings.

To solve that problem I changed jobs to driving a Big Truck which involves very little paper work .

When Im pushing 63 and a half metric tons (140,000 pounds for you americans) down the road I am very focused on my job.

I made sure my boss was aware from day one that

(if I am not 110 % on task when Im driving that I'll park the truck and go home until I am )

If I get a large project in which I can hyperfocus then I'm highly productive, if I have to answer phones and the gang is goofing around, you can toss my productivity right out the window, I'm so distracted by noise!

I used to work in manufacturing - making electric motors. A physical job, I busted my butt and the day went by fast.

I left manufacturing for a higher paying admin job. I am bored! Unlike most admins, I have very little to do. I feel frustrated and like a useless person. I wonder why my position even exists. My boss and the engineers in my department will occasionally say "oh we have a big project for you". Sometimes they come through, many times it is completely forgotten. I have been taught to do Engineering Change Notices - I get one of those on monthly basis - that's it!

My boss barely talks to me - I am convinced he hates me. He is not the original boss that hired me, there was some re-org in 2001.

Here are some of the things I have done to keep myself occupied.

-I taught myself html and how to design web pages
-I read e-books
-I surf the net (duh)
-I pay games with my SNES emulator
-I visit this forum, and the greyhound forum

I am coming up on my fourth year at this job. I plan to make it to five so I get my pension - and then I bustin' this joint!

Diane: What's the greyhound forum? Care to share? I think I would like to tell my roommate about it.....

P.S. Maybe your boss doesn't "hate" you -- (does he even "know" you that well??) -- but instead doesn't have much to say to you for whatever reason???

OR maybe he thinks YOU don't like HIM because you were at the company first:) and you liked the boss you had before him??? (he thinks that, not necessarily true)

Joan:

The greyhound forum is where people who own retired racing greyhounds (I have 2) meet to talk about their dogs. Go to http://www.gpawisconsin.org/forum/phpBB2/

My boss? Well, he is kind of an odd guy. No one in the department likes him much. I don't think he even cares. He is paranoid. He spies on us and has been reported as saying that his subordinates are on a "need to know" basis. He eats up all of the corporate BS with a spoon - you know, like "encouraging" his employees to donate to the company's pet charity. He's a real piece of work.

To make the story even juicier is that it is my fault he is our boss. You see, my previous boss made some advances towards me and was moved to another department. At the time I was in complete denial about the situation until it blew up in my face. I just couldn't fathom a man twice my age- who has a beautiful wife, and attended my wedding- to be making moves on me. I convinced myself that it was all in my head. When I finally said something I was asked why I didn’t say something sooner. My boss’s actions were deemed "inappropriate, but not sexual harassment".

So, as you can see, my work situation has been less than ideal for quite some time.

I try to have a sense of humor about it though. :)

I am vulnerable to this trend as well... the trouble I have is that I do relatively good work on OTHER people's projects, but can't do consistent work on my OWN!

GRRRRR

I need to hire someone to be my boss so I can get my damn book done... :D :D :D

Diane

You and my roommate have a rather strange amount in common....She also has two retired greyhounds:)...

AND not her boss but a co-worker for quite awhile was sending some inappropriate e-mails to her saying "hi beautiful", "hi sexy", etc. Diane -- my roommate reported those e-mails....(she was smart to have saved them) and he was deemed to have been sexually harrassing her and he got fired....

anyway, I'm surprised your boss was deemed simply "inappropriate" for his advances toward you....but I guess every company is different....but anyway.......it's good you can keep your sense of humor about it......:)

Holy CRAP!

I lost my job in June - back then, I would've said I got paid to surf the net. In September, I started a job in an lab and I'm completely focused!!!

It just totally hit me. Wow - I'm completely shocked. I'm not sure if the job is just awesome or if it's the fact that I've started on Concerta or what - but I'm loving it! I'm coming home ABSOLUTELY exhausted because I've been working my booty off for once.

I'm even going in to work the day after Thanksgiving to get some work done on projects while my boss is out of town! *boggle*

That completely blows my mind.

I'm very much the same way. The first year I was (contracting) at my current job, my job was 75% tech support & 25% training & documentation. And I did so well, especially with training and documentation, that they hired me full-time (which in the present economy is a huge compliment - especially in the university system.)

The problem is now my job is 60-70% training and documentation projects. Which means that I can always find some tech support emergency to do instead of my project work with its accompanying deadlines. I rationalize to myself that it's all work, right? Except that when I miss deadlines and have sub-standard work, nobody cares that I was doing other work-related stuff instead.

So I've explained to my boss that I really need to hide in a corner two days a week to get the project work done, and she has been very accomodating (despite not quite understanding what the big deal is.. My biggest hurdle has been actually getting myself to the empty office where I've been hiding and doing work. Once I'm there, I work great.

There are many things you've done right. It fascinates me that there are so many more significant hurdles for the ADHD.

Find out how you get yourself into the room you have already cleared out, and write it on a posterboard. It's the part YOU need to see with your eyes to get into your head.

Take what you like and leave the rest.

Motivation is a big key for me.....and helped by meds somewhat...Today I had a very productive day getting things done in anticipation for returning to work tomorrow.....Took a walk, went to an OA meeting, took care of "mail" issue at my new apartment complex, returned a few phone calls, cleaned out my car a bit, straightened out my apartment a bit and spent time at Borders......

Too bad I didn't get to do my nails....:(

Not getting enough work done is a big problem for me. It was at university and it is at work. There are days when I hardly do more than read my mail. I get distracted by almost everything, but especially myself. I just think of something while I'm working seriously, then I just have to get up, walk, talk or browse the internet, write mail - anything. The other day I arrived at work and it was soooo quiet there! I sat down, did a meditation excercise I was tought by my coach and got to work. Nobody to distract me and I could keep myself from straying. After about two hours, I discovered why it was so quiet: all my collegues, boss included, were in a meeting, and I was supposed to be there too. Well, I just smiled, because for once I 'd finished a job properly. I apologized for not being there but I didn't really mean that ;-).

Work for myself, my own business. I am very capable of doing nothing in a day. I talk to a peer coach daily who has ADD and we talk about 10 min - 30 min per day. We give each other our highest 3 priorities each day and report how we did the day before. This has helped a lot! But still, I can do more, much more. Still looking to improve.

As a medication assistant and floor charge in a long term care facility I find the pace fast and alway's changing (this is were my ADD becomes the advantage NOT the handicap) for the first six hours. But, the last two hours of the shift is were I tend to get myself into trouble as that's when I have to complete the paperwork. But, like most ADD'ers I started analyzying my problem and trying to find away around it. What I have found to help is to walk around the office while filling out the paperwork on a clipboard. There are still day's were my mind shut's down and says NOPE UH UH NOT GONNA DO IT(focus); on these day's it's a battle; but, give me time I'll conquere these day's too.
