View Full Version : Synesthesia and Adult ADD-Relating sound to color
Mariela 08-21-04, 11:26 PM Any of you experience this?: Relating words or numbers to colors and sounds. For example, everytime I listen to music I inevitably "see" an image in my mind, usually black with one or two colors more. I can't appreciate sound itself. It is always related to an image for me. Here are the colors that I see for the numbers and the days of the week:
1-black the word "one" is white, though
2-orange the word "two" is black and white
3-green word "green", very dark green
4-red
5-black
6-blue
7-dark green
8-yellow
9-green
10-the 1 is black and the 0 is white
days of the week:
English:
Sunday-Black and dark brown
Monday-Black and dark brown
Tuesday-Blue violet
Wednesday-Dark brown
Thursday-Purple and gray
Friday-Blue, brown and black
Saturday-Brown and red
Spanish:
Domingo-green
Lunes-black
Martes-pink
Miercoles-brown
Jueves-Blue violet
Viernes-Blue
Sabado-red
These images don't occur in a very obvious manner and it is hard to retain them. I am aware of them to a certain degree only. I don't know if I am explaining this clearly. Anyway, please share your thoughts.
There's actually a name for what you're describing. It won't come to mind at the moment, but I'll try looking it up.

AHA. I found it. It's called "synesthesia."
Here's some information about it. There's plenty more you can find if you do a search.

Mariela 08-22-04, 10:51 AM Thank you for the interesting information. According to that, I don't have it because these people actually see an image outside the body. In my case it is in my mind and in an almost unconscious way.
I also relate pain, odors, etc. to color.
waywardclam 08-22-04, 11:06 AM This is VERY cool! I wish I sensed this way!
What happens about unusual numbers like negative three, or pi (3.14159...)?
What about January, February, March etc.?
I wonder if all people with synesthesia see the same colour for the same number, or if they're all different?
jaimegerise 08-22-04, 03:33 PM OMG I totally get what you are talking about, Mariela!
I've even done this like when I set up a planner, I'll put certain days in a certain color because I associate those days with that color!
I am very color oriented (I'd go advanced and always type my posts in color, but being ADD, I am kinda lazy :p)
Here's another example. On the birthday committee here, when I post a HB to someone, I post it in a color that the name somehow I associate with it, NOT just randomly picked.
Mariela 08-22-04, 03:33 PM Your post made laugh. I wonder the same. My brothers and sisters have usually the same associations but they differ sometimes.
I have an entire image for the calendar. But for each month word, it is like this:
January- very dark red, almost black
February-dark red
March-brown with some yellow
April-red
June-grey with a little blue
July- dark brown
august-blue
september- green
october-brown and white
november-green and brown???-not sure
december-green
The thing is that there is an image for the word, but there may be another image for the meaning of the word, etc.
I think that it's possible that the associations come from different reasons. For example, september is green because it has many e's, like in green, there are two e's. I don't know. Maybe the colors that I give to the numbers are the same they gave them in Sesame Street when I was little. I really don't know.
Mariela 08-22-04, 03:40 PM I forgot...
The negative numbers are the same colors but the negative symbol is like brown and white and gives a different appearance to the entire number.
In pi, each digit retains its color, but as a whole, is green. I guess, because it starts with 3.
