View Full Version : Adults with ADD and Spelling/Grammar
Eaglehawk 08-22-04, 01:17 PM I may be posting something thats already been posted but I couldn't find it.
Am I the only one that has trouble with spelling and grammer or is this an problem accross the board?
jaimegerise 08-22-04, 03:46 PM Ack I thought I had posted a response to this...I think it vanished...or user error:p
anyway...here's a couple of links to related threads...though not quite the same thing you question...

Even if not evident in my postings, I usually have no trouble with spelling or grammar. In fact, in school, I always made A+ in all of my English classes.
ChemicalMethod 08-22-04, 06:21 PM i am about average in spelling and grammer. English class bored the hell out of me so i used to skip and just not pay attention when i was in class, i managed to pass with a 69%, how i got that i have no idea.
irish guy 08-22-04, 09:33 PM I have a language LD so I have trouble with both.
goofyannie 08-23-04, 10:42 AM really good in spelling, that was one of my best subjects in school.Math different story, totally lost.
FtLaudWolf 08-23-04, 01:00 PM I'm obsessively correct with spelling and grammar.... well, I can be...
I am lousy at both. I am thankful for spell check. As you can tell do not use it here.
Dsherman 08-23-04, 03:44 PM I'm terrible, always have been. Words just bore me. The more I post the more my spelling and grammer will be evident to you that it's terrible.
Ftlaudwolf, I swear after reading some of your posts we need to meet! I'm REAL quirky (yeah, I could just leave it there as a statement but I won't ;) ) about spelling and grammer. I busted on my 11 yr old a few weeks ago in a store when she was talking and came out with "but we ain't got no...." after I caught my breath I parroted that back and asked her if that was just a small example of her father's tax dollars at work! Some guy further down the aisle was about to fall out laughing! My punctuation skills tend to be less than stellar but spelling and grammer are in fact big deals to me. Wonder why stuff piled knee deep on a floor just passes right by me? :p
FtLaudWolf 08-23-04, 05:04 PM It's gotten me into more trouble. I've finally gotten to the point where I don't automatically send people's email back with proofreading marks! Except for those people who love me enough not to take offense.
I'm very good at spelling and grammar. I used to hate both, but I got into the logic of them, and I also became a writer so I kinda had to get them. But I've always been a good speller.
However, the interesting thing is that I do have some spelling and grammar hangups, and they are due to ADD, but not in the way you might think. Looking back after being diagnosed as an adult, I can think of several times where I just missed a certain spelling or grammar issues in school, and to this day I have trouble with them. Now I know why I missed them. I figured out many spelling, grammar, and math techniques or rules on my own after zoning out in school, and I do them a little differently than how most people get taught it school. But they work for me. I was lucky enough to be smart enough to figure them out on my own.
Mariela 08-23-04, 11:50 PM I'm very good at spelling and grammar. English is not my first language and sometimes I mess up, but I usually spell correctly.
By the way, it's grammAr, not grammEr....hehehe
clawless 08-24-04, 05:52 AM I didn't vote, as i'm not the one with adhd, but i am so bad at spelling and grammar and as for remembering to use punctuation what can i say but sorry its just not there in my head no matter how hard i try. :o
I wasnt sure which one to vote for
I dont have any problems
or
I do have problems
Personally "I dont have any problems as everything that I write looks correct and makes sence to me"
Its other people reading it who have the problem deciphering what I am trying to say
So
I think "I dont Have any Problems"
Its Everybody else that cant read properly
Big Grin :D
Add1234 08-24-04, 08:07 PM I really try hard to be good at grammar yet I often fail. It's mainly going in depth into grammar that confuses the crap out of me.

I thought about having that as an option, but I forgot to do it when it came down to it. LOL
I have problems with finding proper words for things. I always have to stop in mid-sentence and figure out what the right word is going to be next. I really can't stand that.
But for spelling, my problem is different. I cannot spell out words to people unless I write them first. I won a spelling bee in second grade and I could have gone district if they would have given me a pencil and a pad of paper. But I missed an easy word for a second grader. Canoe. After I misspelled it I wrote the word down and got it right. But it was too late.....that was one of the events that cut my self-esteem pretty bad.
At that age, not knowing I had ADHD, and after piles of paperwork on testing me for my "learning problem", I was devastated. I still have to write words out before I spell a word for someone when they ask.
codeman38 08-29-04, 11:13 PM I can't be the only one who noticed that "grammar" was misspelled in the choices, right? :p
Yeah... for some reason spelling and grammar come easily to me. I wish I could be the same way with spatial skills and visual observation in general!
Eaglehawk 08-30-04, 10:22 AM see what I mean...oye..
Crash-Dr 08-31-04, 02:18 PM It's gotten me into more trouble. I've finally gotten to the point where I don't automatically send people's email back with proofreading marks! Except for those people who love me enough not to take offense.
FtLaudWolf (and Alexa); I too am pretty obsessive when it comes to spelling and grammar, so much so that my wife has a fit whenever I correct her (I try not to do that anymore ;)), and some of my friends jokingly call me "Grammaton" whenever I pipe up with a correction. I'm now learning to exercise more self control and become more socially acceptable :D
(See! I didn't say anything about the poll question....aw nuts!)

i was a good speller until i hit my 30's, for some odd reason. however i play plenty of games with grammer so some think im an uneducated dunce.
just my way of having a bit of fun.
hypergeek 09-20-04, 12:11 AM i have touble with both those things. also ican't type good which makes it worse. as far as grammer goes, i usualy just say what has to get said before i stop to think it throgh anyway.
Although I love to write I have no knowledge of the parts of speech and my spelling skills are on the same level as a squirrels might be.
I asked Pierrette the other day to help me figure out how to use "who" and "whom" correctly. I was treated to a discussion on prepositions and pronouns which apparently need work too.
Much remains to fill the void that is my understanding of grammer. Spelling I got over as soon as I had the right software..heh
I'd use grammer functions but it cramps my style and I don't learn anything from it. At least the spelling has started to seep into my life permanently. I wish they'd just have given me the correct words in school.. I'd be that much further ahead by now!
I've been picking away at learning French and it's a beach to not have any understanding of the parts of speech when trying on a new language. I've got the accent down pat but that just seems to get me in too deeply with any francophone I engage.. lol

codeman38 10-13-04, 01:21 AM I asked Pierrette the other day to help me figure out how to use "who" and "whom" correctly. I was treated to a discussion on prepositions and pronouns which apparently need work too.
Oh, I have a great mnemonic for that.
If you could substitute "he" in the place of the word in question, use "who". If you can substitute "him", use "whom".
So, for instance:
"Is this the boy ___ had ADD?" He had ADD, so you'd use "who".
"___ should I give this check to?" This one's a bit trickier, because you have to re-arrange the sentence. Should I give this check to him? So it's "whom".
Hope this helps... it's a lot easier than trying to figure out subjects, objects and all that stuff, in my opinion.
Deeperblue 10-13-04, 09:24 AM My fear is not knowing that I know....but somtimes, I find, that I do know, yet I am so insecure about my knowledge and so I just think that I just don't know, ya know? So.......I just purchased, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Grammar and Style" This is my next project (after phycis, of course-- )
IndyCelt 10-13-04, 10:30 AM However, the interesting thing is that I do have some spelling and grammar hangups, and they are due to ADD, but not in the way you might think. Oh My! I have been diagnosed for a year and I never connected what I missed in school with ADD. D'oh! Looking back, I know I had it as a child - my 9 year old reminds me so much of myself that it scares me sometimes. However, until right now I never thought about how much I must have missed while daydreaming in class. I must have really been "gone" when they were doing who, whom, lay, lie, etc. There are some holes in my math skills too.
It is a good day when you learn something new about yourself!
I am hopeless at spelling and grammer. The spelling has come a long way with the advent of spell check. Instead of trying to cram the correct words into me like my school experience, spell check just gives me the spelling without the negativity and that has lead to learning a lot more about spelling than school ever provided me with.
I recently wrote to my literate Mum for advise on grammer which remains troublesome for me. She agreed to help and included in her first reply were these tips. I hope someone else finds them useful.
===============
Now, about pronouns...
It's hard to know where to start, as you may have trouble knowing the language of grammar. You didn't have the advantage of having Mrs Gaudet in grade six, David had.
I, you,he/she,we you, they are subject pronouns which require a verb to follow.i.e. they must do something. Me,you,him/her,us you, them, are object pronouns which usually come after the verb and receive the action. You can test this theory by putting a preposition in front of them, i.e. to them, from me, with us, etc.
Who and whom work the same way. Who is the subject and whom is the object. To Whom, by whom, from whom, etc. Who can always be tested by using a noun as a test ex. Who came, John came, who said, Ian said, etc.
Does that help? Oh, I forgot. As in all English rules there are exceptions. The verb "to be, I am, you are, he is. etc. requires the subjective case after. For instance, It is I, although this use may label you as an old school teacher as it is seldom adhered to in these days of sloppy grammar. Even the teachers get down and dirty with the verbs lay and lie. Lay is a verb which always requires an object such as eggs. Get it? If you want to rest your bones, you must lie down and forget about the eggs!!
Wheezie 10-13-04, 09:57 PM i guess i haven't outgrown my inability to follow a grammar lesson. :(
it was nice of your mom to help you out. it's just that the second after i read that, it is gone again. some things just don't stick....
it's the same with some words. i tend to spell the same words wrong over and over. some words i catch as "looking wrong", but, there are some words that look wrong no matter how i spell them.
my daughter does the same thing. she actually is the one who put it into words for me. she was practicing for a spelling test and caught an error because it didn't look right. i knew just what she was talking about. but, maybe this is how everyone spells? i don't know. seems that some people have the letters memorized, i have the way a word looks memorized.
but, i am a visual learner, so, this probably shouldn't be a big surprise.
(probably is one of the words i always have trouble with - it doesn't look right even when it's spelled correctly  ).
wheezie it's the same for me. I'll have to have many repetitions in practical applications to learn anything from that short lesson. Actually I think I retained the lay lie one because of the egg reference.
In one ear, out the other...
KMiller 10-14-04, 12:32 AM I just think it is fun to point out that it's spelled "grammar." :)
I'm good at grammar, and I'm ok at spelling...not writing though. I leave out letters a lot when I write...I know how the words are spelled, but I don't do it right. Good game Dysgraphia! The spelling part I have problems with in English only because our spelling system is goofy and there is no set pattern for how some things are spelled...mostly I get beaten up by doubling consonants in words with "ing" at the end, and in "i before e" type things...but oh well.
Wheezie 10-14-04, 01:01 AM hmmm, i'm *way* too competetive. i read this as a challenge  and thought, "if he can figure out lie/lay, i can too darnit!"
i re-read your mom's lesson - it still didn't take. i googled "grammar lie lay" and tried several sites. i don't think i've got it. a sure sign it doesn't make sense to me is that i start to argue with the explanation, but, at least i'm not ticking off my english teacher.... :D
:evil grin: how *sure* are you that you've learned the lie/lay lesson? care to test yourself ???
http://webster.commnet.edu/cgi-shl/quiz.pl/lie_lay_quiz.htm?cgi_quiz_form=1 and http://a4esl.org/q/h/vm/lie-lay.html (i did better than i thought i would, admitedly, some were lucky guesses, and i still don't know what an object is.... )
goodnight, i need to go lay down. i should have lain down hours ago.
hopeless, w.
wheezie it's the same for me. I'll have to have many repetitions in practical applications to learn anything from that short lesson. Actually I think I retained the lay lie one because of the egg reference.
In one ear, out the other...
KMiller 10-14-04, 01:09 AM I got a flawless victory on the lie-lay tests...but it's because of German I think, liegen.
I am obsessive about spelling and to a lesser extent, grammar.
KMiller 10-14-04, 10:33 AM I am obsessive about spelling and to a lesser extent, grammar.
Yay for us linguist types! I just wish English spelling made more sense. The language does not lend itself easily to patterns.
I'm pretty good at spelling & grammar because I'm very language oriented. In school my eyes glazed over when discussing objects, prepositions, etc. but I learned intuitively. The same way I test high in math concepts but eyes glaze over about memorizing formulas or multiplication tables.
Here's something funny though: When someone asks me to spell a word for them I have a tough time speaking spelling. I have to grab a pen & write it in order to recall the correct spelling. What is that, some lack of fluidity in my brain or what?
pembroke 11-08-04, 08:38 AM My spelling and grammar (in English) are great. Although English is my second language, I now have more trouble in my native Hungarian when it comes to spelling and grammar and just the whole language in general....
Terrible with both. I wAs in speical handwriting classes when i was little cause it was so bad. If I didn't have a computer now I dont know what i would have done in HS or college. My spelling has gotten better over the years, but still not great. I work in the restraunt industry, I still can't spell restraunt correctly! What does tht say??
MovingOn 12-08-04, 02:25 PM I'm ANAL about spelling though I do occasionally goof. Grammar... I don't know.
If a CAD operator refuses to correct spelling errors on a drawing that I catch I do truly believe that he must be FIRED immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO excuses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So maybe I'm having a bad day...................but I'd still fire all ****y CAD operators!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never found my self studying for spelling or grammer quizes in high school however carried the highest average in the class. Its totally relative to the domain in which the deficit in your attention span comes from.
@paulbf
Theres a theory that problems with spelling come from the way your mind processes written language. Apparently you either have an idea of how things should song, then write them down and look wether they are ok like that, or you first picture the words in your head and then copy+paste from there.
I am the auditory type that just writes stuff and then has to get a feeling wether it looks right or not. I have to look up the same words, even in my native language, german, over and over again until they stick.
abre los ojos 12-16-04, 01:53 AM I totally sucked at spelling and grammar in elementary school, before I could grasp the abstract and structural form behind language. At that point I developed more of a passion for both reading and writing. Hmmm, that seems like a repeat scenario of all my endeavors. I've had to use abstraction to compensate for my lack of linear learning abilty.
chainsmoker 01-03-05, 06:54 AM That's what is missing here - Spellcheck. It would be a great to check our posts before replying.[PHP]
TonyTheTiger 01-10-05, 06:25 AM When I write I tend to have massive problems remembering which tense I'm writing in. Anyone else? ;@)
Lovebug 01-29-05, 08:49 PM I also have tense problems! It's very fustrating. My spelling is horrible--I'm completely dependent on spell check. My biggest problem is switching s's and c's and forgeting last letters like e's and s's. I've always been a bad speller, but ironically I test very well in reading comp. and other verbal skills. Lazy (I should say impacient) or bad wiring???
Ann
KingRocky 02-01-05, 09:33 PM I am obsessively picky about correct spelling, punctuation and grammar usage.
I'm sure that I've offended MANY people over the years by correcting their writing without their asking. :)
And, of course, with ADD, I tend to blurt out my opinion, or my correction, without thinking.
Anybody watch that show, "Monk," on the USA Network? Then you know what I'm talking about. If I see incorrect grammar. . . MUST. . . FIX. . . IT. . . NOW!!
And if you've never seen it, I highly recommend it. I think it's one of the BEST shows on television.
rasberryrum29 02-02-05, 06:28 PM Oh yeah. i can't spell worth a damn either. i also have trouble writing sentences, and well, i guess i don have trouble with both spelling and grammer.
free2bme 02-02-05, 07:48 PM www.iespell.com (http://www.iespell.com/)
This is a free spell-check you load into IE, and can forever thereafter spell your way correctly all around the WWW. Yes, incorrect spelling and/or grammar drives me completely batty. Nothing is worse than realizing I've sent something with an error in it....2 seconds AFTER I hit the send button. Man, that gets my hyper-focused nutty self going into overdrive!!!
Happy Spelling!!!!!!
auntchris 02-02-05, 11:05 PM I mainly have problems in grammar. I have always pretty good at spelling. Reading and comprehension are pretty bad too come to think of it. auntchris
capt kylos 02-03-05, 10:27 AM I was diagnosted with a learning disability long before I was diagnosted with ADD. Many that have handwriting, spelling and gramar problems have dysgraphia, the LD is similar to dyslexia but involves the writing part of the brain but does not affect one's reading comprehension. Capt Kylos
auntchris 02-05-05, 09:41 PM Oh I have terrible comprehension. The last time I was tested it was a 10th graders read level. yikes...
HighFunctioning 02-10-05, 09:07 AM I generally do not have a problem with grammar and spelling (as is probably indicated by my posts). I do look up words often when I am not sure if my spelling is correct. In the past, have made some very silly spelling mistakes (trying to spell phonetically). Now, I simply visualize each word, being far more accurate.
For anyone who is interested, I have the following entry in my WindowMaker root menu to launch mozilla to search (command type is "Run Command"):
mozilla http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=%a(Spelling,Enter a word to spell:)
(Had to put that in CODE tags as VB's parser picked up the colon and right paren and turned it into an emoticon!)
which displays a dialog that prompts for a word to check. Of course, some are probably thinking that I should refer to /usr/share/dict/words, but www.dictionary.com is helpful in finding the word you intended to spell.
ms_sunshine 02-10-05, 03:05 PM I'm an English teacher now, so this was never a huge problem area for me. My weakness has always been in math. It tends to cause my brain to flatline. English, Literature, Poetry, and things like this have always felt like second nature to me, whereas the other stuff was completely foreign. I would try very hard to understand concepts, but to no avail. My senior year of college, I was diagnosed with dyscalculia, so now it makes more sense. :) They have grammar and spell check buttons on computers, but for math, most of us are on our own.
they have formulas in spreadsheets :p
Lacysmom 03-14-05, 10:31 AM YIKES! I do have a problem with grammer. I am "ok" with spelling. As I am getting older, its getting harder.
Whizper 03-15-05, 03:29 AM "I was diagnosted with a learning disability long before I was diagnosted with ADD. I had never heard of dysgraphia before, but I might have a mild form of it.
I have exceptionally good grammar and spelling ( especially if you consider that I am a second language English speaker ) but when I WRITE something I often drop a letter, switch them around, etc. unless I am attentive to such mistakes (which I have become). Strangely though, I believe I learned English grammar through Echolalia (Google it!) - I memorised fixed phrases without ever really understanding the grammatical basis for the structure of the sentence. Also, I am a bibliophile, and I think English books saved my language ability. I easily read a 300 page book a day...and up to 3 books depending on the number of pages and how much time I have. Make that about a max of 900 pages a day if I only get up to eat. Am I addicted?
I don't think I could explain how to use past tense, but when you analyse my spoken/typewritten English, I apparently use it correctly.
BTW....on the subject...google something called Hyperlexia...it can be described as the direct opposite of dyslexia. Apparently Asperger Syndrome, hyperlexia and ADD sometimes group together...

Crucifer 03-15-05, 11:18 AM I do not have trouble with either grammar or spelling, in fact I am compulsive about both being correct. If I send out an email or other communication, and I realize later that it contains a misspelling or grammatical mistake, I am mortified. It also drives me nuts when others make spelling or grammar mistakes. My wife is always saying stuff like "should have went," "her and Bob," "you did good," etc. Her folks say things like "we don't have no apples," and similar awful stuff. I catch my 6-year-old speaking like that and I have to correct her. There's no way she is going to grow up speaking like she dropped out of school. I also can't stand to see bumper stickers or advertising with mistakes on them.
Jeeminy, I hope there aren't any mistakes in the above papragraph.
