Do I eat a meal before or after taking Adderall. I'm not going to eat or drink anything acidic either. I took Adderall this morning and didn't eat anything for breakfast or lunch and I was very shaky and weak.

Before, with, or shortly after. Once it kicks in, it can rapidly diminish your appetite. Some protein and fats will last longer in your system than carbs, lessening the chance you'll feel shaky later (from low blood sugar). Try to snack through the day, too, even if you aren't hungry enough for lunch.

You should eat a meal at least 3 times a day, so that your body doesn't feel weak/hungry/exhausted.

Your body needs food to have fuel for the day. I don't think it matters when you take your Adderall.

It doesn't really matter if you ate before or after, but some people prefer to eat before, simply because Adderall tends to suppress appetite. I'm sure there are people who will tell you it's better to take Adderall on an empty stomach, but I've found absolutely no difference in how well my medication works in terms of what I have or haven't eaten on a particular day. Whatever you do, make sure you eat normally!

It's different for everyone. I eat breakfast 30 minutes after I take it. Whether I'm hungry or not. If I eat before I take my first dose, it takes about an hour to kick in, otherwise, it's kicked in within 20 minutes. If I don't eat breakfast after I take it, I do get shaky by 12. Not bad, but it's enough to bother me. It doesn't happen if I eat regular meals.

I eat breakfast before I take it, otherwise I have trouble finishing my meal. It really depends on how Adderall affects your appetite.

I usually take it first thing with a cup of coffee and eat about an hour later. I don't know if it works better but it works this way for me

To Darkpk55: It's suggested that you avoid caffeine or any other stimulants while taking amphetamine (Adderall). Adding caffeine to amphetamine may make you shaky and anxious because it tends to intensify the effects and duration of amphetamine. Also, some have reported that eating on an empty stomach increases the effects which may be the reason you're shaky. It's better to eat and then take the medication so at least you have some fuel in your stomach, because it may decrease your appetite later on.

I'll put things simply to avoid reiterating what others may have said:

Adderall absorption is influenced by the contents of your stomach.

From personal experience, I always "feel" my doses more if I take it on an empty stomach. I usually wait about 15-20 minutes (sometimes even more) before eating breakfast to take my dose. If I must eat first, I try to wait at least an hour before taking the Adderall. If I take it with food, I feel a diminished effect throughout the day.

Taking Adderall with coffee might inhibit absorption because coffee is acidic -- an acidic pH in your GI tract will lower absorption. The converse is true if contents are alkaline.

I could also make your head spin by saying that a meal that is fatty may help absorption of Adderall because the amphetamine molecule is lipophilic, but I can't substantiate nor do I really want to detail how this would be without going into complex chemistry.

Drinking coffee while under the influence of Adderall may cause "synergistic effects" of hyperstimulation: increased anxiety, irritability, jitteriness, instability, twitching, further increased heart rate and blood pressure (as Adderall/caffeine do this already), and possible euphoria (from either the Adderall or caffeine).

Most of these effects I listed for synergy have been experienced first hand by me, and some friends I know who also take Adderall -- so it's anecdotal -- but I would imagine it is also documented if you were to search for it.

Man I must've missed the memo on the caffeine and adderall euphoria. I have never had that. Now I'm bummed.

Think of it like a big caffeine buzz and less like an Adderall buzzy feeling. I usually feel like I just had a huge cup of Starbucks quadruple espresso on Adderall even if the actual coffee was a 8oz cup of instant brew stuff. Might also be my own brain chemistry- - I've been a caffeine fiend (and have a high tolerance) since I was 8 years old.

Definitely eat before. If I take my dose and not eat within 10 minutes of it, I can forget about eating my breakfast or anything for that matter for the next 3 hours at least.

This was a huge problem when I first started taking adderall. I must have lost over 40 pounds within the first 3 months, and I was not considered overweight by any standard before that.

Now I have learnt to at least try to eat before my dose, or if I am running late in the morning, at least drink a protein shake (ironically, due to dehydration from adderall I can drink these by the gallons, and some of them have like 2x calories as a meal at McDonalds).

=======================================

Yes, stomach contents do interfere with absorption or even the breakdown of the pill itself. A yogurt or a banana before a dose, seems to increase the rate of absorption (I believe this has to do with lowering the acidity levels of your stomach) but on the other hand, the onset of effects does seem to be much rougher.

Adderall doesn't seem to diminish my appetite at all.. if anything it makes me more hungry.. If I don't eat while on this stuff it just makes me feel crappy..
