 Lately I am going through ciggies almost 1 1/2 packs a day...I dunno if it is my nerves or what..but I either I am watching TV, Playing Card with mom, on the computer...I am not realizing how much I am smoking until Oh Me Oh My.....I have a few smokes left that I opened maybe 5 hours before...

I can understand if I was on dexadrine right now(it always makes me want a cig more than usual) But I am out and only meds I am taking is Lamictal. Is the Meds causing this or is the ADD or just my nerves...now usually I would think nothing of it...but when I was not on meds before....I would smoke way way less..:o....arg!

i wish i could help you, but unfortunately i am allergic to cigarette smoke. i couldnt smoke if i tried and believe me i have tried and tried some more and it just doesnt work. lol. maybe you could try alternating with gum or something. it doesnt sound like you are craving it. it sounds like you are just filling time or something??

A lot of people smoke as well because it gives them a way to fidget. Ever thought of getting a fidget ring?

I, too, smoke like a fiend. I have also noticed that since I've started meds that I smoke less, when I remember to take them. My dr. says I've been using cigs and coffee to self-medicate which makes perfect sense to me. I hope, if I can get the med situation settled to a routine that I might be able to quit.

I also can't sit still, always have to be doing something, and the cigs fill that need. In addition, to swinging my feet and legs, chewing my cuticles, and all those other NASTY habits. :o

Hey Draga,
Just posted this on another site.....it's the same observation that KimAlimah makes, I think. It's in answer to a lady that has posted requesting some help for her ADDer husband (unmedicated) and his attempts to kick his nicotine addiction.

Hi,
I have had a really big problem with cigarettes.
I started during my first degree in 1987 and from then, even though I haven't smoked for the whole time, I have been on cigarettes or nicotine patches for all bar 4 months of the last 17 years.
For instance - I'm using a max delivery patch (>20mg) and have had 4 pieces of 4mg chewing gum too today. Today was a bit more stressful than most, mind you -- I had my motorcycle test.
I only gave up smoking and patches whilst I was on Dexedrine - an ADD medication ie I took Dex and within a week of starting, I was free from cigs and patches!
I was not expecting this - it came as a very welcome side effect of the medication.
The argument that I believe, is that nicotine is an indirect pro-dopaminergic molecule, and so its effects can be superceded or replaced by a stimulant (Dex), which exerts stronger effects on the dopaminergic pathway, and that then renders the nicotine redundant (for this purpose, anyway).
However, I really am not suggesting that anyone tries Dex or ritalin, as a smoking cessation tool. For me it was a valid medication for ADD, which just happened to separate me from my horrendous need for nicotine.
I don't know if my observations are universal though -- haven't come across too many similar posts on any ADD forum.
It is, however, pretty much acepted that ADDers are more prone to addictions, and that stimulant medication can save us from this fate.
But .. am hoping this information helps.

PS-My wife (now) smoked with me, since we were 21 - and every time we tried to give up - she succeeded -- and I failed....always. For many years before I'd even heard of ADD, I've wondered why we were so different in our sensitivities to nicotine......I'm sure that ADD is the answer.
If it's of any use to you -- I can describe what happens to me as I try to wean myself off nicotine. As I drop the size of the patch - I start to feel intense anxiety.
Of course, just moving up to a higher strength patch, or using nicotine gum -- completely removes my anxiety.....replacing it with a feeling of relaxation.
I even feel the fizzing of nicotine from the patch through my skin, or the fizzing of nicotine from the chewing gum into my gums -- and then relaxation, only seconds later.
And, just to come back to the stimulants -- the feeling I had when last taking a Dexedrine Pill -- was of complete relaxation -- similar to the sensation of relaxation (though much more intense) that I described in the paragraph above.
Finally...there are lots of people that claim that Wellbutrin<ZYBAN>, is an excellent ADD treatment + antidepressant + smoking cessation treatment.
Also, Wellbutrin and Dex can be taken together -- and work well together apparently....and so maybe either just one of these 2 meds, or the combination of these 2 treatments might help your husband to kick his habit once and for all.
..I'm in the process of trying to be prescribed this combination.

Yaeah...i had to quit smoking when I was Pregnant at a time...but I was under immense anxiety...I was worried either way If I quit smoking I get stressed and If I smoke to calm nerves I hurt the child anyway...:( Of course non of that made a difference when I lost the child anyway.*sniff*

Hey there im the same way with smoking. I sit in front of my computer and will smoke a pack. When i stopped smoking by the computer i didnt smoke as much. I think its cuz we are in a routine of doing it just like in the car i like to smoke. If u start smoking outside and not at the comp you will smoke less. I have been obsessive with smoking and eating the past yr though i have that type of personality where i eat food to feel comfort and smoke. I know wellbutrin helps the cravings go away and curbs your appetite. I have tried it and it helps. Im going back on it and starting lamictal for my crazy moods. Its good to mix it up and not smoke at the computer everyday cuz its so easy to just smoke and smoke and not realize it when your online!

1-2 packs a day for me. More if I am hyperfocused, less if I am busy.

My mother smoked 4 packs a day for many years.

I have wondered if ADDers smoke more than NT's. I would think thta because of the way nicotine affects seretonin that it would have a calming effect... at least it does for me..
