Dear fellow-gadget-addicts,

I've spent all day on this and have still not found the right product.

I am looking for a PDA (must have color) that allows me to verbally record EVERYTHING. I don't want to have to use with the weird little pen!

I had a Palm for a while but it was so much quicker to write things down that I never used it. Last month I bought an olympus digital voice recorder and I really love it. It lets you record tons of separate messages per day. When the alarm goes off, it plays your recording! Its terrific but I wanted something a little more sophisticated if possible. A PDA sounds like it might do the trick but I didn't know which one. I don't need the phone feature either. Hopefully it will be under $300??
Any recommendations would be great.

many thanks!

Moxee

I'm trying to decide between the Sharp Zaurus 5600 and the Garmin iQue. The Zaurus runs Linux, which is a plus to me, while the Garmin has a builtin GPS receiver. Both have voice recorders and MP3 players. The Garmin can even give you voice directions when you use its GPS software.

Decisions, decisions...

well, next week i have an appointment with an occupational therapist, and i'm bringing a list of "gadgets" i think i'd find helpful...

is there a pda (with) which (i) could

record meetings/lectures (at least 120 minutes)

take pictures of handdrawn directions ('cause if someone tries to get me to remember directions they told me, i'm lost after the "well, first you take the first on your right, then...";-) and people ('cause i'm terrible at remembering people's faces and names)

writing down to-do lists

prevent me from "double-booking" myself (i've even been known to "triple-book" myself...;-)

remind me to take my medication

Several of them can. The Sony Clie NX70V is one. It actually has a capacity of 535 minutes of voice recordings (almost 9 hours). The Zaurus SL5600 can do it, too, but it's a bit more expensive than the Sony.

thanx, exeter!
unfortunately it seems as though neither of those pdas is available over here in sweden...
:(

the search goes on...

i'll probably end up with a zire 72 or a tungsten 3...

you could look for a Mitac Mio 339 pocket PC... it even has a built in cam (perfect for remembering faces :) )

Finding a PDA allowing extensive recording on it's own won't be an easy task. Most PDAs come standard with 64mb of storage or less. Fortunately, most have expansion slots that will allow using Secure Digital (or similar) memory cards up to 512mb (which is plenty of room for all the voice recording you could ever do.)

Personally, I have an HP iPaq h4150. I've done A LOT of research on PDAs and have decided the h4150 to be one of the best available (at least in the Pocket PC market). I chose Pocket PC (Windows CE based) because I need it to synchronize with my Outlook inbox, contacts, etc. Plus I needed a built in WiFi card for internet on the go. Another good PPC model is Dell's new Axims (X30 and X50). Their older ones (X3 and X5) were much too bulky.

Try _eBay_ for Olympus or other Voice Recorders.

Recently, I have seen the Olympus thingy you mention for under $80. Even some under $30, depending on the model. (Dunno how the bidding finally ended!!)

I got a SONY Voice Recorder a few weeks ago for $14US. (MSRP=$70).

I have seen PDAs sell for $120. Nice ones, too.

Best of luck,

Emma
