View Full Version : Going to see my family doctor tomorrow about possible Adult ADD Essy 09-08-04, 10:47 AM to get a diagnosis on this. Any suggestions on how I should approach this, or what questions to ask? I'm a little nervous about it for some reason. Wheezie 09-08-04, 10:52 PM welcome essy, i've read that a lot of people bring in one of the on-line forms that they've filled out. it helps to have notes if you're the type who forgets important things you wanted to say *during* the appointment. i think that your approach with your doctor would depend on the type of relationship that you have established. if you communicate fairly well, you could start out asking him/her if they are treating any adults with ADD. let him/her know why you think you have it, and, why you think it is *not* one of the *many* conditions with overlapping ADD symptoms. and end with a "what are my treatment options?" type question. my family doc treats my ADD. but, i was previously diagnosed and went to her for a second opinion. also, this was my first visit ever to her, so, she had a lot of "gt-to-know-you type questions for me. anyway, the questions i had for her wouldn't work in your situation. good luck tomorrow! wheezie Piupau 09-09-04, 04:50 PM You could bring someone close to you to the appointment. Someone who knows you, like a boyfriend, sister, best friend or something. It's good if you get a "blackout" and your brain won't work anymore. I was very happy that I had my husband and a very good friend with me at the first appointment. Tara 09-09-04, 06:05 PM How did things go? Essy 09-09-04, 09:13 PM He does think I have it (the inattentive kind), but says in order to be certain I would need to have an extensive test done by a psychiatrist who then would be able to treat me. However, since I'm not interested in medication at this point he suggested that I speak to a therapist to get some help in dealing with this. Wheezie 09-09-04, 11:18 PM i just wanted to make sure you saw this link. http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=94652#post94652 it had some good, basic information on cognitive therapy. the side bar "finding a therapist" might also prove helpful if your doctor didn't have a recommendation. good luck and thanks for the update. wheezie |
