Hello everyone, I've been reading these forums for a few days now and finally decided to ask for some advice... I've known pretty much all my life that I had some form of ADD, but always just put it off as "this is how I am". Now that my doctor prescribed me 15mg spanules of Dexedrine, I'm not too sure if being focused through the drug is worth the down I get from it in the evening. I'm normally an on the go type of guy after work, I like being around other people and such, the past week I've wanted nothing more then to just stay home as I feel very anti-social when I come off the Dexedrine.

The first day was great but the evening, what a mess! To let you all know I have used many different types of drugs for recreational purposes over the years, so I'm very intune (maybe too much so) with what the drug does to my body and mind. With all the ups and downs I get from this drug, I could see the possiblity of "abuse". I put abuse in quotes as the only reason I would abuse Dexidrene is because it doesn't last very long (even with the time release and all) and when it wears off I only want more because I feel like crap.

So today I decided to try something different, I've popped open one cap, spilled out half of it into my mouth, chewed then swallowed. My thought on this is that I'll take 7.5mg of what should now be instant release, in the morning and then another in the afternoon after lunch. I'm hoping that the down from this isn't as severe as taking 15mg in the morning (by 3pm or so I can feel it wearing off)

So I'm not too sure whether to just say "screw it" and stick to my old adhd self or is there a way to take this stuff in such a manor that I feel normal (and good) the whole day till I go to sleep. BTW I haven't had much problems falling asleep as I've used lorazepam a couple times when I felt my brain was still going.

Thanks Guys and Gals!!

It's good that you're doing something for your ADHD, taking meds and all.

I wouldn't take the meds in an "alternative" manner, though. If you want instant release Dexedrine, see if your doctor can write you a prescription for the real deal. It comes in as small as 5 mg tablets. Or, you and your doc might decide that there's another med out there that might not give you the big down in the evening.

I hope you and your doctor are able to figure this one out for you. :)

Spansules are time release - the little beads inside are coated differently so that half dissolve and release the drug right away and the other half take around 4 hours for the coating to wear away and release the second dose. Opening gel capsules isn't harmfull, I wouldn't think - the gelatine dissolves very quickly once they hit your stomach so the result is very similar, but not very precise.
I prefer the regular release version myself - the flexability they give outweighs the benefit of not having to remember to take the second dose, for me at least. I take dex three times a day to get full coverage without too much of a down in the evening.
FYI - 5mg tablets are all that's available in brand name Dexedrine. I think that 10mg may be available in generic - depending on where you live and which pharmacy you go to.
