I know my mom is ADD. She is no where near as bad as me cause she can speak to people without stuttoring or blanking out and has no problem understanding what she reads, but some traits of her ADD still show like speaking at the wrong time and interrupting...etc..Kinda mild.
She told me Her mom, My Grandma(well duh:rolleyes: )..had manic depression, so severe to the point that she never seamed happy. I may be manic depressive but I can't say I am always misreable..as long as I get a chuckle out of someone I know I am doing ok.
Mom says I have my creative writing talent thanks to dad..but what if that isn't all...Something tells me that Dad may have too cause he had a bad temper and mood swings and OMG Did he ever say the worst things and do the most embarrasing things without a second thought,.I can't shake the feeling there was something about himself he saw in me and maybe that why he kept me at a distance. Something maybe he couldn't deal with, maybe. So maybe he was a little bit of ADD & Bipolar.
Here is a Nice Lil Equation
1 grandmother's severe bipolar
1 mother's mild ADD
+1 father's possible mild ADD & Bipolar
Me Both Severe ADHD & Bipolar
All that genetics seemed to have skipped my sister and fell right on my lap....
So....Could it be that my ADHD & Bipolar symptoms are worse because I have the genetic combination of Both ADHD & Bipolar in two generations....If it does, then if I have children someday and it is passed down..Will they be worse than me?
Mind Boggling..aint it?
Hi,
This is a tough question because of the state of research into the genetics of bipolar and add.
If, as believed ADD, and Bipolar are complex genetic multifactorial traits - then there are several genes which may be disease predisposing, which together combine to lead to disease in any individual.
So, I guess one could imagine that there are eg 10 genes (mutant) in total, which have ADD predisposing values of 1.....such that if the count goes over eg 4, then ADD is seen, and if over eg 6, then severe ADD is seen etc.......
So.....when it comes to looking at the next generation, whether or not they are likely to be more severely affected...or not.... depends on the number of disease predisposing genes that are inherited from mother and father.
If one imagines that one child gets 1 disease gene from mother and 1 from father -- then because below the threshold of 4...ADD will not be seen........however if 4 are passed from mother and 4 from father ....then very severe ADD will be seen in the child.
This answer isn't very satisfying -- but certainly with time, and as these genes are identified, actual risks will be calculable given the knowledge of the mutant gene presence in mother and father.
Forgive me for not going into the science gobbledygook of dominance, recessive, epistasis, penetrance, additive and multiplicative effects, gene-environment interactions .... they don't add much to the answer.
Overall though, the point you make is absolutely right.....if mother and father are both severe ADD+Bipolar....the chances of kiddy being severe ADD+Bipolar (worse than the parents potentially) is so much higher than the chances of kiddy being ADD+Bipolar, if both parents are unaffected by either.

Well there Miss Melly
All this hoky poky about genes and such is not within the realm of my discussion
but I will comment on the knowlege that you have learned and gained in the time you have been exploring your ADD and such will be passed down to your children in such a way that it will be normal for them to be what ever way they are.
You see Dear Melly, your children will begin to learn about it from the day they are born and not have to wait till there 30 years old to start trying to find the answers all on there own.
Maybee they will be very very good poets , even better than yourself, who really don't give a tinkers Da** about what the rest of society thinks as they will have learned from day one that its, "OK", "Just To Be Who You Are , Who ever and what ever that may be.
In ways I envy the next generation of ADD Kids who are raised by ADD ADDults who took the time to learn about ADD
Hugs SB
Then I literally have to thank Mom and Dad...I still would not trade an ADHD & Bipolar for anything in the world....It has given me headaches but also advantages and those advantages I focus on in my life.
Being ADD & Bipolar aware..should it be found in my child, it will not be as hard on the child as was for me...cause I am going through same thing and will not have to go through what I went through in terms of not knowing and will have the support the child needs from me & father..who ever he may be. :)
On the Contrary.....BLESS U!!!!! I could never understand scientific goobleygook  :D

Great minds think alike Garry :)

Hmmmm Better Poet than Mommy nothing would make me more proud :) and yes they will know that there is nothing wrong of being who are and as long as you are happy with the way you are.....DO NOT EVER DARE CHANGE 4 ANYONE But U!!!!!!!!
