View Full Version : Getting old
misclee 05-27-03, 09:55 PM Does anyone else feel really old. I'm only 33, but have always felt old. Even in my 20's...I was always complaining about being old...people would look at me like I was insane. Time just goes by so fast. I don't remember ever feeling young.
Anyone else?
unreal33 05-28-03, 01:04 AM Yes. I turned 36 this year, and feel like I missed most of my 20's. (Of course, I was in a terrible marriage at the time, and having career problems... but you'd think I'd remember more of my 20's. I had my kids then, and I weighed less, and I had more hair!) I creak now when I walk down stairs, and the gray hair is starting to show in my beard and on the sides of my head.
On the other hand, though, I've almost always looked older than my age... and my father did as well, but he held onto his relatively youthful looks for many years past his contemporaries... until his stroke 2 years ago. He was in his late 60's and people would guess mid to late 50's. So maybe I have that to look forward to :)
I've also always been "older" than people my age... not interested in partying, rave parties or all night dance clubs, etc. When I married my first wife (boy, THAT makes me sound old!) we had kids before others in our peer group, and seemed to do more "mature" activities.
As for feeling older... every morning. I can't recover from a night of drinking/partying like I used to, and I certainly can't stay up all night like I used to either!
joanrdtobe 05-28-03, 01:05 AM And the worst part of it is...the older you get....the faster time goes....it's true. I felt very old as a child. As an adult now, I actually feel younger. Maybe it's meds or not living with my parents anymore...but I do remember as a kid, I felt old, overwhelmed, overburdened and ill-equipped to handle much of anything even thought I tried.
I have always felt the opposite, since the age of 18 I have never felt like an adult.
misclee 05-28-03, 08:48 AM Yeah, but that's the weird thing.....I don't feel mature...I don't feel like an adult, but I just feel old. I feel like missed out on the maturation, and now find myself in this 33 year old body. Maybe that's why the descrepancy?
Maybe you're right Joan, maybe part of it is from being overburdoned as a child? Maybe it's from never quite fitting in? Maybe it's from being in our heads all the time? Missing out on really being a child.
Unreal, I defnintely feel like I missed out on my 20's too. Everything feels like a blur up until now, and this will probably feel like a blur to once I'm in my 40's.
I feel like I have this old soul who dreams of being a child, but is forever stuck in this grown up body that simply doesn't fit.
unreal33 05-28-03, 08:54 AM I'm with you 100% on this one. I still think of myself as a kid inside.
Oh yeah, and sometimes I even have to ask other people how old I am now. LOL. Almost forgot my birthday this year, until someone reminded me it was the next day!
misclee 05-28-03, 08:58 AM Yeah, I forget too! Maybe it's subconcious?
I also have no idea what I look like and have to ask, when I see someone who I think looks my age, "do I look her age?" I'm always trying to get a visual on what I look like.
unreal33 05-28-03, 09:04 AM Well, let's see a pic! We'll tell you! (I'll show you mine, if you show me yours... ;) )
misclee 05-28-03, 09:06 AM Gulp. Maybe when I get home from work:) Plus, I don't think people really look like they do in pictures anyway!
To this day, I think I look underage. In fact, I still expect to get carded when buying certain "things"
misclee 05-28-03, 01:23 PM I haven't been carded since I was 18!
joanrdtobe 05-28-03, 04:13 PM Oh man this thread is kind of making me sad...:) Let's ALL commit to PLAYING hard tonight, okay? We all resort to our childhoods and play, whatever that means for all of us, okay?...me? big ice-cream cone from ice-cream place that just opened near here....(fat free of course and I will insist they give me the kid's size)...then? go join the young kids in the park near where I live....

Some women LOVE grey hair (thinks it makes a man look distinguised) and as for the creaking, at least someone will know your coming down the stairs....:)

I'm playing all WEEKEND, Joan :) Tomorrow and Friday are the first vacation days I have taken since I took 2 days last summer... and I am playing golf with 3 of my college buddies in our semi-annual "drunk and blitzed" golf outing. So I will be somewhat in a fog (but not my usual ADD-induced "fog") all weekend, as I play golf and generally party my @$$ off. So tonight, it's work hard... then play hard all weekend! :D
fasttalkingmom 05-28-03, 06:40 PM I feel like 25 ! I've never had that feeling of being old.
unreal33 05-28-03, 06:42 PM Isn't the saying"you're only as old as you feel"?
Or was that "you're only as old as the woman you feel?" Um, wait... guess it was the first one. I like the second one better, though. ;)
joanrdtobe 05-28-03, 06:45 PM Eric: VERY GOOD...sounds like a blast....a typical guy blast....and it's nice you like to play golf since you don't like to watch it.....I hope you get a few holes-in-one....:)
I spent my first 45 years trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up
Than I had a bad ADD year and at the same time my body is now telling me Im not 18 no more
And Damm I still dont know what I want to be when I grow up!!!

Yeah, men get old and they're distinguished, women get old and they're just......well.....OLD!
joanrdtobe 05-29-03, 12:13 AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TRUE..............................!:)
And what's more, we live longer than they do....so we look older - LONGER....:(
misclee 05-29-03, 12:14 AM HA HA HA! You are SO right! ...and SO funny!!
:)
unreal33 05-29-03, 12:44 AM There's an old joke that goes:
"Why do husbands usually die before their wives do?"
"Because we WANT to!" ;)
joanrdtobe 05-29-03, 12:48 AM I never heard that joke.....but women do outlive men......but you men will still live to be pretty old, Eric....77 is the average life expectancy for a man now.....
misclee 05-29-03, 12:48 AM WELL!
;)
joanrdtobe 05-29-03, 12:49 AM Misclee, we'll live to be 79....:)

unreal33 05-29-03, 12:51 AM My family (the male side anyway) is especially long-lived. My Dad had a severe stroke 3 years ago and has made it this far despite all predictions to the contrary (although he's 75... not quite to the magic 77 yet)... but my grandfather lived to 86, and worked full time until he was 85 (we think giving up his job is what led to his decline) and my GREAT-grandfather...
Well, he lived to 96... and he fathered 25 children; 2 by the first wife. 4 by the second wife. And 19 by the third wife!
misclee 05-29-03, 12:51 AM This is a good one: http://test3.thespark.com/deathtest/
misclee 05-29-03, 12:52 AM I've already decided that I will live to be 140. I figure, if Moses could do it, so can I!!!
joanrdtobe 05-29-03, 02:02 PM OH NO...I took Spark test, and I'm only going to live to be 71....YUCK.....I better start taking better care of myself...all right this is it...salad for lunch....:)
Eric: Your greatgrandfather fathered 25 children???????????? Sure was busy.....no wonder he lived to be 96.....he was having too much fun to die....:)
And I'm sure there's some truth to your grandather's death being related to his having stoppped work....definitely....
My father is 75 as well....and he still works....he can't imagine NOT working....he's never been in the hospital a day in his life.....incredible genes.....I hope in the end, my genes are like HIS..
