Is ADD/ADHD considered to be a learning disability?

Dumb question, huh. I know that it has made me disabled in learning.

I don't think so....... I know those with ADD who have no learning troubles. They may have troubles with getting their work done or sticking to their studies and such.....

I have LDs and ADD I know which one is which, most of the time.... ;)

I see your point about there being a difference. Also that could be my problem staying focused and getting it done.

It's not really considered a learning disability. The main difference is that ADD symptoms can be controlled with meds, while it's impossible to treat a LD with meds. The only thing you can do for a LD is use compensating strategies.

This is why we have a lot of troubles with Insureance Companys and such as it is considered a disorder not a disabillity

I know it's not the same for everyone but I tested clearly as ADHD but had no sign of any learning disabilities.
I was told that although they are often found together it's not necessarily so.

ADD is not a Learning Disability. They are classified separately by schools, etc.: one is a psychiatric disability, the other is a learning disability.

Like itschaotic, I have clear cut ADHD, but no learning disabilites. My son does have ADHD and dyslexia. But he is as smart, if not smarter than me. I think a lot of the learning problems that come with ADHD is the lack of better education through public schools. I think the public school system has let a lot of our kids down.

I wouldn't consider a.d.d by itself a learning disorder. Throughout school i aced tests but never got the homework done, i learned alot and my teachers always told me i was one of the top students.

I was dx'ed with learning disabilities first and ADHD years later in my life. For me anyway they are 2 different disabilities.

Like chemicalmethod, I did well on tests, never could sit down long ehough to do homework, but was never active per se, i just didn't want to do the work.

Even though it's not really considered LD is it still covered on the disbilties act. People with AD/HD can receive learning accomodations in school.

My daughter Elizabeth is considered LD...because her AD/HD inhibits her ability to concentrate on her work. That is what she is classified as on her paperwork for her IEP. It depends on the school district mostly how they choose to treat or label each individual child.

There is a difference between ADD or ADHD and LD's, the first is diagnosed under the Social/Behavioral/Emotional category of psychodiagnostics, the LD's are diagnosed under Psychoeducational assessments. However, they do commonly cooccur, and a differential diagnosis (distinguishing between the two) can be difficult, because a kid w/ a learning disability can look like they have ADD mor ADHD because they might tap their fingers, be fidgity and not pay attention because they don't have the ability to do the work the rest of the class can do!!! Kids with ADHD do qualify for special ed services under a category called 'Other Health Impaired'. It's not considered a LD, but is considered a challenge in the learning environment and every ADD-ADHD kid BY LAW qualifies for services under this actegory. It is part of the Individual Disability Education Act, a federal law which is regulated by each state.
