View Full Version : ADD and movies
Mariela 09-29-04, 11:09 AM Can you get through a movie? I have always disliked to watch movies because I used to think that two hours are too much and I could never follow through what was happening in the movie. I was watching the movie and suddenly I discovered that I missed something important (and obvious to others).
Now I have my husband. He introduced me to the world of movies, and now I like them...as long as I have him to explain me what's going on. But I think that my interest have increased and I'm also getting better at understanding what is happening. Of course, some movies are easier than others.
Anyway, I still don't fully like the movies. They just entertain me.
From the book "Healing ADD" (Dr. Daniel G. Amen): "Thirty years ago a thirty- second commercial had ten three second scenes. The same commercial in 2000 have thirty-one second scenes. We are being programmed to need more stimulation in order to pay attention."
I don't seem to be programmed that way. At the contrary: I like movies from the fifties and other movies that seem boring to other people.
I have seen the "Barbie" movies with my daughters. Barbie as Rapunzel, Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie of Swan Lake. I liked those three. They are very slow paced yet interesting, and they don't have songs. They are very silent.
Yesterday I saw the new one: Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper. It is supposed to be a musical. Barbie has an ugly, annoying voice and the movie is full of songs! Anyway, that was an off topic comment. The thing is that the noisy songs and the bright colors seemed to make it difficult for me to concentrate. It was kind of hard to see this movie, but I did it.
RhapsodyInBlue 09-29-04, 11:40 AM Mariela, I am also a lover of old movies:). I can barely, if at all, sit through one movie that has loud noise, bright colors, and too much music yelling at me.
Almost like my senses find it offensive:eek: !
I like the old movies because of the peace and tranquility:) There are a few exceptions such as Shadowlands, Dead Poets Society and such, but very few. I loved Lorenzo's Oil.
I don't watch many movies, and prefer books.:)

fasttalkingmom 09-29-04, 12:24 PM Love movies and I maybe weird but if I miss something either at home or at the theater it doesn't bother me....This drives my husband nuts.... :o
I do have a hard time watching children's movies with my daughter. I've falling asleep sitting up in the theater ! :D
I love the older movies. My kids tell me they don't understand how I can watch black and white.....
Struggling 09-29-04, 04:50 PM I can only watch a movie w/ another person...otherwise I am up and down a million times...I don't know what the difference is to me, lol....and if in the first 10 min I don't "get" the movie...then I can't watch it at all.
Mariela 09-29-04, 05:37 PM I actually seem to like children movies more than grown-up stuff. I can watch Winnie Pooh over and over again. :o
Maybe it is because of my love for every aspect of animation...
...or maybe I'm just retarded. :D
I can't stand the newer previews that have the picture changing 3 times a second, with the loud, dramatic music and freaky camera work .... it irritates the #$%* out of me. My brain has enough confusion to deal with as it is! I have trouble watching movies at home. There are too many distractions, and I lose track of the story.
In the theater, I can usually follow the story and enjoy myself, but I often think the second half of the movie just wasn't as good. I don't know if that's a commentary on American filmmaking, or on my short attention span!
Oh, and I also don't like loud, intrusive soundtracks that distract from the movie. I'm sure I'm irritated about some other stuff too, but that's all I can think of right now.... ;)
hoosiergirl 09-29-04, 09:44 PM I can only watch a movie if it REALLY has my interest. If its so-so...then my mind starts to wander to other things....this drives my husband nuts. He rents a new, popular movie, orders pizza...makes our drinks...and ten minutes after the movie starts, i just get up and do other things......:(
waywardclam 09-29-04, 10:34 PM I love movies, but if you force me to sit in front of one that bores me, I will be clawing someone's eyes out (better hope I can't reach you) within 30 seconds...
I go to the movies probably once every two weeks and generally can do well to get into them and stay focused, I shift around constantly but can stay with it. I also go to alot of plays (my husband is an actor so this is actually work for us). Those I have a harder time with because the scenery doesn't tend to change, I find myself counting things on stage or anything I can do to not act bored and move around to much. I have only nodded off once during a play.
Movies at home? I fall asleep within 1/2 hour even if I really want to see them. We have to start them before 8pm or I am history.
Mariela 09-30-04, 11:47 AM hahaha...hoosiergirl...the same thing happens to me and my husband.
IndyCelt 09-30-04, 12:04 PM I can't watch movies at home because there are either too many distractions or I fall asleep almost right away. Movie theatres are much better where I can get a big tub o' corn and focus on the movie.
I do agree that there is something very annoying about the loud music and previews. Actually, I never understand the need for very loud music at movies or concerts. Is loudness supposed to hide the musician's lack of talent?
With me it depends on the movie. I love movies, but they do have to be good. Although sometimes even movies or TV shows I do like, I'll find myself off thinking of something else then I miss something. Thank God for TiVo and DVD's so I can rewind to figure it out if I want to.
I like movies. We haven't had a TV for a decade so it's pretty thrilling to see those big moving pictures (grin). I do have a lot of trouble paying attention to the story line, remembering names etc, but I keep busy noticing the things that interest me & it doesn't bother me to miss stuff, just makes it hard to discuss afterwards. The thing that bugs me about movies these days is the excessive violence. Even the Lord of the Rings which I think is awesome has way way too many gratuitous battle scenes & icky monsters. I just got a big screen projector for my work & can now play DVD's on the computer with it! I rented one of the Lord of the Rings movies & watched it about 5 times, jumping ahead through the endless battle scenes which was more enjoyable, plus I was able to catch all the details & understand what was going on after a few times. I have no problem sitting through 2-3 hours, in fact even at home I don't want to get up & hit the pause button. Having the lights off & an 8-foot wide image helps with that!
Deeperblue 10-01-04, 09:17 PM I feel uncomfortable revealing that I can lose the story line very quickly because I forget names and get the charactors mixed up. So there I sit in a movie theater lost in my own movie. I prefer watching a dvd at home. If I get lost I can just go back and if (when!) I get bored, I can walk away
