How many cups per day do you drink? If not coffee, other caffienated beverages?

misclee
05-30-03, 09:29 AM
I usually have about 3 cups in the morning before leaving for work, but then often have diet Dr. Pepper in the afternoon. I picked three because that is ALWAYS the case, the other is variable.

No not coffee at all....in fact not even coke...diet or regular....but I DO like tea and hot chocolate....I have these about twice per week......I USED to be BIG coffee drinker....but believe it or not, it seems the MEDS have killed my taste or cravings for coffee....now the thought of it...yuck-o.....:)

Some days I don't drink any at all then other days I will have few cups. Like many other things in my ADD life I'm a bit sporadic.

Ooh, that would be great if my meds decrease my coffee cravings!

It's possible Misclee.....very much so....but not my craving for chocolate...ONLY my craving for caffeine...I just can't stand the thought of Caffeine....after meds started....

I would have to say that my coffee intake is directly connected to how little sleep I got the nite before, and how much work I have to do.

Okay, this is an interesting thread. :) I chose 2 cups a day, but I actually don't do much caffeine anymore since the summer & starting meds. I have 1.5 cups in the morning of decaf. and sometimes (not everyday, just afternoons when I'm really beat & I know I've got other work to still do) I will have 1 cup of coffee - half decaf, half regular in the afternoon (between 4-6pm). I find this gives me JUST the boost & clear-headedness I need to get through the remainder of the evening & stay motivated to work on stuff. Otherwise, I'm awfully tired by4-6pm and don't get anything done once I get home, somedays. Which I don't like. :(

The reasons I cut back on the caffeine & sugar intake (before August, I would easily have 2-3 cups of coffee a day - full strength) are simple & health/comfort related: I was having a lot of anxiety/relationship issues last spring (well, the last few years, actually) and I noticed that TOO much coffee - especially in the afternoon or if I drank more than 1-2cups at a sitting - caused a negative reaction, i.e. feeling REALLY jittery, edgy, and extra anxious (for no apparant emotional reason). I definitely did NOT need the extra edginess. So, by spring, I had cut down to only drinking "half-calf" strength coffee (half reg./half decaf), the same #of times throughout the day.

Once I started the Concerta in Dec., I didn't think it was a good idea to take any extra stimulant-type things (i.e. caffeine) so I switched to "decaf" (I figured if I'm not supposed to take sudafed, then maybe caffeine wasn't good for me either?) Now, a few months later, I've decided that a mix of half & half caf/decaf in the afternoon if I'm feeling drained, is okay. As long as I don't get any bad reactions from it, and it helps, then it's okay.

Oddly, I have also noticed that I'm pickier about the coffee I drink - did my taste buds change? If it's not decent coffee - either it sits on my desk, untouched, or it does icky, acidic things in my stomach.

And Misclee - I notice that I, too, will look for a cup of coffee when I'm feeling a tad anxious (at least in the past, I did) - that does seem odd.

I don't do soda hardly at all anymore. Too much sugar. Makes me wayyy to edgy, often times.

I drink about 1/2 a cup of coffee in the morning. No soda,no tea,no hot choc. Water, water ,water ! sugar and caff. makes me so hyper, then grouchy and tired ...lol... 2 weeks out of a month I crave choc. very badly. Can't drink coffee at night or I wont be able to stay asleep.

I drink about 4 to 7 cups of coffee a day at work and then not very much on the weekend, maybe a cup or two at church. But If I had the money, I would go to Starbucks every morning on my way to work and get a Venti, regular coffee. I Lovvvvve Starbucks. But I will really drink any coffee that is easily available.

At one point a long time back I wanted write a book about coffee shops when I lived in San Jose, CA. I collected a ton of cards and brochures from all the coffee shops in my area, drove my wife crazy because I never took notes about all of the shops that I went to collect the cards....Then that Hyperfocus died....and I moved on to something else...never did write more than a page of notes about coffee shops. :)

Okay James...sounds like a book of some kind is in your future......authoring one that is.....whether about coffee or not.....

Incidentally, Starbucks has exploded. THEY are everywhere....Even in this little rinky-dink town where I live in Southern California...we have a few of them...and I LOVE the hot chocolate...they make it with skim milk for me...YUM...:)

I love coffee, but I try to avoid it. While I was in school last semester, I got a short latté from Tully's once a week as a treat and to help me stay awake during my night class, but after a while I found that the weekly cup started playing hell with my nerves, so I had to stop.

My mom says there's a chemical in coffee besides caffine that raises your adreneline and really isn't good for you, so I think I'll avoid it for a while yet.

I have a funny coffee incident....When I was in college I was up late one night doing some school work....and I had the coffee flowing. I had this cup of coffee, this mug that said Colorado on it, the kind you get in the airport, and it was HUUUGE. It held about half a pot of coffee. Well I downed one cup and then I had another cup, probably in less than an Hours time. After that I was freaking out....I thought I was going crazy....I called my sister on the phone and I was crying, saying that I lost my mind, not realizing how hard the caffine had hit me....She talked to me for a while and helped me figure out that it was just the caffine.

That would never happen to me today....I have a much greater tolerance to caffine!! :P Who needs ADD drugs when I have caffine?!?! My wife pointed out to me that coffee for me may be a way of "self-medicating" I love coffee. I figure that I don't drink, I don't smoke, don't do any drugs of any kind....Coffee is my one vice.

I was so madd this morning....I got a Starbucks coffee this morning on my way to work and was getting out of my car to go into work. I set my coffee on the roof of my car while I was getting my stuff and there was a little drop of coffee on my roof that that I wipe off, but when I did that, the whole Venti cup of coffee tipped over and pored down my wind shield and my door!!!! I was so angry! The cup landed upside down on the grown still standing and then I just stomped the cup flat with my foot!!
Right after that I went inside and got the vending machine for the free coffee, the junk coffee compared to Starbucks...What can I say, I am a Java Junkie:)

joanrdtobe
06-02-03, 02:37 PM
Darnit James....SORRY that happened....okay, if I were you, tomorrow morning, I would go BACK to that Starbucks and tell them what happened and ask if you can have a cup for free...since THIS morning, you didn't get to drink the one they gave you....since you're such a good customer, she should say "yes"....:)

My wife found a good quote for me, a coffee fanatic:

Maybe I should add it to my signature :)

Yes I did!! But I did not spill it. I don't go there everyday, only once or twice a week and only get the regular coffee. Not the Triple Shot-Mocha-with a double flip coffee!! My wife always gets the Mocha Frappacino, when she does get coffee.

I drink a LOT of caffeine. Easily a pot of coffee and at minimum 2 liters of Mountain Dew. Back in the IT dot.com boom, every job I worked at had free soda & other beverages to drink. And my last job (which wasn't a dot com, but was a successful non-traditional company still) did the same.

When I was being diagnosed my doctor asked how much caffeine I drank and I let him know. He was a bit shocked. Told me that in huge doses, caffeine can help concentration, so it might of been a way of me sub-conciously self-medicating myself so I could focus on whats at hand.

I am trying to cut back though, after I run through my plethora of soda right now I'm going to get all caffeine free, and mix my coffee to make it half-caf. Hopefully I can cut back on the stuff

First post .. how ironic it should be on coffee.. lol..
Will intro myself later but for now..

I'm hard-pressed to find a time of the day when I'm without a cup of coffee by my side... Have been told I don't just drink it but form an intimate relationship with each and every cup... Which is probably true coz generally its very cold by the time I get around to finishing it and has possibly been reheated a time or two :). Still, I live on the stuff.
Although... This does seem to be moving into a past tense situation. I found it very interesting that others reported less desire for it after starting on meds. Me too!! I've found it all rather odd and interesting until I discovered this poll. Yup.. officially 'diagnosed' and began medn only four weeks ago and I've noticed a very definite reduction in my desire for coffee - and thus intake - ever since.
Self medication? Definitely.

Light N Laughter,
Opal

I have never drunk coffee in my life, but have been addicted to caffeine in chocolate, Coca-Cola, and Barq's Root Beer (Hires, A&W, and MUG don't have caffeine).

However, since reading Dr. Amen's book, I have 95% kicked the habit.

I will still indulge in chocolate or Barq's for special occasions or if I know for some reason I am going without sleep and/or need to cheat for an energy boost. But I am trying to keep it as rare as possible. Also, I NEVER have Coke or Pepsi any more, if you look at the ingredients listing, there are a lot of terrible things in there...

Phosphoric Acid melts your bones (and teeth).

And there is another chemical that after it gets through your liver is chemically very similar to the drug Ecstasy.

Hi OpalDreaming and Welcome!

(I always feel a bit silly saying that as I haven't been here very long myself, and still haven't sat down to "contribute properly" here, as I imagine it...)

Actually, funnily enough, it was coffee and caffeine which first brought me to this forum - I've always been a bit of a caffeine junky, but since last giving up smoking (April) I found my coffee and tea consumption more problematic (I have since read about a connection between caffeine metabolising and nicotine). I seem to swing too easily between withdrawal (feeling drained, mildly 'travel sick' without going anywhere or migraine) and jitteriness, which made me want to give it up, which is easier said than done, at least if you want to do anything else at the same time.

I think I had better stop rambling and go and make myself a cuppa then get some work done...

Greetings to Perth, or wherever you are in WA,

Jonathan.

And they are opening a Starbucks RIGHT HERE in the library...imagine that....I swear Starbucks are EVERYWHERE...who here has one within five feet of where they live? I bet everyone does.....And now they have those S'mores drinks.....:)

I put down "two" cups to mean -- 1-2 cups of tea in the AM; and random stuff for lunch (cokes, "decaf" espressos/coffee). I don't dare drink anything at or after dinner, because I like to sleep.....

I used to drink 2-3 tall glasses of iced tea a day after high school (and into my 20s) .

By the first time I left graduate school, I had been drinking coffee by the carafe. I kept up the habit in my first job in "the real world". However, after a few months, I got a little annoyed with myself and decided I could do without the heartburn and nightsweats.

I actually quit cold-turkey. That's when I discovered I had been addicted.... But I stuck it out and didn't touch it again until I went back to grad school a year later.

I went to the new Starbucks by my house and got myself a free Venti Mocha Frapacino, mmm good. I also was able to get my boys a small hot chocolate each. We hung out listening to music for awhile, they had a guy playing guitar and singing a bunch of cover tunes for the Grand Opening. It was fun. But the Frappacios are expensive, would have been about 4 bucks! I will stick with the 1.65 coffee a couple times a week. Sorry I am rambling along.

i'm not a coffee drinker, but i *"love"* tea!

however; i'm reading dr. amen's book "healing add", and in it, he suggests/ recommends that a person who's on stimulant medication (concerta, ritalin and the others) reduce his or her caffeine intake, because caffeine tends to limit the effect of stimulant medication...

so, now i'm considering quitting black and green tea, and just drink red tea (which isn't really a "tea" - it's made from the leaves off an african trea/bush, and is totally de-caf(f)!

I'm with you, Mel. I gotta have coffee in the morning too. And in the afternoon, and in the evening. lol

I used to just have coffee in the morning and then drink Coke the rest of the day, but in order to cut down my sugar intake, I just started drinking coffee all day long. Still have a soda with lunch usually.

I'm on Strattera (non-stimulant) so, unfortunately, my desire for caffeine is still as powerful as ever. I'm sure it's not good for me though. Perhaps I'll do something about it one of these days. One thing at a time, ya know?

I'm completely convinced that I self medicate with caffeine. I always thought it was kinda funny that I could drink it at night and still go to sleep with no problem.

For many years I would drink 5 - 10 cups of very strong coffee every day at work, but not at home. At home I would drink a lot of Coke. At least 2 liters a night, on weekends more because I'd be drinking it during the day.

But I've cut down heaps since being medicated. I still drink coffee at work but maybe 3-4 cups a day and I might drink a coke every now and then.

Funny story, my son's pedeatrician said he thought he could get a fairly accurate map of the occurance of Adult ADD by looking at coke consumption figures. :)

Yes that doc really has a point! I drink about 5-10 cups/day. Also if I'm too tired to sleep I go drink a cup of coffee and then I'll sleep like a baby :) But if I drink TOO much, I'll fall a sleep! Once at work I didn't have anything to do, it was 2 hours left before I could go home so I was drinking coffee... About 5 cups in less than one hour... I fell asleep in the sofa. And NOONE waked me up!!! I woke up by myself 3 hours later... 2 hours after I sould have gone home. Also I fell alseep on the bus on my way home. But a nice lady sitting next to me didn't wake me up until endstation even though I was sleeping with my head on her shoulder!!! *g* :D :D

I remember my first caffein rush. I was at a "nerd-party" when I was 17 yo. I was drinking Dr Pepper and something called Jolt Cola for 24 hours with very little sleep (maybe 4 hours) and hotdogs and pizza as food. I believe I drank about 30 Dr Peppers. When I was on the train on my way home I got that caffein-tiredness shaking and heart rushing and sweating. Ppl thought I was high on something and everyone but my friend moved away to other seats. It was a creepy experience, but at the same time pretty cool to see other ppl's reactions :p

I don't drink anything with caffeine in it for personal reasons. That said, I do recommend Vivarin to people who have ADHD and don't get meds for whatever reasons. It's a 200mg Caffeine tablet, the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee in pill form.

It did take the edge off of my symptoms if I drank a ton of it back in the day, but never enough to really "calm me down" the way Ritalin does...

Right now I'm around 5-6 cups per day, but my dr. says need to cut back now that I'm on meds coz sometimes I get all weird and shaky. Heart goes boom-boom-boom. She finds my breakfast of coffee and cigarettes horrible, but agrees that I've probably been self-medicating since I discovered caffiene and nicotine.

My friends also think it's pretty funny that more than 2 cups in row will put me to sleep.

My dear husband gets up before me and makes a pot of coffee and a pot of expresso every morning and we have a 'shot in the dark', a mixture of both (with milk). I need at least two of these to function! I used to live and thrive off of coffee. I was an official caffiene addict. Waiting tables got me into it...in the middle of a friday or saturday night shift I would start to wane when I really needed to be running even faster, so I would drink a waterglass full of coffee w/ a straw..
now if i drink coffee I HAVE to use a straw. But I gave up coffee. I'm on adderall and wellbutrin now and if I have coffee now it makes me super sick. I'm out for an entire day. I cannot talk, and I'm stuck in bed with severe nausea. So ..NO caffiene for me.
i'm sensitive to drugs and caffiene made me HIGH and happy. I crashed like crazy though, and it did make me grouchy and aggressive. (aggressive in a personality type of way, not physically!)

I voted as 4-cups.....my first 2 in the morning are out of a 32 oz mason jar. My next one in the afternoon is at least a 24oz, and if I have one in the evening its also a 24 oz.
That is 4 cups, right?
I wondered for years why I drank so much coffee, and more than most anyone I knew. When I learned that stimulants were a common treatment for ADHD I began to understand: coffee doesn't make me hyper or jittery or nervous; its just the opposite. I drink it when I need to sit down and concentrate on something and need to think clearly and stay focused; when I'm tense and stressed it relaxes me.
Focused and calm are how I'd describe its effects.
Cola, chocolate or tea don't even come close.

I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I couldn't live without my Red Bull! When I'm able to, I drink a couple cans a day (unfornutaly, that can get expensive!). Then there's all the Red Fuel (same thing, but on the pop gun) I drink at work, sometimes 4 or 5 16oz. glass fulls. I know that's way too much caffine than anyone should consume, so I have been trying to cut back and drink more iced tea and water while I'm at work.

My Life ADDs Up
11-07-04, 06:48 AM
I cut out coffee completely after I started to seriously suspect having ADD. Before that, since I repair coffee and espresso equipment, I was having 2 to 4 cups of various sizes. I have always been sporadic about coffee though. Anyway, I quit after suspecting ADD because I always knew that coffee didn't ever do me favors mentaly. I just got anxious and somewhat wierded out. It gave me energy, but at the cost of focus.

Now that I have been on Strattera for 2 months, I thought that perhaps it was working enough that I could drink coffee again. This was a funny theory since I'm doubting the Strattera is helping me much at all. I seemed to handle it a little better, but not much. I really noticed my talking being impulsive, fast, and my conversations were even more rambly. I really felt like my boss and co-workers had to have noticed me being a bit of a spaz. I do tend to be a little paranoid anyway though.

So now I am back down to 0 even if I'm tired. Oddly, I actually have craved coffee the past three days, and I was never hooked on it before. I don't think I learn my lessons ever and still keep thinking that I will benefit from a caffeine boost.

I used to drink at least 1 cup a day, but after starting meds, my doc said to lay off caffeine. I still give in to chocolate every once in a while, or a cup of tea, but found I usually crave tea/coffee when I'm already agitated, and it ends up just making me feel worse when it wears off.

I only have one large cup in the morning. I am also on Adderall (about 2 weeks into it).

Before being diagnosed (a couple weeks ago), I often wondered why I would get really tired after have a "Depth Charge" (double espresso and large brew of the day) from the local coffee shop. It would have the opposite effect on me.

I all makes sense now.

I dont drink coffee, but I drink Diet Cokes all day long. I keep one going 24/7. I cant remember a time since I left home (age 17) that I havent had a soft drink going. Due to stomach trouble at times, I have to lay off the cokes....but drink tea in place of it. I stopped the caffinated stuff when I was pregnant, just one coke or glass of tea a day to ward off the caffeine headache from hell. As soon as the kids were born..literally...lol, the first thing I had was an ice cold Diet Coke. Nothing has ever tasted better than those cokes.

I am not much of a coffee drinker unless it's iced coffee. I love tea though. I drink between 5-10 cups a day and it would probably be more if I didn't keep forgetting that I left it in the microwave. :p I started drinking lots of tea a while ago because I was always tired or unmotivated but I found it just made me calm and less irritable but never got energy from it. I never understood it but I guess it makes since now. I think I found away to self medicate without knowing it.

it seems my meds totally kill the effect caffeine has on me... I must say that I wasn't really sensitive to the stuff to start with (5-6 cans of energydrink to notice it even faintly) but now when I take my meds I have to drink 8-10 cans to notice the effect...

but it does feel like you're being shot into hyperspace when the meds wear off... very funny when you're in front of a full classroom and you discover that you left your meds in your coat pocket which is still in your car parked at the far side of the carpark at the other side of the building where you are teaching....

I have two doses of coffee per day. I wake up at 5pm and make a 4-cup pot and drink that. That gives me the energy since I'm waking up to clean up after dinner, help kids with homework, give kids bath, do my workout and get off to work by 9pm. I'll get a 24oz Wawa(convienence store in Pa/Nj/DE area) about 1am to get me thru the night.

On weekends, I might do 3 doses a day since I'm trying to stay up during the day when i'm normally sleeping.

I was on Straterra awhile and it totally killed the craving for coffee.

I gave up the habit long ago ever since I found out that coffee was detrimental to my mental acuity. Take Gingko or Vitamin C supplements instead.

i used to drink tons of coffee...
before i was in my twenties i hadn't so much as ingested a mg. of caffiene unless it was contained in its natural way in chocolate etc....
then i started waiting tables etc..i got absolutely hooked on caffiene. it made me happy. and then it made me crash
i'm now happily off of caffiene
anyone that doesn't think caffiene a drug: you're wrong
i don't think there's anything 'wrong' with it..
i just think that this is the reality of caffiene. its a drug.
anyway
i'm glad my leash is cut.

My coffee intake varies from day to day. Some days I can drink 3 cups in the morning, other days I barely finish 1/2 a cup. Some days I don't have any in the afternoon, other times I drink the stuff all day. I drank the most coffee when I waitressed - all during my shift I would drink mostly coffee (it was free and pretty good).
I don't drink cola or hardly any soda for that matter...once in a very great while.

Before I started on Straterra I used to be a MAJOR caffien-a-holic. I'd drink easily 6 cups of strong black tea a day. Plus sodas. Now if I drink more than one in the morning I'm buzzing like nobodies business. Can't handle the caffiene anymore. Decaf sucks!

Lots and lots of peppermint tea now!

When I wake up in the morning, I just can't get started until I've had that first,
piping hot pot of coffee. Oh, I've tried other enemas...:p

I HAVE to have coffee in the morning. I also have about three cups daily, and then switch to water, of which I drink about two medium sized bottles during work hours. I'm always, always thirsty (still). But I can't function without my morning Java.

Coffee is good for my energy and slight mood elevation, but two cups really aggravates my distractibility. Impossible to study for a test on Coffee.

I have a cup a day and sometimes a tea later in the morning but decaffienated. Caffiene makes me anxious and irritable. I've learned it's not worth it. My problem has always been craving sugar. I've switched to raw sugar in my coffee and I find I crave sugar less. Next I hope to eliminate it entirely.

I used to have 1-2 cups of very black coffee in the morning, a Red Bull on my way to work, a cup of green tea at work, then another Red Bull on my way home. Since I've started Ritalin, however, I can't tolerate that much caffeine. I'm still experimenting with the optimal dosages of Ritalin & caffeine. I'll probably decrease the caffeine and, if needed, increase the Ritalin. While caffeine makes me more "awake", it doesn't do diddly for my focusing abilities.

It was weird when I realized that I was getting my caffeine buzz after the caffeine should have worn off and that shortly after I drank coffee in excess of two cups I was calming down. I'm trying to cut back, since I'm hoping to start stimulent medication next week.
