View Full Version : Getting Stuck on something, Hyperfocusing, getting Un-stuck?
jimmmaaa 05-30-03, 02:26 PM I was wondering what kind of stategies people use to get "Un-Stuck" if they are hyperfocusing on some topic or activity. I am fairly new to ADD and its ins and outs and was wondering what people on this board did to redirect themselves back to things they need to do, especially when work related.
misclee 05-30-03, 04:34 PM Gosh.....usually I stay stuck until something rips me from whatever I'm doing!
Barbette 05-30-03, 04:53 PM Wild horses, ..... couldn't drag me away ...
Sorry can't help you there . GBH perhaps. ( Great Bodily Harm )
Using some type of reminder helps me. Like setting a timer. Not that I will always stop when the timer goes off but I have more of an idea of how much time has actually gone by.
misclee 05-30-03, 08:51 PM Very good idea Tara, especially when working on the computer. That might help a great deal in areas where I know I get stuck, but often it just happens and I wouldn't even know to set the timer.
joanrdtobe 05-30-03, 09:15 PM Barbette: I'm with you...wild horses couldn't drag me away....Are you a Rolling Stones fan by any chance....the best love song of their entire repertoire has those lyrics and is called Wild Horses...
OR do you just like horses??:)
Barbette 06-04-03, 12:15 AM hehe, yea, I was hoping some one would recognize that. I often think of song lyrics as answers to questions. or xplanations of things.
joanrdtobe 06-04-03, 12:46 AM Barbette: My hero today.................YOU........................h ere's a hug: ((((((((((((((((Barbette))))))))))))))))))))))))) :)
andrea76 06-04-03, 11:48 AM usually guilt draws me back to what's important,
knowing that i need to get something done and i'm not doing what i'm supposed to,

Yes, I would have to say the same. Hello everyone, I am pleased to find this group. I am a busy mom but sometimes I just get stuck. I try to refocus on what my goals are each day. Usually if I feel that I am stuck I go back and do something that I know I ought to be doing...like attending to the needs of my family. I cannot go wrong there. I feel more at peace when I start from that perspective.
joanrdtobe 06-29-03, 02:08 PM Well, I guess what I'm thinking about is what has been said...looking at the overall goals of the day...what needs to get done today? Ususally I'll wait until the last minute...until the UN-hyperfocussing finally is successful....to achieve those goals...but I have ADD...and sometimes it's the best I can do....
sarasmyl24 07-06-03, 01:28 AM I'm also the type that stays there until it's done or something pulls me out of it.
I was wondering if anyone felt physically drained afterwards? I become so exauhsted, and I think it's because of the way I do it. I almost reach a point of insanity because it is usally with Art or Philosophy and It could last a good solid 16 hours. Today I started at 4:30am and It's 9:30pm now and I'm just coming out. I decided to start teaching myself about chemisty and then it went to behavior analysist. Anyway, It feels like I'm coming down when I'm done.
a balance would be nice. less harsh. then maybe my kids could reach me.
InattentiveType 07-29-03, 04:13 PM This is one of the main things I'm hoping medication will help with. I hate that I waste so much time hyperfocusing on un-important things.
Even when I drag myself away from whatever I'm entralled with my brain won't let me stop thinking about it.
sarasmyl24 07-31-03, 01:21 AM It does help to manage it. I found it doesn't really stop but you can pull yourself away and come back to it later. But I still will get caught up and go pretty deep, especially if I'm writing about something, but it's not so much as Hyper maybe just overfocusing now. It's always something that I'm interested in though. So it hasn't felt like a waist of time, only when it's negative. That's when I want to stop. But being able to pull myself away now has been the medication working.
Good luck with the medication it has done wonders for me and I think I've said this before but learn as much about ADD/ADHD as you can, that helps just as much.
