Came across these articles today and thought they were worth mentioning here.

"HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (AP) -- The software testers at Aspiritech are a collection of characters. Katie Levin talks nonstop. Brian Tozzo hates driving. Jamie Specht is bothered by bright lights, vacuum cleaners and the feel of carpeting against her skin. Rider Hallenstein draws cartoons of himself as a DeLorean sports car. Rick Alexander finds it unnerving to sit near other people.

This is the unusual workforce of a U.S. startup that specializes in finding software bugs by harnessing the talents of young adults with autism.
Traits that make great software testers -- intense focus, comfort with repetition, memory for detail -- also happen to be characteristics of autism. People with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism, have normal to high intelligence and often are highly skilled with computers."

"At first glance, Specilisterne looks just like any other thriving software company. However, these colleagues had to meet a certain job requirement in order to get hired -- they must have autism.

"I could only work in a supermarket before," employee Hille who has high-functioning autism called Asperger Syndrome told us.

Specilisterne means "Specialists," and they test software. It is a tedious click by click process where most of us would lose focus and make mistakes.

The workers at the Denmark-based company share many of the same life experiences. Many were told they were unemployable, that they were too disabled to focus professionally. The social side of office life also eluded them, they were incapable of joining in with the lunchtime crowd."

Interesting. If only there were jobs like that in California.

I think Google and Microsoft have said that they support hiring people with Asperger's. I've heard that Best Buy and 3M state that they hire people with Asperger's AND have policies in place that ensure those people are hired--based on the position they apply for and/or are qualified for.

Here's a Non-profit organization that is working to education companies and employers about the benefits of hiring people with Asperger's.

Also, JobsforAutism holds events and they hire people with Asperger's and Austim to work at those events. On December 10, there's a concert in San Diego sponsored by them. It might be something to look into, Nate....
