Why is it that that the community college I'm planning to go to in the fall only requires you to fill out a simple form for admission, but requires a minimum 2.5 GPA, an essay, and 2 letters of recommendation to get into the dorm?

Djiril: Is it a special kind of dormitory such as a fraternity? In any event, do you meet the qualifications? How's your GPA? and can you get the letters of rec? (WE can help with the essay here:) )

Wow, none of the community colleges around here have on campus housing.

Maybe the want to keep the rif raf away. I remember some of the people that lived in the state college dorm with me.

As far as I can tell it's just a normal dorm. The description is here (http://www.redwoods.edu/eureka/housing/index.htm).

I find it strange that there isn't any mention of the essay or letters except on the application form.

I probably have the GPA provided they'll let me pretend my one semester at Chabot college never happened, which the person I talked to on the phone today seemed to think was alright. I can be a good writer when I can get my brain to function right, but who do you get letters of reccomendation from for these things?

No it looks like if you gave them your high school transcript it would be okay...where do you get letters of recommendation? good question. From bosses? Present and previous. Or previous places you have volunteered. Or previous teachers. Or any type of service or community work you've done...the person in charge.....

So Djiril:

How's it going with this? Dorm issues and transcripts and letters of recommendation and essay, etc.?? :)

Well, my mom helped me brainstorm on the essay last night, and I've got a basic outline. There were just a lot of "obvious" things that I never thought of as related to the assigned topic. I'm feeling more like I can write it now and am going to aim for getting it done in the next few days.

I don't think the other requirements will be too hard. I'm aiming to get letters from the volunteer coordinator in a place where I've volunteered for 6 years and my former boss at UCSF. (I worked there as a lab assistant for a while.) If one of those proves too hard I have one already from when I was an IWE at my High School.

It seems that my GPA just falls short of their requirement. I sent the application off anyway just in case, but it seems I have to find an apartment in Eureka now.

Does anyone know of a good search engine?

Yes....www.homestore.com OR www.apartsment.com

I'm sorry your GPA falls short of the requirement Djiril....I KNOW how frustrating that can be....Perhaps after a semester there, with good grades....you can THEN get into the dorm? Congrats for keeping hanging in there with this process.:D
