View Full Version : Help ELLIMA01 11-16-04, 04:29 PM Has Anyone Had A Child Develop Tics While On Concerta? NewMomToADD 11-17-04, 01:07 PM Yes, my son did. His were involuntary mouth movements. Almost like he was saying "EEE, OOO, EEE, OOO." They actually calmed down after a couple days, but it turns out that this is not the med for my boy. He developed some other side effects that got progressively worse such as rapid heart rate, nervousness and muscle twitching. So the doctor told us to discontinue it. This is the first med we've tried, but we're going to hold off for a while before trying another. We're going to see a specialist in Jan. BettyBoop 11-17-04, 01:07 PM I don't know if my son's isms would be considered tics or not. I think that he is OCD. He constantly pulls at his shirt. It has to be as far away from his neck as possible. He also pulls his socks up ALL THE TIME, his pants up ALL THE TIME and his underwear up ALL THE TIME. He pulls his underwear up so much that he sometimes gets sores on his back where he has rubbed the skin off pulling them up. It's crazy. He doesn't have any facial things really that he does though. Just very sensitive about how his clothes feel on his body. Does that make sense? Gregster 11-17-04, 01:21 PM Stimulants will sometimes bring out tics. No experience as to if they go away with time - they might. Another stimulant may not necessarily bring them out - Concerta may bring out tics but something like Adderall might not. ADHD people are often very sensitive to touch and irritation from clothing, etc. So your son's habit of pulling at his clothes may not be a tic or obsessive compulsive behaviour - although if it causes sores, it does sound a little OCD to me (but what do I know??). Have you ever tried to cut the labels out of his clothing Betty? A lot of ADHD people do this 'cus even after washing multiple times those darn labels still sometimes itch! Socks can bunch up and chafe. Even the material itself might be bothering him - I never wear wool - not even wool socks - the feeling of wool against my skin drives me nuts. BettyBoop 11-17-04, 01:30 PM Well I know I do my socks too. I can't stand for them to wrinkle inside my shoe under my feet. His shirt thing isn't the tags. He pulls the front of the shirt down. Even V neck shirts that don't come anywhere close to his neck he just pulls on them constantly. I will definitely try cutting all his tags out if you think that might help him out though. Thanks!!! |
