ADMIN'S NOTE: WE HAVE CREATED AN ADD FORUMS TEAM AT THE SITE LISTED BELOW, TO HELP FIND THE CURE FOR CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES!

Computer users are being asked to donate their unused processor power to help solve social and environmental research problems. The IBM-backed project, called World Community Grid, aims to put the untapped processing power of millions of unused computers into use; crunching numbers for scientists working to understand diseases like HIV, Alzheimer's and cancer, to improve forecasting of natural disasters and to support environmental studies.

The first project that will benefit is the Human Proteome Folding Project. This is working to identify the components of the Human Proteome, a key step in developing cures for diseases like malaria and tuberculosis.

Like the Seti@Home project which inspired it, volunteers on the World Community Grid will download software to their computer to tackle these computationally intensive research problems. According to reports, IBM has lent the project its backing to provide a measure of respectability, and allay corporate concerns about the security of downloading such software.

Linda Sanford, an IBM executive vice president, told Reuters: "We are looking for the individual, not the institution, per se, to contribute. (Companies) will let their employees know when they can participate." She said that the project gave people an opportunity to contribute to a good cause without having to fork over hard-earned cash, adding: "Not everyone can contribute with dollars."

The project has been designed to handle around 10m volunteer machines. IBM has donated hardware, software, and tech support services to the project. For details of how to sign up, go here ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=C55XNJBR9N1).

ADMIN'S NOTE: This project to cure cancer, uses your computer's idle time (when you're not using it) to help with the mathematical calculations needed to identify a cure for cancer. For more information, please go to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=C55XNJBR9N1 Once you've downloaded the software, run it, and create an account for yourself. All it does is run in the background. Its that simple!
:D

Though, I find it hard to believe he could resist me and my charms *giggles* and we have been thru this scare twice already praying the third is not the charm.

Install the software by double-clicking on the software you downloaded. Once its done installing, it will ask you to choose a user ID and password. Once you've done that and clicked ok, you're all set! If you downloaded the software from the link you clicked at the beginning of this thread, you're automatically signed up on the ADD Forums team!

P.S. The same technology that they're using to discover medications for cancer, alzheimers and others, could also be used to find better meds for ADD, Bipolar disorder and others. The more of you that join up, the faster we see these medical breakthroughs happen!

Andrew
11-23-04, 09:29 AM
That's awesome :) When you first install the software, it will connect and download the first bit of data it needs to work on...then, everytime your puter finishes a piece (at 100%) it will connect, transmit it, and get a new little piece of data :)

If you haven't joined already...Its real easy!!!!!

Tara

What only 6 people....Hopefully more of you will participate after Turkey Day!!!

Draga

Put New Computer On your Christmas wish for Draga...

My computer was never connecting to the server and I took a real close look at Requirments, Needs 128 MB or RAM to work and I only have 64 MB and it can go no further:mad: It makes me soo mad cause I can not help right now. Even if there are millions who can and are in this...one less ain't gonna hurt it maybe but also aint gonna help fight cancer either.

...But I am not one to give up so easy so...Heh..time to go Puter shopping and get a faster computer...not just for myself but so I can do this with ya'll. be it 6 people or 100.

Andrew
11-25-04, 12:42 AM
Wow...I'm sorry your puter doesnt currently support it, but i'm glad you're shopping for a new one :)

Ian
11-26-04, 12:51 AM
Too bad they only support winduhs. I'm not using Micro$oft products so I can't participate. I wrote to the company that is hosting this suggesting that IBM could likely make it happen for Linux users to. IBM has sunk millions into Linux in the past couple of years.
So sad.

Andrew,

Can you look at the attached and let me know if this is just a normal windows explorer alert, please?---never mind I have to learn the winzip program first, print screen to word doc is too large attachment:(

I figure that's probably what it is but wondering about the address I see MK@SMIT...

And reading the directions I read you give permission for the amount of hard drive space you want to allocate...I'm not there yet, but wondering if you have suggestions?

"Hard Disk Storage
On your preferences page, you set the megabytes of hard disk space allocated and available to World Community Grid projects. The lesser of the amount of hard drive space allocated and the amount of total space available on your hard drive partition, is divided by the Hard Disk Storage value of World Community Grid Comparison Device. The result of this calculation is then multiplied by the CPU time used to complete the work unit and return the results to World Community Grid Servers"

Ok one more question for a paranoid-when-it-comes-to-my-pc person is the space that is used for these projects automatically cleaned up/purged after completion of projects?

Thanks in advance,

charlie
11-27-04, 05:25 PM
oops took to long --cannot edit above message

never mind most of the above questions Andrew, I've joined the team.

Reminder all-- after installation find where you installed it and double-click to start the registering process...just like BIG says in like the 3rd post!

if in doubt read the directions always works for me ---hardy har har

I am still interested if these projects do an auto-clean of some sort so there's no data storage to manually delete.

Andrew
11-28-04, 01:46 PM
The program will transfer all data off your computer, once its done with the calculations, making room for the next batch. At least, that's my understanding of how it works. Great to have you aboard!

Ian
04-01-05, 03:50 AM
You might want to seek out a board or contact for this software you installed to see if you can find others that have had the problem. You'll want to have the details of your system handy. Your CPU speed, amount of RAM, hard drive space that remains free, what operating system and whether or not your updates are done for that system.

Sometimes it's a help to update the bios when strange things occur but that can be a dangerous thing to do if you aren't confident.
Hope you find some answers.
Cheers! Ian.

It just so happens that I wandered onto Google LABS today, clicked on Google Compute, and was linked to Folding@home. I wasn't sure if I wanted the particular download listed there, so I did a google search on ‘donate idle computer time (http://www.google.com/search?q=donate+idle+computer+time)’ and found that the world community grid (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/) was the vastly most popular site. I decided to go ahead and download it on this computer. I logged in as Al Fox.

Now, later this same day, I wander these forums a bit to find myself linked from elsewhere (http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24464) to this very thread by coincidence!

Yep, I did:). I was eventually going to speak up about it (sending a PM) when I had submitted more "results", but here, I already have 23, for 3,746 points:cool:. (Actually, it seems it didn't count the first one toward the group, so I instead have given 22 for 3,555.)

Likely because IBM is a major contributor to the project.

Okay, I was trying to download the page and I have it but not for cancer it came up for AIDS how do I get the page for cancer? I would like to particiapte but cant find the right download.Actually, you're participating in both, in random alternation.

If you would like to specify which project(s) you are contributing to, then just go to the My Projects page (https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProjects.do). You will get a choice between AIDS and another project called "Proteome Folding" which helps prevent cancer amongst other things.

I am just wondering why it is available for Windows and Linux not Mac??Likely because IBM is a major contributor to the project. On the other hand, Apple has been working with IBM lately, so that argument's not going to last. Hopefully, neither will our difficulty in getting Macs to participate.

This World Community Grid project has come to an end. Thank you to everyone that participated (see the results of our team here http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=C55XNJBR9N1 )

If you have the software installed, you can uninstall it now, or look for other worthwhile community grid projects to participate in.
