Hi All,

I know that I have and been treated for ADHD, and GAD, but have a questions about OCD. I'm not sure if I have some OCD or am just overexcited about projects. I don't have any symptoms where I have to do the same routine over and over, but some things just stick in my mind and I can't get them out.

Here's a real-time example. Right now I have a laptop PC that won't boot corectly. It's an old piece of junk that doesn't even have a display. The used price in Ebay for one in it's condition is about $30. But I can't get it out of my head. I keep hooking it up to a monitor and use another PC to research it. I know it's not worth the trouble but I still do it. I actually get nervous and jittery thinking about what to do about it. Now this is a way for me to make the obsession go away. If I just break it so I can't be fix, all the anxiety instantly goes away. It's like a relief that I don't have to think about it any more.

I do this all the time, especially with my guitar stuff. It's my main hobby and I tend to spend more time thinking aobut how to change things rather than just be happy with what I have.

What do you think? Is this OCD or just excitability associated with my ADD?

thanks,

Al

Have you heard of Dr Amen's overfocused type of ADD? I think that's what I've got. I picked up a book about OCD which is supposed to describe a cure that's probably kind of a CBT type approach. I decided I definitely don't have OCD but maybe some similarities. Anyways I lost the book & can't tell you the name now. You can use the search feature on these forums to find more info about OCD. Try OCD book & I'm sure you will find what I'm talking about. Amen recommends Effexor (yuck) or a combination of antidepressants and ritalin which I am trying now. Zoloft is one that is recommended for OCD & it seems to be agreeing with me much better than effexor.

Supposedly I have some sort of GAD issues as well.

I take Effexor now, 150mg daily. The main thing it does is to calm my brain down. My brain would litterally feel like it was spinning around till I started the Effexor. It takes care of the speedy, panic feeling I had most of the time. Still, if there's somethig that I'm really into, the obsessive thoughts can overcome the Effexor. I'm goint to go back to the docs soon to get re-evaluated, so we'll see what happens.
