View Full Version : Happy Thanksgiving?
coolwoman 11-25-04, 10:44 AM For those of us with family who are far away, Thanksgiving is sort of a non-Holiday. Traveling for Thanksgiving AND Christmas is kind of expensive.
I am relatively new in my current location and have been busy for the past few years with work/career issues so haven't found people to celebrate holidays with. I really like where I am working, but my co-workers aren't the kind of peopoe to invite co-workers over for Thanksgiving, which is really OK with me. I am on the east coast and later I will call my daughter on the west coast where my sister is visiting. A few days ago my daughter and I had an email tiff. Yesterday we exchanged nicer emails but a nice phone call would be good.
I have found some good movies on TV. I will feel better if I clean up my house a little, dirty dishes, etc. I also could do some work I need to get done. I am happy to say that I finally got my 2003 taxes done so that is not hanging over my head.
I hope you are enjoying your Thanksgiving whether you are with others or alone. ;)
Your tone coolwoman speaks quite clearly that your heart is in a good place for a holiday based on gratitude. Happy thanksgiving to you and yours.
And to all those other Americans celebrating this comming weekend a happy thanksgiving to you.

coolwoman 11-25-04, 12:09 PM One thing I'm thankful for is DirecTV. Until the end of July I could get only one channel. I live in an area without cable and for 4 years was told I had too many trees around my house for a satellite. Finally, a man in July figured out how to hook me up to DirecTV.
I am now watching TNT "The Wool Cap" with William H. Macy. A very good movie, wonderful for Thanksgiving. He plays a mute "super" in a NYC apartment building. A tenant left her daughter, about 10 years old, with him. It appears that he may end up keeping her, since her mother has died from a drug overdose. Since he is mute, one needs to really watch it and not have it as just background noise.
There are certainly many other things I'm thankful for - good job, adult daughter who seems to be doing well, a house I really like, the company of two canine children, getting 2003 taxes done (finally!), good health, Adderall XR for my ADD, etc. :)

ODE TO A TURKEY
When I was a young turkey, new to the coop,
My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop,
Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow,
And he told me there was something that I had to know;
His look and his tone I will always remember,
When he told me of the horrors of..... Black November;
"Come about August, now listen to me,
Each day you'll get six meals instead of just three,
"And soon you'll be thick, where once you were thin,
And you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin;
"And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed,
In'll burst the farmer's wife, saying 'off with your head';
Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat,
I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,
And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked,
I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked;
I began a new diet of nuts and granola,
High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola;
And as they ate pastries, chocolates and grapes,
I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes;
I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half,
And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;
But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath,
As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death;
And sure enough when Black November rolled around,
I was the last turkey left in the entire compound;
So now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap;
I haven't a worry, so I eat and I nap;
She held me today, while sewing and humming,
And smiled at me and said
"Christmas is coming"
coolwoman 11-25-04, 02:58 PM Charlie,
Chronos is a rotweiler/golden retriever mix - a big guy. Abby is a pretty, medium-sized collie/shepherd mix. Chronos is 8 and Abby is 7. Chronos was diagnosed with diabetes in January, so I test is blood sugar a few times a day and give him insulin shots. He started going blind in March. I got Abby when she was a few weeks old - she was found abandoned near a country store by a co-worker (thus "Abby" for abandoned). My daughter and son-in-law had Chronos for his first few years, and when he and their other dog started fighting he had to come live with grandma (me).
Am now watching movie "Jack Frost" and got my kitchen cleaned up. I always feel more civilized when I get that done.
How old are your children?

coolwoman 11-25-04, 03:03 PM Charlie, that's a very nice contribution to this Thankgiving thread. I figure by not having turkey today, I've enabled one more tom to live. ;)

coolwoman 11-25-04, 03:31 PM What is malinois/GSD 6f, and is arabian 18f a horse?
Sounds like you also live out in the wild.
I live on a NC mountain. I've been told a bear lives on mountain up behind my house (has been seen by neighbors). We probably also have some mountain cats (catamounts) around. Luckily I've never seen any of these larger critters. We have many rabbits which I see frequently and which drive Abby wild.
charlie 11-25-04, 08:53 PM Malinois is sort of an European Shepherd, GSD is German SHepherd, female;)
and yes the Arabian is the horse.
