Hello,

I have some questions about ADD. I have tried to look around the net and see about getting into some discussions but there isnt alot of chat or forums online for ADD.

I think I may have ADD. I have thought about it for a few years. I have a hard time concentrating on more then one thing at a time. I leave things unfinished. I ahve not been able to even compelte games on the computer hardly at all becosue I loose interest in it to quick.

Also I misplace things all the time and forget about appointments I set. When I was in college I had a hard time in some classes like Algebra etc only becosue I could not concentrate on the teacher. I hate to read becosue I cant get past a few pages with out trying to find something else to do.

I want to go back to college but before I do I need advice. I have not been diagnosed at all yet. I had a friend stay the night at my house last night. She has ADD. She let me take one of her pills today to see if it would affect me positive at all. I only took half of it. This morning I was able to concentrate alot better. I was not hyper at all from taking the pill. In fact I was kinda tired BUT i was able to concentrate on things and also i felt I could think about 10 things or so and not get lost in thought and I never forgot anything I was trying to remember for most of the day.

The thing is I have nto been diagnosed yet but I am looking into it. The only thing that makes me wonder if I do or do not have ADD is that I am not HYPER. I can sit still quietly just fine. Its doing things or reading or trying to learn things that I cant seem to concentrate on. Can someone please help me understand what I might be experiencing? I am a extreamly inteligent person and that is the only reason I think I FORCED myself to get through school. But I lack the resolve I had when I was a teen. Please soneone reply.

Lots of people have ADD but aren't hyper. It's called "inattentive type." That's the kind I have.

It's funny you should mention not being able to concentrate on more than one thing at once. Lots of people here will say they are chronic multitaskers. I simply cannot do this, unless all but one of the things I'm trying to do/concentrate on are so familiar as to be routine. (e.g. talking on the handsfree with my cell phone and driving)

Your response to the medication indicates that you may very well benefit by consulting a psychiatrist or sympathetic GP. I'd definitely look into it if you want to use medication.

Hello,

I have taken one. It only had like 6 or so questions. If you can refer some realy good ones let me know.

Also though I dont suffer from the part that makes it so you cant sit still. I can. It doesnt bother to do so either. My problem is mainly the whole concentration and distraction part.

Could I still have ADD with out the Hyperness?

I can multi taks though... the thing is if I do I screw it up some how. I will forget about some of the tasks I am doing or parts of them or just loose the drive to finish them.

OMG I am the same way...focus on one thing and then wind up doing something else forgetting about the other....AcK and only time I really have to worry about that is when I am cooking...but ne other time i forget to turn on this or that 2 get it started cause i have already moved on to something else....It's Kinda why I have thought out a daily routine and I follow it..makes it easier sometimes to deal with

What are the sites you have been to..could be same one I am thinking.

Hi David!
I have inattentive ADD and what you describe is very familiar :)
I am not hyper, not one bit, and easily distracted, difficulty concentrating, faulty memory, I have to learn to multi-task with new stuff. I was diagnosed when I was 20. I read that inattentive ADDers typically don't get diagnosed until they are adult.
I highly suggest going to a psychiatrist, not a general practitioner/family doctor. They tend to know a lot more about ADD and meds and such.
Good luck!

This is probably the best site on the web for anything related to ADD.
We can't diagnosis you--that's a professional's job, but we can share our experiences, hopes, strengths and weaknesses, and if you are ADD you'll probably find a lot of things (and people) here that you relate to.
ADD isn't something that gets "better" like one gets better after the flu. :(
But it is something that you can learn to deal with.

For me, there were four things: First, medications that help my mind function more clearly. Second, a psychiatric diagnosis that identified exactly what the problem was (I'd been diagnosed as slightly bi-polar in 1986, clinical depression in 1991, anxiety disorder in 1996, and then ADHD in 2001. ADHD was the real issue.) Third, learning what the symptoms, etc. of ADHD were and, fourthly, developing strategies to manage or deal with the ADHD, most of which was really simple stuff.
For instance, I am going to forget where I put my keys, no matter how hard I try to remember where I put them, so every night as soon as I walk in the door I have a place where I always empty out my pockets. Then, when I need my keys, that's where they are.

i know and I am not trying to get you all to diagnose me. I just want to know if it is possible for the medication for me would make it so I wont struggle with concentrating on the professors. Do the pills do anything more then just make you feel clear minded? I need to know if they realy HELP you concentrate like you should. I have the intelligence and will to go through college but I lack the concentration. Thats my only fall back. I want to go back but it is keeping me from doing that.

htp://www.brainplace.com has an extensive 100 question test thought it's still kind of subjective. Some people feel inattentive type (non-hyper) is a different condition. I'm not hyper externally but have a lot going on in my head. I'm also not the lethargic type but I am a daydreamer. I think you also have to consider if you have emotional issues with a troubled childhoold & all that (I do) though the difficulties of living with ADD can cause some of those problems like depression & anxiety. A positive reaction to ADD meds does not mean you have ADD. At low doses most people will perform better & maybe feel more calm or confident & sharp minded.

Yeah the pills should help with concentration in school. If the problem is depression or something else though, that's not really the answer.

Heh, Dawlin, Get Dx'd first
For Me, Dexadrine helps my concentration...but what is right for me may not be right for you...that is if you are ADD. If not....They are definetly not for you. If ya are....There are sections here with info on the types of meds for adhd if ya want to start w/ research.

There are also diets, and vitamins ya can take as an alternative to medication.
