Hi,
I'm new to the board. I have add and bi-polar disorder. I'm currently taking 90 mg of adderall a day but find my self having to go up to 100 to 120 mg a day to get the same effects to keep me from being symptomatic. I'm going back to my pdoc tomorrow to ask him to increase the dosage. He is foreign and already freaked out about giving me 90 mg a day so I don't know what he's going to say. I'm really worried about not having enough medicine in a month to keep me level and don't know what to do. It's so hard to find a doc that seems to really understand ADD and willing to write a script for the amount of medicine you really need. They are all so paranoid about losing their licenses that they refuse to give you what you need and instead make you suffer on a daily basis. Any suggestions? I'm in an area and on insurance that makes finding a good pdoc almost impossible too. Help!

Carson City ....not exactly a megolopolis eh ? ........I take 90 to 100 mg of adderall a day also, and there are days ......

I can hold a a bit of hope, if you can take the straight dextroamphetimine .....there is a companie in Atlanta, who is almost ready to have their dex IR hit the market, with 7 strengths. from 2.5 mg to 30 mg tablets......

and with any luck at all, they should be correct dose per pill....the big problem with the generics is that they can differ by as much as 25% as to active ingredients......so a 10 mg pill contains 7.5 mg of the actual medication ....sucky huh ?

.....I am just holding on until they get their product out on the market ...Barr makes the only othe dex IR and only in 5 and 10 mg tablets...and they are notorious for their bad products......and inconsistant amount of the active ingredient......

...the other question is ....how long have you been seeing this doctor? ......if you have at least several months dealing with him .....your chances are better, and if youre a fairly new patient.....that's kinda chancy asking him at this point

.....there is a blog by 2 ADHD pdocs specialists for adults that talks about "Off label" prescribing ...meaning more than the "recommended" dosage ......

I don't have the link for you but google "off label use " you might have to mess around a bit to find it ...but you'll know when you see it ....I print that out for my docs......and have them put it in my records.....and unless your doctor makes a habit of handing out a lot of scripts it won't raise a red flag to the gov't ....and all he has to do if the gov't asks is say this is what this patient needs.....

....the doctor is fully free to prescribe any dosage he or she wants to once a medication is approved ......the ones that get into trouble are the one that run pill mill and hand out scrips willy nilly just for the bucks ......

....A doctor who is responsible in his craft has nothing to fear from the gov't .....they might ask, but a responsible answer will satisfy them .....this is the information on that blog .....written by those 2 docs and they also did and show a study saying that fully 1/3 of adult patients need more than the 10 to 70mg that the other 2/3 patients do ......

hope this helps .....I know exactly what you're going through and it's a bear ....

It DOES seem like a lot, and I am not surprised if your doctor seems a little leery of prescribing that much, but that doesn't mean it actually IS too much for you. People's dosage needs can vary greatly.

Is it possible to try another medication?

Wow, I can't even imagine... I'm currently taking 40mg XR a day and even that seems like a bit too much sometimes. When I was taking IR, they had me on about 30mg a day.
But with tolerance and all, I can see that being reasonable. Before I switched to Adderall, I was taking about 120mg of Ritalin a day, and even that didn't seem to be enough. My tolerance builds up so fast... such a pain -_-

Try 90mg of Dexedrine before going up to 120 of Adderall. IF your doc will prescribe it you will likely never find another doctor who will.

I agree with the first sentence. I disagree with the second. Any doctor worth his nut will do whatever it takes to help a patient. There are overcautious hacks out there, but they are the exception not the rule.

so it's back to square one .....gotta go get a phone card !

Precisely! Think of it this way, if you get adjusted to a 120mg dosage and are suddenly forced to relocate and switch doctors, are you sure the liberal and helpful will outweigh the overcautious, sure enough to risk being abruptly dropped to to half the dosage? Say bye to functionality.

Just be careful.
