View Full Version : What music motivates you when you're working out?
Just wondering what kind of music people find helps them to exercise. The gym at my college plays a lot of hip hop in the evening, and I like what they're playing but it's just not energetic for me, it's too slow, so I have to bring my own mp3 player with trance and house tracks on it. I find it helps to have the music piped directly to my brain, makes the workout go faster, makes it more exciting. I've noticed lately that they're playing a lot more house tracks from Pete Tong's Essential Mix which is always nice when my batteries run out.
Springer 12-12-04, 10:32 PM when i am on the treadmill at home i get a boost from listening to MARCHES . . . by Sousa in particular! keeps me motivated to keep up a good pace!
I love exercising to the soundtrack of "A night at the roxburry" It really pumps me up and gets me moving!
TonyTheTiger 01-10-05, 09:46 PM Hi
I find UK style Hard House just right for my power walking!!! High energy, right tempo, right level of complexity - not too tedious or distracting!
I've put a sample track here for the curious to try for size: http://www.ohalloran.co.uk/public/DarkByDesign-SeverePunishment.mp3 let me know what u think!!!

BananaSlip 03-13-05, 12:34 PM Paul Oakenfold is the best! But anything that makes me want to drive really fast works for me! Hee-hee! :)
My choice is a wide range of upbeat music...the more energetic the better...but it HAS to be loud...in my ear or blaring in the room, I need it to focus on and lose track of time.
Soul, help me
blues brother, aretha franklin and the list goes on...
_chris_ 07-31-05, 10:45 AM I always listen to trance when I work out. It helps me focus.
Uminchu 07-31-05, 11:25 AM I have a playlist named "workout":
Bring Me To Life -- Evanescence
Downfall -- TRUST Company
Drop to Zero -- TRUST Company
Sabotage -- Beastie Boys
Last Resort -- Papa Roach
Matrix Theme -- Rage Against the Machine
Testify -- Rage Against the Machine
Suck My Kiss -- Red Hot Chili Peppers
I keep it on shuffle to mix things up, and rotate a song in/out every week or so.
That's my weights music. Another one I like for working out is Wagner's Flight of the Valkyries -- smells like victory! :)
I listen to the "Now and Then" movie soundtrack... it's the perfect timming too for a nice evening walk/jog combo as I don't have a gym membership... once the music starts I just can't stop :D
Struggling 08-22-05, 09:56 PM When I do cardio...I like to listen to rock radio type of music...not pop stuff...but the kind of rock that they put on a rock radio station. When I lift weight I like stuff a little heavier.
livinginchaos 08-23-05, 12:52 AM I listen to stuff that has a bounce in it.

The bathroom scales.
A new pair of athletic shoes.
My husband telling me I feel firm.
Working out with a friend.....you keep each other accountable.
Some of my friends read while they run the treadmill.....I haven't learned that technique yet....
I always need the music to make it fun.
Gourmet 10-05-05, 08:33 PM I just realized I misread the thread...lol.
Music...this may sound funny. I listen to Madonna..."get into the groove...."
......:D....
I'm all about listening to what's around me. :D Bears are a great motivator to listening carefully!
I find the fitness results to be self motivating. Although it apparently takes a dozen weeks to establish the habit, I've got it badly. eheh and so grateful to be there!
Cheers! Ian
Keldryn 11-06-06, 03:32 PM For me, it usually has to be heavy and fast, like pre-90s Metallica or Megadeth. Sometimes I'll go for something heavy but not quite as fast, like Evanesence, Iron Maiden, Lacuna Coil, Papa Roach, etc. Which reminds me, I need to put together some good mixed metal playlists on my iPod. I can't stand the top-40 dancy hip-hoppy stuff that most fitness clubs play.
I find it almost impossible to work out if I don't have my music. It feels like it takes much, much longer. And I need heavy, energetic, stimulating music, or I get bored.
andecala 11-07-06, 07:26 PM It's Gospel for me all the way. Kirk Franklin, Natalie Wilson, Mary Mary. Inspirational and more.
sehrita 11-07-06, 09:21 PM I listen to Industrial (electronic) music. For example: Combichrist, Icon of Coil, Funker ****, Panzer AG, Wumpscut, Fischerspooner, Delerium, Terrorfakt, KMFDM, etc...
I will be very surprised if any of you even know these groups. If ya do then let me know :)

Jesse 7.0 11-08-06, 07:16 PM I love Massive Attack, Radiohead, DJ Shadow and all the music me and Yerula listen to normally and when I am not working out. However, when working out is probably when I listen to the music she doesn't like.
Music like:

Deftones
System of a Down
Rage Against the Machine

Only intense/heavy stimuliWhen I was single and still living on my own, I usually couldn't sleep without putting on some music. Usually it had to be metal or something equally stimulating. Slow, soft music wouldn't distract me enough from my thoughts and I would get bored and my mind would wander, keeping me awake. It had to be music that held my attention. My mother thought it was really weird that I would put on Metallica when I was trying to sleep, but it worked for me.

And smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary
And softly spoken lies

!YEAH!
sorry....not intended to hijack thread......but
I just saw a cool documentary about metal which really portrayed it in a different light.
It was called:
Metal: A Headbanger's Journey
Can see the trailer here (http://www.metalhistory.com/)
It was on VH1, so they'll probably be showing it again.
Here's the write up from blabbermouth.net news archive
Heavy Metal Documentary 'A Headbanger's Journey' To Hit Theaters Next Month - Jan. 18, 2006
The documentary follows Sam Dunn, a professional anthropologist, long-time heavy metal fan and practitioner through his own band, as he searches for the source of the mythology surrounding this music maligned and cursed by some, but adored by millions worldwide who cling to it like the cross itself. Over the course of his worldwide trek, he examines metal's obsession with some of life's most provocative subjects — sex, religion, violence and death — and discovers some things about the culture that even he can't defend.
Featuring legends such as Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, IRON MAIDEN's Bruce Dickinson, BLACK SABBATH's Tony Iommi, TWISTED SISTER's Dee Snider, Geddy Lee from RUSH and a host of newer, more extreme spokesmen, "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is a fast-paced blast through the genre's origins, through doom and thrash, through the saccharine hair metal phase, through the notorious black metal blight of the late '90s, right up until the metalcore revolution shaking the music industry's foundations today. Metal is louder, faster, more intrusive and more insidiously invasive today than its ever been, and "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" tells us why, for once, from the point of view of a true metalhead, an insider who lives it, breathes it, and nails the complex tale dead-on. Casual fan or ardent student of metal's million permutations, this documentary will inform relentlessly.
You can watch the trailer, find more information about the release and read the directors' blog at www.metalhistory.com.
The documentary received excellent reviews at its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and at the Stockholm International Film Festival, the Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, the Bergen International Film Festival and the Copenhagen International Film Festival. It will soon be screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
"Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is the first in-depth movie ever made on this subject.
The film is distributed in Canada by Seville Pictures. Seville International is handling international sales and has sold to it Warner in the USA, Momentum in the United Kingdom, Constantin Film in Germany, Amuse Soft Entertainment in Japan, Future Film in Scandinavia, Paradiso in Benelux and Dendy Films in Australia.
Seville Entertainment is a producer, distributor and international sales agent of quality independent feature films with offices in Montreal and Toronto. Its catalogue of Canadian rights to over 500 quality independent feature films and world rights to 90 features and docs is one of the largest in Canada. Subsidiaries include Seville Pictures Inc., Seville Productions Inc. and Malofilm Productions Inc. Seville is a private company owned and controlled by its key management and employees. FICC, the Quebec-based venture capital firm, is also a significant shareholder.
