View Full Version : Missing the ADHD co-morbidity

I wonder how much this co-morbidity is under diagnosed. As a parent, I accepted my son's AS high functioning diagnosis and put all his behaviors and problems down to the AS. Only after I was diagnosed with ADHD, did I begin to understand that my son's issues are even more complicated than I thought.

I think that I missed the added subtleties of his ADHD because I had dealt with similar problems myself and thought they were normal issues that you just had to overcome.

Given the genetic connection, there is a strong likelihood that a parent of a child with AS/ASD might have ADHD. Unlike so many parents who have realized that they have ADHD after a child's diagnosis, the main symptoms of AS may not seem to apply to the parent.

My son is now twenty six. I can only imagine how much more I could have helped him if I had known about my own ADHD earlier. I certainly appreciate his both his struggles and his accomplishments even more than I could have before.
