That's what Daniel Amen, MD states in his book: Change Your Brain, Change Your Life
I have been told by someone else that Prozac makes your memory "slippery" (i.e. work less well).
I would like to know if this is true as my short-term working memory is quite problematic. Have been taking Prozac (and Wellbutrin) and no other meds for the ADD. Tried Adderall and it was a problem since it increased my BP and had to stop. Now thinking about Ritalin.
But maybe, just maybe Prozac is causing me to have memory problems!!??
Would appreciate any thoughts or information about this issue.
TIA

Yes, Prozac definitely made my ADD worse, much worse. I have OCD/ADD combo. Prozac is probably the best SSRI for OCD, but it turned my brain into jello.
This makes sense when you understand that the SSRI's downregulate Norepinephrine and Dopamine receptors, making them less senstive to NE and DA transmitters. Zoloft is the exception because it's a modest inibitor of dopamine. But, many models place NE as the most important transmitter for reducing ADD symptoms.

Prozac shouldn't effect your memory. We ADHDers have smaller amounts of short term memory to begin with - and then our tendancy to investigate everything fills it quickly with clutter and the important stuff gets pushed out into oblivion before it can be committed to long term memory! There is nothing you can really do about that - no RAM upgrades are possible as there are no empty slots available in the brain ;-) About the only thing you can do is learn to deal with it - write everything down, use a daytimer or PDA, etc.
I don't know if Prozac is good for ADHD or not - I've never tried it myself. I'd imagine it'd help some and not others.

I was given Prozac in 1991 for "Clinical Depression"; in ~1996 the DX was changed to "Anxiety Disorder"; in 2001 I was DX'd with ADHD which I believe is the real problem.
I still continue with Prozac because it works so well for whatevertheheck it is that I have. ;)
I'd like to try some of the stimulant meds for ADHD, but haven't bothered to go hunt up a Dr who is able/willing to prescribe it.
I found that with Prozac my mental capacities were much, much better. I've tried several other SSRI-type drugs over the years, but none of them worked as well, and all caused more unpleasant side effects.
I don't mean to say that it is for any and everyone; it just works very well for me.

Prozac made a huge impact on my life, especially at first. It works like a stimulant when you first start taking it because it's the only SSRI that increases the big 3 brain chemicals (dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin) to a large extent, but after 6mo dopamine and norepinephrine drop off. Adding a stimulant to prozac sounds like a good combination.
