Can anyone tell me where Dexedrine is being prescribed? What areas of the US or Canada is it popular (or not)? I am in NYC and several providers #1 haven't heard of it lately (? what) or #2 will not prescribe it. If anyone knows anything about it in NYC, please let me know. It has worked the best for me.
I would think any MD who is properly licenced with the DEA can prescribe dexedrine. I know my psychiatrist can.
A lot of GP's won't prescribe Dex because they don't know enough about it. You may have to see a psychiatrist instead. I eventually found a GP who would prescribe it to me, who knew a lot about it, so if you don't want to have to go the Psych route you might just need to look around a little more, it's a pain I know...

They may be more familiar with Adderall, which is pretty much the same thing. I'm in Canada and Adderall isn't as available here (only the XR and it's expensive!), so I use Dexedrine (name brand as there isn't a generic here). I get the impression that there are not as many people on it either - but I'm in a small town.
In NYC I'd expect that doctors would be more familiar, but any doctor anywhere is going to be carefull about prescribing stimulants, especially if you ask for one specifically. I had to establish a relationship with my GP before he gave me stimulants - I saw him 3 or 4 times first, and I had a diagnosis from an expert who sent him a letter, etc......
I imagine it's harder to get a scrip from a doctor for "stimulants for ADHD" than it is to get any other kind of scrip, even pain killers, since a doctor can judge if you are in pain or not, while someone knowlegable enough could easily fake the symptoms of ADHD in order to get a prescription.

When I was in college, my GP suspected ADD and prescribed Dexedrine. I used it for about 6 months until I got out of college. I was in denial about ADD and I stopped taking the dexedrine. DUH. It took me 6 years to finish a 3 year degree. What did I think I had? Actually, I haven't even asked for dexedrine . I have seen 2 psychiatrists since May (I just moved back to NYC) and they both preferred Adderall for adults. I didn't ask for anything else. I did mention it at my last Psychiatrist appointment and he said he doesn't prescribe it  . Now I am seeing a nurse practitioner and we were discussing meds I had taken before. I mentioned dexedrine and she says she had never heard of it. That is why I asked.

Adderall is the dominant drug in this category, that's for sure. The power of marketing! Of course all that marketing makes the drugs more expensive, but the increased market share make it profitable for Shire (who makes Adderall) so who cares if it increases the cost of the drugs.........
If Dexedrine worked for you, then Adderall will too - they are functionally pretty much the same. There may be a generic Adderall in your area, so you aren't paying Shire's marketing expenses, so ask about that if you don't have a good drug plan.
