Hi all,

Old Ancient was prescribed Remeron about 2 months ago. For him, this drug has been amazing:D. For me, it's terrible. :( Well, not all of it.

He is so restless at night that he never stops moving at all. I mean jerking around, and moving me around in his sleep....always on the move. The dose started at 30mg, and has been put up to 45mg. No difference. He has no other side effects at all.....except he loves FOOD, and FOOD, all FOOD. This is no real problem as he is active enough to not gain too much weight.

This moving around is fine in the day, as things GET DONE..unbelievable!

But this "no sleep for me" is gave me a taste of sleep deprivation recently where I ended up hallucinating:eek: .
Has any one any ideas, experiences or anything to suggest? The med is so good, that we don't want to change it. But we also don't want me getting ill either.

No, I won't go sleep alone. :( That is not an option.

Thanking anyone who replies,
Viktoria

I just came off mirtazapine at a low dose of 15mg. It was supposed to help with my sleep at that level but it did not. I craved carbohydrates and eat like a horse. I'm active too but it was catching up with me.

It did seem to reduce my anxiety some which was good for me and it seemed to create some distance between me and some dark depressive days. Sleep became a priority and my sexual function (uncharacteristically for mirtazapine) was impeded.

Good to see you here again. I'm expecting the CD you recommended sometime this week! That took too long but all three recordings I ordered were back ordered. Pass along my regards to Ancient for me please.
Cheers! Ian.

Lower doses of mirtazipine actually make you sleepier than higher doses. This is due to the way the drug works in the brain. 15mg may well make him sleepy, while 30mg or 45mg might not. I take 30mg at night and it works great for me. The eating is another thing - Remeron does seem to make you eat - sweets in particular.
You might want to try spliting the dosage up and taking 15mg of Remeron at night to see if this helps the sleep, and take the rest of the pill in the morning - if needed for the other effects of the drug (on anxiety, depression.....). I'd talk to my doctor about it, if I were your husband.
I happen to love this drug - it has done wonders for me and I am a much happier person when taking it and there are almost no side effects for me - but it's not for everyone.
Good luck,
Greg

Ah, Ian, thank you for this reply :). Andrei was never given the chance to try the 15mg, as he was placed on 30mg from start. But last night he actually woke up just after he had kicked me. with one of the twitches...so he knows it's really bad, and I'm not blaming him at all for these side effects.

Apart from the food as you have experienced, Ancient had no problems in the sexual function area. It didn't make more than there was, as some say on Remeron, but it allowed him far less anxiety and seuxality became "normal" for him as we knew it prior to Dex which he now says he would never touch again.

I think we are all different, and we all respond to these meds different, there are just some side effects that are not pleasant. I have heard and read, that many people gain so much weight with Remeron, and I can see it has put a bit on Ancient, but he loses weight on Dex, so he's just gained what he already lost. We do know that this is one we will have to watch. He loves those carbs and sweets.

Glad your CD's are finally on their way;).....that was a long time! I'll pass a "hello" to Ancient, who is working long hrs at the moment.

Happy New Year to you and your family..:)

Good luck,
GregHi Gregster, and thank you for this info. You have come up with a great suggestion in the 15mg being taken at night. Ancient has tried taking the drug early in the day at full dose, but then the twitches are still there. Last night after he caught himself giving me a good kick lol**, he got up and took 5mg of Nitrazepam, which the Dr said was ok to take. After that, it was the best night's sleep he and I had had in a long time, and this morning he looked so much better.
He has talked and talked to the Dr, and has been given one drug after another to stop these movements, but it hasn't worked. We live in a rural city, and Dr's are not that...ummm....clued in up here:rolleyes: . He is going to speak to a pharmacist today, as I mentioned to him that I had discovered that they often know more than the Dr's do about medications.

Your idea of the 15mg at night sounds logical.

We so relate to the way you feel about this drug. Apart from this effect, it has worked marvels. Andrei says his entire thinking process is functioning differently. To me, he doesn't seem very ADHD on it.....most of the time ;) But depression is a thing of the past, so we do want to try and persevere.

Thank you for the reply Greg, and it's great to see Ancient isn't the only one who has seen benefit from this med :)

Happy New Year!

Gregster I'm grateful for your input on the mirtazapine. It was a worthy experiment. I thought I could overcome the eating thing but apparently not. In reflecting on this thread, I definitely saw some improvement in mood and anxiety. December was a banner month save for sexual function and calorie intake.

I wanted to make clear that in other places where I have benefited from your input in my interest and eventual commitment to try mirtazapine, that you have helped me. I in no way feel you have lead me places that were not useful.

Thanks for your continued support.

I've been on Mirtazipine for a couple years. My doctor told me to take it at night so I wouldn't be drowsy during the day. That has worked very well for me.

My Psych has also said that small doses are worthless. I'm on 60mg, besides the munchies I have no other side effects besides an occasional case of dry mouth. I have tried several other ADD drugs and combinations. Mirtazipine has been the best of the bunch.
