Hi,New to this subject
I am a 33 year old mother of 3
My second child will be 4 soon
And as like most children very hyper, but he goes to extremes
The child is starting pre school in the fall, and he still does not know his abc's,count to 5,or know his full name, not lack of me trying I work with him constantly,it is because the child can not sit still,or want to listen,he gets very mean at times also,
Thats where I come in,I started to do some research on my own,my doctor does not seem concerned, and I ran across add, adhd,I have heard of it,but was unsure,See my son has all the symptoms I have had as long as I could remember,to this day,my daily life is a struggle,I was always treated with anti depressants, you name it I have been on it.None ever worked,I also have OCD,I have not been able to fall asleep at nights, even as a child,I was even hospitalized as a youg child and put on lithium,my marriage is strained, and now I see it in my Precious child,I do not know what to do or where to turn,
I truly beleive my father also has the same illness,When I mentioned the symptoms to my primary care Dr.He said i is something I will out grow, when will it go away, and does my son have to live like this for the next 30 years?
I did call and try to find another Dr. before taking him there, and the secertary said all he does is ask a few ?'s to see if you are ADD,is that all they need to do,I would think maybe more testing before I am convinced, thanks much

Oh goodness, they know now adults dont grow out of ADD, but it can change what it looks like. Id see this as a red light to a doc who isnt up on the latest ADD research. I also would be VERY wary of anyone who just asks a "few questions" to find out if a child is ADD! I wish I could help more, but he needs testing from a child psycologist first or at least a specialist in ADD. Then hopefully this person could refer you to a MD for meds. He still is very young, all my kids were slow, and none are ADD, and one ended up in the gifted program! You might continue your research and give him a little time, and see how he interacts in preschool. Good luck!

Gosh, i am sorry you are having such a hard time! it definitely seems as though your doc is unenlightened....at least in terms of add. if you cannot find a specialist on your own or through a personal contact, i would suggest this: call your local school district and ask for assistance. even though your child is not in the system yet, and frankly even if he never goes there, they have access to resources that they will be able to share with you. often this is a great way to find a reputable doc. my sister even had her pre-schooler tested through the public school system for various learning disabilities and it didn't cost her a penny. i am not implying that this is a necessity in your situation, but i want to let you know that those folks are often in the best position to assist.

secondly, contact your local community services board and seek their guidance. if you look in the phone book and do not see it listed that way, go to the local government section and look under mental health. they, too, have valuable tools in most cases to help in finding a provider, or at least pointing you in that direction.

as far as your child's current "academic" ability, i think you may be putting too much pressure on yourself. i have 4 kids and like moonlily's, none of them showed such early signs of achievement. try to relax about the counting and abc's! I WOULD suggest, however, that you get YOURSELF to someone who can truly evaluate YOUR symptoms. refer to the community services board for that, as well, if you do not know anyone. i think it would be highly beneficial to both you and your son if you could find relief from these symptoms that are obviously diminishing your capacity to live your life to the fullest. many of us here have been diagnosed with add in our 30s or beyond. if that is truly what you have, you are definitely not alone. Best of luck to you.
