View Full Version : Can I not drink coffee with Adderall XR?

chameleon

I've heard mention in posts that coffee effects med's effectiveness. I don't know if that means it makes them MORE effective or LESS!
I am on Adderall XL and I drink coffee all day and night. I can't give up coffee!
The caffeine in coffee would increase the stimulant effect of Adderall XR, right? right? SAY IT'S RIGHT!!!!
Pleeeeease! Tell me coffee isn't making my Adderall not work!
I can give up food. I can give up my kids. But I can't give up coffee!!!

SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!

I'll patiently await answers to this thread.....
NOT! HURRY UP AND ANSWER!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!!

It doesn't seem to effect the adderall with me. It may however contribute to anxiousness and possibly irritability. I did make sure my doc was aware of both my caffeine intake and my smoking (you never know what will interact with what), and the pharmacist as well and niether had any problem with my normal routines in that department.

Having said that, and noting that coffee is actually a common means of self medicating among ADDers, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ASK YOUR PHARMICIST OR DOCTOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING YOUR MEDICATION. I can't over emphasize the importance of this. These are the only people truly qualified to give you medical advice pertaining to your individual treatment plan (which is based on your collection of diagnosis's and general medical history). Don't be afraid to be assertive with them, regarding your treatment plan, but when it comes to what can be mixed with what, and what sorts of side effects might represent potentially dangerous reactions they are the only ones really qualified to make a call. Your pharmacist or doctor is only a phone call away.

So basically you are both calling me a windbag.... :-(

And Minn dear, I knew very well what Susan wanted to hear, but that doesn't mean it's what she NEEDED to hear. Maybe I'm more cautious with her because I am well aware of what life without her is like...

If it makes you feel better Susan, I take 30MG in the morning, and 30 at night, and I drink coffee like it's going out of style. I still think you should ask. I can't make you, but I worry. Please take pity on me?

01-21-05, 12:25 PM
Susan, your doc might well be fine with you drinking coffee, switching to another caffinated substance isn't an answer, it's a different question. I can see you are at least as stubborn as I am! HA!

Man, am I gonna pay for that one..... *Runs and hides*

chameleon
01-21-05, 12:40 PM
My dearest E-boy,

I am afraid that if I mention it to my doc she will snatch away my meds. It's happened before, remember the mess w/ Dr. Larson when I asked for more welbutrin to alleviate a symptom? I don't want to tell my doc anything that i don't have to. I am willing to switch to tea. It's hard for me because i've been drinking coffee for so many years, that's why i'm so stubborn about it, i'm afraid to give it up. It's been part of my life for almost all my life.
But, no, I'm not NEAR as stubborn as you. On the stubborn scale you rate Grumpy Mule and I rate Cuddly Bunny

E-boy
01-21-05, 01:23 PM
Susan,

Your old doc was a complete quack. You can't base your judgements on him. If you don't cooperate and communicate with your health care providers you can't expect treatment to work. PATIENCE!

Cuddly bunny my butt! Cuddly for sure, but cuddly bunny? You do trust me don't you Susan? Please call your doc. I promise things will work out.

I want to hear the same thing E-girl wants to hear...girls can only give up so many things, and when it comes to caffeine, well...that would just be too hard to bear!

But if it really does affect the meds/and our brain negatively...*sigh*...I guess we might as well know....

So I'm REALLY glad our pal E-girl will be the guinea pig...er...cuddly bunny...who finds out for us!

Rah! Go! E! Girl!

LOL Stuck! I'm going to continue to fight this until I find a doc that says it's GOOD to drink AS MUCH COFFEE AS POSSIBLE with meds! LOL
Now I'm off to search the streets for a 'doctor' that will write such a thing down on paper for me for five bucks!

E-girl, I only started taking Adderall yesterday so can't speak to it, but if I drank caffeine while taking Ritalin, I was practically crawling out of my skin, very jittery so I stopped taking caffeine until late afternoon or evening when the Ritalin had worn off, quite the reverse of most other people. I think it would probably affect each individual differently but it will not make the Adderall not work, it might intensify the side-effects without gaining any additional benefits. Monitoring your pulse is probably a good indicator if you have too much stimulant in your system. Take your pulse at rest when you have no medication and then again with Adderall and caffeine and see what the difference is.... just a thought.

chameleon
01-21-05, 04:32 PM
good idea mil! I'll do that! I have a blood pressure cuff so I can even do that.
I don't feel jittery at all with drinking all the coffee. I think the guys just want to take away the only enjoyable things I have left....:( I think they're out to torture me. I'm not even gonna TELL them I eat chocolate! They'll say it makes you're head explode on Adderall!

if you've been drinking coffee ALL THIS TIME, your body actually will not be able to FUNCTION without said coffee!!!:(

FOREVER THEREAFTER, poor Dan will wander aimlessly about, making little use of his wonderful qualities, and.....the worst part of all, HIS 13 BUTTON PANTS!!!;)

Errr....do you consider at least 9 or 10 cups a lot? Actually, my mug is bigger than a cup.. but HEY! WAIT! You have to think about this! I've been drinking coffee like this for a long time! My body is use to it! It's probably the glue that holds my body together! I don't think 10 mugs of coffee a day is a lot. I'm a sipper anyway....like you can't get drunk on beer if you sip it, ya know? Speaking of which - it's a lot better than if I drank 10 beers a day! Or 10 Long Island Iced Teas! Why there's a lot of things I could do 10 times a day that would be MUCH worse than drinking coffee! I could bite someone 10 times a day!! I could....pick my nose 10 times a day!!! I could..... well YOU think about it! It could be so much worse! Why I think I'm SAVING myself by drinking coffee! Lord knows what else I'd be doing instead!!

Susan, (im susan too) I can only drink a little coffee on adderral, and it intensifies its negative effects like palipitations and insomnia but it also takes away the craving. are you on high enough dose of adderral? It seems like your self medicating also. Maybe your not as addicted as you think. Go off coffee, take a Tylenol, you'll feel better in 2 days. Try me, I dont miss it!

free2bme,

Well now let's not get silly here...

If you'd really like to be just like me though - 'cause I think it would be cool to be someone's idol! and you can be my minion! - all you have to do is:

1. Run screaming like a madwoman with your hand over your mouth when you see a moth.
2. Have 2 modes - depressed and extremely annoyingly chatty and pestery (that's my not depressed mode).
3. Put off everything you're supposed to do until it's too late too do it.
4. Brush your teeth 8 times a day at least, for about 5 minutes each time. To ensure you're doing this ritual properly, your brush bristles should be flat within 2 weeks.
5. Trip a lot.
6. Pretend you understand when you really don't after someone's 3rd attempt at explaining it to you.
7. Finally - and MOST importantly! - wear your jammies and fuzzy slippers all day long. Even while driving your children to school.

TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE!

My doctor said I "might" not be able to do coffee anymore - but it affects everyone differently.

Personally, I've had sort of an aversion to caffeine since starting Adderall. Given the stimulant effects of the drug, I'm respecting this as my body's way of telling me what's up. I have had tea and soda, but only half a cup of coffee once since starting. I didn't have any problems, but I definitely don't crave coffee like I used to.

chameleon
01-25-05, 03:03 PM
vaga,

Wow, I drink more coffee than ever since starting Adderall, but then it's not helping me much yet. I think I need my dosage increased more.
But I'm glad to hear that your doc only told you that you 'might' have to give up coffee! that means it's not a definite no-no if I'm doing ok on it :D Thanks!

I've been on Adderall about three weeks, and I absolutely cannot drink coffee WITH the Adderall. I can space them an hour or two.

If I do, I don't get all jittery or spaz out - I get a little bit "stoned" in fact. It kills any motivation I have during the day and gives me this warm, fuzzy, self-satisfied feeling. It feels like having a few beers.

I don't know how two "ups" add up to a "down," but there it is.

chameleon
01-28-05, 06:47 PM
Aaron,
I've heard that coffee has the opposite effect on ADDers - it's a downer for us, makes us sleepy. And it always has for me. I drink it all the way up to bedtime. It helps me sleep.

E-boy
01-28-05, 11:09 PM
E-girl,

Not all ADDers experience coffee as a "downer". Most don't. It simply doesn't always interfere with sleep, or make many of us jumpy, which isn't the same thing as being a downer. People hear the term "paradoxal reaction" and automatically assume, "opposite" but the term is applied to many reactions involving insensitivity, or different reaction to medications. Many ADDers cannot tolerate coffee on their meds, or even off of them. We are all different in our reactions to medications, and in what drugs, foods, etc. we are sensitive to.

Coffee doesn't bother me, but clearly it does bother others. Best bet is just to rely on your doctor's guidance and your own experience.

Lucid
01-29-05, 07:48 PM
I have a very strong reaction to coffee when on Adderall. Caffeine is almost like a catalyst. A little helps boost the effectiveness of the Adderall, but drink too much and I'm wired. Since taking Adderall, I've had to cut my caffeine by 75%. In the morning, I take a 50/50 blend of decaf and regular. After that, its decaf or maybe a little 50/50. I have to be really be careful or I will get get wired, or worse, nauseaus.

Zippy
02-02-05, 05:50 AM
Coffee absolutely knocks me for a loop. I love the way it tastes and smells however. I just never got into the coffee habit. I think that caffeine is a drug that probably should be more regulated. Of course, I may be hyper-sensitive to it's stimulant properties. I crave diet Cokes. First of all, those who've never been to Texas should know we call EVERYTHING in the soda/soft drink category a Coke. That said, I like Diet Pepsi much better than Diet Coke as it doesn't wig me out nearly as bad. I've not researched the two, but I'll bet there's more caffeine in the Diet Coke.

Anyway, I've found that caffeine can unleash, and usually compounds "brain fog" in me personally. But, I drink it anyway like an idiot.

I may need a twelve step program for Diet Sodas !!!!

Sorry, I just love typing that! LOL :D

It makes me think of an oldie's radio station! :)

Anyway, to answer your question.

It depends on what medications you are taking.

I have always drank caffeine regardless of my ADD medications and haven't ever noticed a difference in effectiveness.

However, I know you aren't suppose to drink orange juice with Adderall!

But, I don't know about all the other stimulants and orange juice!

Peace! :)
