View Full Version : Milk??? A problem for Adults with ADD?
hollyanne 01-26-05, 01:26 AM Hey,
Ive heard that people with ADD shouldn't drink milk because of the high sugar amount that is in milk and that enzyme speeds up the brain, anyone else heard of this too??
wheresmykeys 01-26-05, 11:55 AM LOOL oh that would suck! I've been an avid milk drinker since I was a kid..
Gregster 01-26-05, 05:10 PM Haven't heard of this - don't know of any evidence that milk products make ADHD worse. Lots of people are lactose (milk sugar) intollerant, which means they have less of the enzyme lactase to break down the milk sugar. This can cause gastro-intestinal problems, gas, bloating, etc. There is a simple test for this if you suspect you've problems digesting milk.
fasttalkingmom 01-26-05, 05:17 PM I have never been able to drink alot of milk and only able to drink skim... It hurts my tummy and makes me feel very grouchy. Dr. says I have an allergy
Scattered 01-26-05, 05:21 PM The ADD Nutrition diet suggests dropping milk and milk products and seeing if there is an improvement. For me there was. Went to a friends house the other day and ate a lot of pizza and paid for it the next day. Going to ask my doctor about it tomorrow.

Gregster 01-26-05, 05:28 PM Most adults don't really need to drink much milk. I thought that I was lactose intollerant and didn't drink much milk for that reason, but I was tested later and I can digest it just fine. If you are worried about lactose but still want to get calcium from milk products, you can eat yougurt or drink milk with lactase added - or you can even take lactase pills that give you the enzyme to digest milk properly if you want to eat Pizza with double cheese!
I used to be a milk addict untill I discovered THAT'S what been giving me all these stomach aches..
I have no idea whether it's ADHD specific, but I've been avoiding milk (except for hot chocolate, hey... a girl has her limits! can't give up hot chocolate!) in the past few months and feeling physically better.
I'm really turned off milk. My youngest who is just like her Papa and has clear signs of ADHD loves the stuff. I did too when I was her age. She likes to drink it the same way she likes to drink all other sweet drinks. She's a sugar hound like me and will go out of her way to manipulate her way into more sweet. We don't make a war out of it but milk has the same draw for her that coke has as far as sweet cravings.
I've cut way back on my sugar intake and as a consequence I'm much more level mood wise. I think this helps me.
In my mind it's just another "drink" and isn't particularly good for me on a number of levels. The web is full of information regarding troubles with milk.
I have lived in a rural agricultural area with lots of dairy farms for nearly twenty years and I'm just as happy to not be drinking the stuff after learning about some of the common practises in handling milk. But that cautionary stance of mine spans the whole range of foods raised by intensive farming methods.
It's still controversial to suggest that milk with it's squeaky clean image might not be the perfect food, but I think it's down side will get more attention as time goes on. I'm not a fan of milk at all after seeing the changes at home when we dropped it for about two years.
We had a situation where one of our kids had chronic ear infections that antibiotics finally failed to address. Surgery was next on the list and the arrangements were being made when I found some suggestions indicating that eliminating milk worked to fix this common problem for many.
Low and behold dumping the milk fixed the problem. This was years ago and now we tell the kids to drink milk when they have a craving and they do periodically. Four out of five in this house just naturally migrated away from milk and we've all been healthier for it.
I've become very sceptical of milk as a food. There are plenty of better ways to get protein and calcium. Good for some maybe, but certainly not good for all.
Cheers! Ian
moonlily 01-27-05, 10:56 AM Its interesting when you think that we, as adults are not meant to drink milk! All mammals are designed for species-specific milk untill brain development is finished. (about 1 year or 3x birthweight in humans) When you think we drink milk made for baby calfs every day its kinda weird huh? It might me the biggest marketing scam ever in history! Our calcium comes from other places also, the milk industry just doesnt want us to know that. Hmmmmmmmm.......
stressedintn 01-29-05, 09:17 PM Yeah I too have pushed away from the milk more lately. Lately i've started drinking V8 and it seems to be benefitting me.
I can hardly drink the V8 for the salt! An hour later and I'm parched.
I'm drinking more green tea and water. My wife got hooked on green tea and now I've gone that route.
stessedintn.. "A Free Thinking American".. whoa.. that's dang attractive! You can stay! heheheh
(all those freaking out please pardon my wacked sense of humour)

mustFocus 02-01-05, 03:29 PM Interesting. I had a severe milk allergy as a child and just naturally avoid it. I, too, am convinced that milk is not nutritionally needed in humans once past infancy. Cow milk, in particular, has a protien that is very hard for humans to deal with. I've never broken a bone, either.
Forget my name! 02-04-05, 07:33 AM I readed a book about add and yes,Milk isnt good!
I recommend multivitamin drinks!
ive heard that too from somewhere--mostly i avoid milk & try to stay away from cheese ( but ooohhhhhh!!!-for a good strong smelly cheese-slobber drool & etc...) because lactose intolerence. but dont take my ice cream away from me & side effects be danged.
good thing im usually alone when i work :o
intresting point tho--i always thought it was the sugar in the ice cream (that too) that set my committee all a chatter but now that i think about it, milksugar would do it too.
Prairiewind 02-05-05, 02:08 PM But is it the lactose only that makes milk a problem for ADDers? It seems to me that all forms of sugar should be avoided. Has anyone seen any studies conducted?
auntchris 02-07-05, 01:29 AM I have change to organic skim milk and also drink the soy milk by silk...I feel better than jus reg. ,milk. auntchris

SonnetCelestial 02-08-05, 01:20 PM I know there are advocates who claim that milk is evil, but honestly I adore it. I knowingly tell myself, "if no milk is the cureall of all that is evil with ADD, I still willl drink milk because I am determined to manage my own add".
Oh and the important detail is that I love dairy and am a complete cheese-a-holic ++. :) I do'nt feel I'm screwed if milk = ADD+++ symptoms. ADD comes with good symptoms as well.
Coffee, on the other hand, makes me feel very hyper and clear headed (i'm usually a sleepy sloth). However I cannot ever like the taste. To me it's about the same as drinking petrol...not that I've ever drank that mind you but I have a vivid imagination! ;) Don't we all?
