CAr songs ......are they just a product of the 60s ?

got any favorites ??

my first car was a muscle car, a 65 olds cutlass......400 cubic inch engine ....that car was FAST ......if you hit passing gear, ( a button under the accelerator, push the pedal all the way to the floor)..the back end would dig in, the front end would raise up....and it would take off like a a scalded cat ....

trouble would arise when you wanted to turn the car.....cornered like a hippo in a mud bank ....

then again you weren't supposed to turn a muscle car...... they were built to go very fast in a straight line .....

a classic ......

hey I drove my parents' old '69 oldsmobile cutlass (light green) for 2 years.
I loved that car! very tiny girl in huge vehicle.
the music was, "whatever was on the classic rock station", mostly.

In the morning I like to listen to something fast and heavy (unless I'm depressed). In the evening, I usually listen to something mushy like Three Doors Down. My favourite song (for a year now ):

and I meant .....songs about cars, .....but then again, I don't suppose people write songs about modern cars ......they lack the style and ....well style .....of those old 60s cars.....

Car songs in the last decade have mostly been rap music. Not something I
enjoy listening to, so I won't be sharing any of those.

I think what is notable is that driving has continued to be a passionate aspect of our culture... but we've fallen out of love with the specific vehicle that we drive. They just don't inspire the same feeling anymore.

Just look at Salleh's OP

my first car was a muscle car, a 65 olds cutlass......400 cubic inch engine ....that car was FAST ......if you hit passing gear, ( a button under the accelerator, push the pedal all the way to the floor)..the back end would dig in, the front end would raise up....and it would take off like a a scalded cat ....

My first car was a family car, an 88 toy-ota camry........ 2.0 cubic cm engine (4 cylinder and no user modifiable parts).... that car was FUEL_EFFICIENT..... if you hit over-drive, (a button on the shifter-bob that made a little light turn on the dashboard and dropped to 4th gear), the back end of my head would raise up while I yawned..... and it would take off like an overfed cat (so long as I was going down hill).

I miss my moms grand marque, boy I had a few hair raising near misses w that car.A few times I went around a corner it either looked like the way they drove the cars in them mob movie chases or I had the rear hanging out.A few times I 180'd it good thing I never hit anything or anybody.Damn I miss that car.I now have a mr 2 which handles like a go cart or porsche but theres nothing like the raw power of a v8:D

In the summer of 1987, I sped across the country in my 1983 Chevy Monte Carlo... It had a V-8, of course, aluminum mag wheels, and a moon roof that was also a T-roof. I drove the whole distance from California to Pennsylvania by myself, and most of the way was pretty crappy for radio stations, so I listened to my cassette tape of The Cars' Greatest Hits over and over and over and over...

To this day, the song "Drive" evokes images of wide-open Utah hills, red clay roads in Wyoming and Montana, the flats of South Dakota, and then finally the beautiful, picturesque, winding roads from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia...

Heh heh. I loved that car, but it was a magnet for thieves. Poor thing got stolen three times: once outside Chicago, once from my college town outside Philadelphia, and once in NYC, before it finally disappeared for good. :(

Anyway, so this song IS driving, to me.

I loved that cutlass.....people would get out of my way like a breaking wave as I sped up the fast lane of the freeway ......

.....I used to date a guy my freshman year just cause he had not 1 but 2, count 'em 2 ! Lotus Europas ....those cars were so low, you'd sit in one and look up at aTriumph ! ...but they could do 75 on a freeway cloverleaf onramp ....and they stayed tight and level to the pavement ....whoosh !......

...... Just now looked them up to get a photo, and found out those suckers were 42 inches tall ! ...and they were designed to handle like a forumla 1 car, so handling and cornering was one of the design perameters .....

.....no wonder i loved how those suckers cornered ..!!

....Oh and Drew ...that song with the cartoon of a road and 2 cars ....that black Mercedes on the left .....that was my second favorite car ....I drove one just like that for many years .....a 1964 mercedes 190C .. a 4 cylinder, 5 speed on the column, big black box that lumbered along the road between Sonoma and the city ,......the steering wheel was about as wide as my shoulders.....

...One motored in that car ...you didn't drive it .....before I had the engine rebuiltl, snails would race by me sneering as they left me struggling up the Waldo grade ( that big city on the far side of the Golden Gate bridge .....very steep .....)

...if someone pulled out in front of me I would curse them soundly, cause it would take a good 1/.2 mile to get back up to speed .....

but it was a tank ...and I was safew as houses in it !

....There was another car that I lusted after ....check it out, this car was designed in 1961, the first one rolled off the line in 1963, but the Studebaker Company crashed and burned in 1964....so less than 5,000 of these cars were made ...

...This car was made about 5 years earlier than the Lotus......

...Lots of them have survived cause the body was fiberglass....

....but this car, in street version, was very light, and had a V-8 engine ....and could do 186 MPH .....a street car ! ....

....what amazes me is how modern this car looks .....we look at from 2013 and it does look a bit dated .....but still has a certain amount of future styling left in it .....

Car songs for me are more of what was in the tape deck or on the radio, when I was rolling across the countryside. Used to get off work and just head for the border, when the radio faded, pop in an 8 track or cassette. This is one of the best songs for running at night, clouds gathering, shadows deepening, steady thrum of the tires, exhaust note strengthening as you feed in more throttle to pull a grade:

Driving to Reno, early 70's, always seems I am making the long runs after dark, lovely wife is sleeping with her head in my lap, stretched out across the huge bench front seat of a Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 - (Awesome overkill, just feathering the throttle at 80mph) 8 track holds James Gang Rides Again, and every time this song comes on, Tend My Garden, I have to feed in more power.
