Anybody else who can't find their way out of a paper bag. I was wondering if it is an ADD or ADHD trait. I can't find a place I've just been frequently. I used to have a job driving to different schools. I usually had detailed directions on how to find the school and managed to get there, but when it was time to leave I couldn't remember how to get out again and I couldn't reverse the directions in my head. Always got real confused, although it seems like change a left to a right should be easy -- not for me!

Getting lost- thats me 100%. I used to sell real estate but for the life of me I don't know how I ever did it. I recently moved and I have gotten so frustrated with driving. I consider it a real handicap because it limits me in what I can do. I don't know how to fix it either because I even have problems with maps. ugh!

I can't remember or reverse directions to a place I've been ......

And with my job this an be a point of panic for me some times..... :D

I've got much better with direction due to my job I've gone many places I'd never would have tried years ago.

My one trouble is the reverse direction stuff.... I try to write down stuff as i pass the to the place I'm going so I will know how to get back.....

My husband is good at giving me direction on how to get back. It's the one thing he seems to understand about me that's cool....

I get lost no matter where I am going. Even if I havce been there before. I live about 20 min from a major city, I work in this city, I know ONE was to get there and thats it. If I get lost I am screwed!

Kind of nice to know I'm not alone in this. It's a real handicap for me not being able to find my way back to or out of places I've been numberous times. My only savior lately is MapQuest. Their printed out directions can usually get me somewhere with only a few minor screw ups -- when it comes time to get out again though:confused: . Maybe I need to print directions in and a seperate set of directions for out!;)

Garry, I understand exactly what you said about knowing exactly where I am all the time -- it's where everyone and everything else is that baffles me a bit!:p

My helping hand is my portable computer and microsft streets and trips....

As long as I can figure out where I am

The corner of " This Street " and " That Road ", once I find it on the computer , this computer draws me a map of how to get where Im trying to go.

I need to get a GPS to attach to it so I don't have to figure out where I am anymore

It looks like I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum here.
Take me some place on a dark rainy night, and 2 years later I can take you back there from the opposite direction.
My mother and I gave good sense of direction, my father and sister none at all.

Ok I think I top the lot of you.
I have seriously lived my life in a state of confusion, as I get lost everyday. I have had the same house for six years, yet I get lost going up the same road to the same store. Once, when I had been missing for hours, my parents found me sitting in the park crying.

It is so weird it's like I think: oh this road looks familiar! But then it isn't the right road, and everything starts to look the same. I don't think there are any clues to help you not get lost. I was always losing my car keys, then I attatched a green teddy bear key ring the size of a piece of toast, but STILL they get lost. It's just one of those things i guess.

I am good at directions. I might not know the exact street but I can find area very quickly.

Put me in the middle of some woods with a stick of gum and a pocket knife and I can get out no problem. MacGyver trivia sorry

I say right when I point left (so I give the wrong directions) plus I have trouble recognizing places and people, so it is really easy for me to get lost. I get things flipped around in my head, and when nothing seems familiar, it can be a little scary at times. :)

Don't be sorry -- I love MacGyver! Besides someone has to help the rest of us figure out where we are!

Strange, I thought I posted this yesterday but it's gone....hmmm....

Anyhow the long version is funny, but the short version is, well, short....so,

I know where I am as long as I don't get too far from the ocean. Ocean on right, I'm going north. Ocean on left, I'm going south. I CAN'T go east unless I'm looking to take my jeep for a swim. Therefore, I would say I have a high degree of driving incomprehension when the word "west" is involved.

I do the same thing. When I lived on the coast I could always figure out the cardinal directions if I could see the water! Of course it also elimates one direction you can even go!

If I'm going somewhere I've never been, I must allow about 30 minutes to get lost. I've gotten lost going places I've been before though.

The frustration only fuels the lack of direction, too. It's a downward spiral once you get flustered.

Once I stayed lost for so long I almost gave up and went back home! lol

ill get distracted and miss a turn. which quite a few times, missing of turns has saved my life. ill turn around and head back a few minutes later, and there is a bad accident.

if im in a new area, i can get lost if im distracted by someone talking to me or im talking to someone.

i can usually return to place even if ive been there once with out any problems. i typically remember landmarks and can see the route to the place but cant remember the street names and making a left or right. im not good with streets, lefts/rights, north/south/east/west.

i can remember how to get to places that i havent been to in several months or even years.

I rarely if ever get lost. When I go to a new town I always look for the main drag(s) and other markers. Then I hop in a car and go exploring! Within a few minutes I can get around pretty easily. San Francisco and Boston are tough but even then - you don't get so much lost as delayed.

The downside to knowing where everything is located is when I have forgotten to bring the address I needed to get to a specific place... Yeah I can get to a starbucks or a white castle... But that non-descript office building and Ste. 208? I deploy that fabulous cell phone technology and have someone give the address to me.

Is it still considered lost if you know where you are? *shrug*

I can recieve the worst directions and still get there 9 out of 10 times. However I also GIVE the world's worse directions. If I have driven there I can drive back. My mother has lived in the same house for over ten years (my grandparents lived ther before that) but don't ask me to tell you how to get there. I know 1500 ways to get there from any where on the planet, but I couldn't TELL you how to get there from accross the street!!!

This is one of my biggest problems. I can get disoriented if I sit at someone else's desk for a while. I have to stand up and look over the cube walls to reorient myself to the building I've worked in for 10 years. Large scale subdivisions with lots of similar houses completely baffle me. I always get east and west confused but, oddly enough, not north and south. I get lost in my Doc's office on a regular basis when there's no nurse to guide me *out* of the exam room back to the waiting room.

Hehe! I did that today. I was going to see the psychologist for ADD testing. I left the forms he had given me to fill out in my car. When I went back to the car to find them, I couldn't find the car! He told me I could get the questioneers after the test. Problem was that when he openned the door to let me out, I didn't remember how to get out to the parking lot (some people might have found the EXIT sign on the door helpful, but not me:o ). Anyway he pointed the way out for me, probably thinking all the time that he could have saved us both the time and bother of testing and just give me an ADD dx from my behavior at trying to meet an appointment! I hope I'm brave enough (or intrepid enough) to go back and get my official dx and suggested treatment plan next week!

My youngest was in the third grade when I took her in for testing. Before the test I was given papers to fill out and more papers for her teacher to fill out. I lost my set once had to go back to MD office get more, I gave her the ones for her teacher, big mistake!! She lost them and back to the doctors office I go. This time I ran off copies of the blank ones. It took another set before I woke up and took them to the teacher myself. The teacher was as think skulled as I was because she gave her filled out forms to the same child who lost the last two sets, not to mention dozens of home work assignments!! I took a copy set too her so she could re-fill them out this time I included a stamped envelope with the doctor's office address on it. They arrived a few days before we did. The doctor not only diagnosed my daughter with ADD he had a pretty good idea of where she inharieted!!! Apparently ADD runs rampid in his office as they now include a self addressed stamped envelope for the teacher to mail her questionare directly to them after she fills it out. They will offer the parent the same SSE, because stamps, and envelopes cost less than making all those copies. ADHD the mother of creative necessity.
