View Full Version : Funniest thing I heard all year
Nucking_Futs 02-07-05, 11:18 PM While discussing how Lexi is doing in class with her teacher today. Her teacher informed me that Lexi should be re-tested for ADD. I thought really? why do you say that? She replied that Lexi who is dx ADD inattentive isn't hyper but is rather a day dreamer...mmmmmm ya think Einstein? I can't help but chuckle everytime I think of it. She did get the correlation after I printed information from Bigs site and showed her that there are actually several types of ADD Lexi's teacher was very apologetic and very red in the face but I told her I'd rather she ask me then to think I'm just looking for excuse's.
pembroke 02-08-05, 12:02 AM madame teacher needs to update her reading....:p
free2bme 02-08-05, 12:29 AM Funny yet extremely frightening........know what I mean???
Nucking_Futs 02-08-05, 01:27 PM What's truly frightening is that is not the first time I've heard that suggestion for that very reason. I usually try to keep material on hand if the teacher reads it GREAT for them if not we are definatly going to bump heads.
ADDitives 03-28-05, 06:35 AM hmm, that IS a general perception amogn many people - that the ADD child is the child running around yelling etc, being hyperactive.
but its silly that a teacher should MENTION THIS TO A PARENT without getting some reaon information on it first.
i laughed when i read that :) but really its rather appauling
mctavish23 03-28-05, 08:56 AM At the teleconferences I listened to last Thurs. & Fri. Russell Barkley brought up something he's been working on now for several years. While I don't have my notes with me at home this morning, I am somewhat familiar with it. What he is postulating is that among the ADHD Inattentive types, there is a select subgroup comprising as much as between 30-50% of the total, that represent a "qualitatively different disorder." He has referred to this as Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (STC). Please understand that this is just an idea for a name. The research is ongoing, so you won't find it mentioned anywhere except in some of his books. What the telconference highlighted, and I'll check my notes for accuracy, was that this "type" is prone to excessive daydreaming, and lethargy. He listed quite a few more symptoms but I can't recall them right now.I will look though and then post them if you'd like.
Nucking_Futs 03-28-05, 01:12 PM Yes I would like...what I'm wondering is if you can in fact have two distinct types in one person. Lexi is exactly what you describe to a T. Now me for instance you described my mind and constant state of lethargy but my body doesn't stand still. I believe my doc called it "stimming" I cross and un cross my legs, touch my fingers tips to each other or roll my pencil around in my hands when I have to sit still for long periods of time and pay attention.
mctavish23 03-28-05, 02:16 PM Self-stimming or self-stimulation is what he was talking about. You start splitting hairs as tho what behaviors are hyperactivity and which one's might be related to a sensory problem. With the latter, the purpose of the movement(s) would be to help find a "balance," so to speak. My opinion is that the hyperactive behaviors serve the same purpose anyway.
I'm leaving this afternoon to travel to the workshop and don't have a lot of time but here's some of the notes on SCT. Remember that SCT isn't an official "anything". It's just an idea for a name. Here's what he said:
There may be a subset within the Inattentive type that may be a "qualitatively different" disorder;comprising between 30-50% of the Inattentive types diagnosed.
The common presenting symptoms were :1) daydreaming, spacey, stares ;2)hypoactive,sluggish (opposite of hyper ); 3) easily confused, mentally "foggy;" 4)slow, error proned information processing; 5) poor focused or selective attention ( Selective attention is one of the 6 kinds of attention defined by neuropsychology and is an "input" function of the brain.ADHD (hyperactive-impulsive & combined types only) disrupts the one "output" function of Persistence); 6)erratic retrieval of long term memory and 7) socially reticent (shy) and withdrawn.:)
witsend 03-28-05, 03:51 PM Futs,
I'm that way too. I think of it as our body has "learned" to "control" unacceptable behavior. Have you ever seen an adult jumping on the couch, or doing many of the other things kids can do, and get away with, to "burn off some energy"?
If I have a piece of peper in my hand, no mattere what it is or how important it is, I'll fold & re-fold it to the smallest possible size. Then I'll open it & fold it again!!
Nucking_Futs 03-28-05, 04:39 PM Futs,
Have you ever seen an adult jumping on the couch, or doing many of the other things kids can do,
lmbo ummm you've never seen my family together have you? Ok short description 4 kids, 2 halfs, 4 adopted and that is just my mother's and adopted father's children.
All of us have one form or another of ADD/ADHD....We are also very competitive and don't like to lose...I'll one up ya, best two out of three, best four out of seven...you getting the picture? Now add in our own children who do their very best to emulate us.
Yesterday, there were 4 of us kids and 15 grandkids at my sister's house we started playing my new game Scene It...its a hoot!!!! Anyway long story short yes, yes I have seen an adult jumping on the couch, I've seen an adult take his brother into a headlock so he could answer the question first, I've seen an adult threaten another adult with a swirly if he didn't stop cheating *blushes*....Wanna come play at my house? *laughs hysterically*
witsend 03-28-05, 04:48 PM I would LOVE to be in your family!!!! My fam is so boring. all we did is talk about mundane things ..no games...no laughing...i swear it's not my REAL family. :l
We did however return a dog to it's yard only to find out it's owners have left FOR 2 WEEKS!! NO food/water!! I checked on her this morning & brought her food & then called animal control, they're coming later to get her.

 We don't have animal control in our community so I called the cops and they couldn't do anything...so I basically told him watch and learn...walked up and stole the dog in front of the owners, nobody ever said a word lol and we got the best little love hound you've ever seen out of the deal.
Fun!!!! Can never have enough adopted kids around...we're getting together all 10 of us our kids and mom and dad at my sis's house again for Easter and of course a re-match!!! :D
witsend 03-28-05, 05:05 PM I'd love to keep her, but the neighbor said she does't get along w/ other dogs & I've got 2 , plus 3 cats . So it's out of the quest.
I was adopted, by my dad (mom's real), Funny thing is my dad & I are more alike personality wise than my mom & I are!!
ADDitives 03-29-05, 06:53 AM i know that im both hyperactive an inattentive, but the thing is i'm ALL of all the bits described in this thread, and none of all of them (make sense..?????)
i'm slow moving AND fast moving, i know that my 'stimming' is both to do with hyperactivity, lack of stimulation, AND sensory problems (and something else...). my brain is fast AND slow at different times, and sometimes it stops completely. its just a big tangly dynamic ball of wool which has many colours, textures, thicknesses, knots, loops, straight and pokey bits, and bits twirling and whirling around each other - and if you know about tangles, you know that the more you pull at it, the tighter the knots get.
