View Full Version : Sleeping Aid Prescribed
spbizzy 02-08-05, 04:05 PM I was having trouble sleeping so my Doc put me on Trazodone 100mg at bedtime.
I know it's for depression/Anxiety and I don't have none of that but my doc said that Trazodone is "NOT" addictive and it will help me go to sleep since it also helps people go to sleep.
So here's the question...
Is there anyone else taking it besides me?
P.S. by the way...I slept like a baby :)
Gregster 02-08-05, 05:55 PM I think lots of people take this for the same reason as you do
livinginchaos 02-08-05, 10:50 PM I take trazedone, but only when I get bouts of insomnia. It works like a charm!
It has really helped me stay sane and get my sleeping back on track when the insomnia starts up.
I'm glad it helps you too, spbizzy :)
spbizzy 02-10-05, 02:57 PM Here's an update:
Trazodone started to take the reverse affect on me the 2nd day. I started feeling depressed and sad. I do get sad once in a blue moon but depressed...hell no. I'm a natural happy person and it felt very weird.
So I stopped taking it and now my doc put me on Ambien.
And all I have to say is WOW....just wow.
Ambien is just great and I know its highly addictive but I can't sleep for crap. So if you guys have difficulty sleeping, ask ur doc for Ambien. Well maybe not if you have an addictive personaly like me but still it helps.
by the way...I slept like tired cozy baby :p
livinginchaos 02-10-05, 11:47 PM that's interesting - - because Trazedone is often prescribed for people who are depressed. . . ..
At least you were able to get a different med!
How long were you on Trazedone? just the 2 nights?
KnittingJunkie 02-11-05, 02:26 AM Trazodone? I thought it was a tranq! What?
Now, Ambien, that's some goooood sh*t. But dad doesn't get me samples of it. Says he can't find them, they don't give them out, I'll have to deal with Xanax.
(Have a huge bruise on my thigh, and another on my hip, by the way, because the other night I took a mg and a half, and just felt weird all of a sudden, stumbling and swaying like I was drunk. Tripped over my kid's tricycle. Wasn't pretty.

I wish I knew how many people here take xanax or some type of tranquilizer to take the edge off their ADD meds .... anyone want to talk about that
Gregster 02-11-05, 10:16 AM A lot of people with ADD/ADHD have problems with anxiety and insomnia, a reputable doctor would not prescribe a sleep aid simply to "take the edge off" of a stimulant - at least not long term.
Gregster... my anxiety and insomnia were caused by the ADD medication and that is why so many are on benzos ... to help with the anxiety and insomnia that the meds cause ..... if anyone here is on that combo please post so I can see if this combo causes anyone else problems .... For me it it did and irreversible damage happened by the time I questioned the Dr.'s about all the drugs they kept prescribing me to keep me coming back .
I do not mean to make waves here or post things to upset anyone I just feel like I need to warn people about what happened to me and find out if anyone else is taking this combination and how they feel ..... thanks......
skagitgirl 02-11-05, 07:28 PM I just started back up on Adderall this week (30mg). I was only on Adderall for 1.5wks before stopping because of the insomnia and wired feeling. So I haven't been on Adderall XR too long but the insomnia is bad.
Last week I started Ambien but my 5th day into it I had bad hallucinations from it. I researched Ambien on the internet and found a lot of scary things about this sleeping aid. A common side effect are hallucinations and memory loss. Neither of which I am willing suffer from. Some ppl like hallucinations, but from my research,.. ppl were jeopardizing their safety on this stuff as a result from the hallucinations and then not remember doing it. Anyone considering using Ambien, I would research it a little on the internet from ppl who use and have used it. It works similar to LSD / Mushrooms.
I was switched to Trazadone (50mgs). I did fall asleep but woke up in the middle of the night and had to take another one to go back to sleep. I also woke up with a headache and congestion. These are also common side effects.
Melatonin does not work for me. But I will be trying Valerian.
Just wanted to share my experience.
livinginchaos 02-11-05, 08:02 PM When I first started taking Trazedone, I'd wake up with a headache. Although I don't take it on a regular basis, I haven't gotten headaches from it in the past year (been taking it for about 3 years - once or twice a month).
My doc told me that Trazedone is typically used to help treat people with depression, but more often used to help people sleep.

Yeah, just two nights.
Ambien is nice but I can see it's addicting. I'm thinking about buying this herbal sleep aid called "Somnatrol". Supposely it works great and is not addictive. here's the website: Edited by Moderator
livinginchaos 02-15-05, 10:29 PM I have a friend who swears by Melatonin.

No, but I've had Xanax waaayyy before I started on the stimulants for insomnia (well, and anxiety, but that's from way back when.)
And I'm on Klonopin, mee, which is a benzo, but wasn't prescribed for anxiety--rather, for epilepsy. (You know, it's one of those combo drugs--works for different problems.) It's ok...I was messed up before, brain damage--I'm used to irreversible damage, and besides, dad (doctor) always knows my meds, and didn't have a problem, so it's all good.

cualexander 02-16-05, 02:51 AM I'm on a combination of Xanax bars and Adderall XR 25s. I find that if I take an Adderall and a quarter of a Xanax bar, then it sort of balances everything out and I'm "happily productive" as I like to say. If I don't take my Xanax I just have really bad anxiety and insomnia. The way I see it, the Xanax brings me back somewhere to the middle of things, instead of too high or too low. The only problem is that I'm kinda worried about the effects of taking a benzo long term. My doctor prescribed me 2 bars a day. I rarely take a half of a bar a day, and most of the time just a quarter. No one believes me when I tell them that Xanax is a powerful powerful drug. Its also great though. The only problem is that if I forget to take it, I'll have really bad insomnia and if I take it too late, I will sleep straight through all of my alarms. Its really bad in that sense. I am kind of dependent on it these days. For instance, I didn't take it today, just the adderall, and everything was fine, but then at night I started crashing really bad and then I couldn't sleep at all. Its almost 3am and I'm afraid of oversleeping if I take one now, but I really need sleep since I work 13 hour days at the office these days.

This was a combination that really got in the way of finding the right ADHD medication and dosage for me to say the least . Adderall was so helpful for my ADHD but gave me really bad anxiety and insomnia , when I got up to around 40 mg a day . My Dr. started to give me small amounts of Xanax for this problem and that was the wrong reason to prescribe a benzo. Benzodiazepines are no to be taken for long periods of times becuase of their addictive nature and this is well documented . It sounds to me you are taking the Xanax to counteract the side effects of the Adderall . When you say you are kind of dependent on it these days you need to really be careful . It sounds like you are becoming addicted to it and Benzodiazepine withdrawals are extremely difficult to say the least . If you are trying to really get your ADHD medication right as for as the right dosage etc the Xanax is going to get in the way . If you can not take Adderall unless you have the benzo to supplement it I suggest you rethink your ADHD approach . Also you said that your Dr doctor prescribed you 2 bars a day on top of your Adderall ( that is 4 mg of xanax a day ! ) you need to see another Dr. for a second opinion . I see many here taking stimulants for ADHD and they seem to have no problem when they get the drug and the dosage right . I know now that being prescribed a benzo and a stimulant at the same time got in the way of me getting the right ADHD drug and dosage .
I am begining to think that there are Dr's out there that prescribe certain drugs for ADHD and rather than retinking the ADHD drug and dosage when the person complains of anxiety and insomnia they simply start them on a benzo .
http://www.benzo.org.uk/ this place is a wealth of information on benzos and has a great forum you can sigh up for .

You may be right about this Mee. I see a lot of posts where people are put immediately on long acting stimulants (like skagitgirl). I suspect the drug companies influence this activity, because many of the long-acting meds are still under patent and costly. So the docs then prescribe sleep aids when the long-actors act long.
For me:
(Insomnia + stimulent) OR (depression + stimulent) OR (too much stimulent)= anxiety
I can't take benzos because I have a history of abusing that sort of drug. My doc gave me Paxil for depression and insomnia, which did knock me out at night, but did nothing for my depression (the stimulents helped much more for depression because they alleviated many of the casuses). I am currently taking a low dose of Paxil, which helps me sleep at night.
However, Paxil can be a ***** to stop, just lowering the dose made me dizzy, tweaky, and disoriented for days.
Maybe trazedone, used occassionally would be good for me.
With all of this stuff, less is more.
