Hey there


I pretty much live in a dreamworld inside my head and the only thing I really know how to do is write, and I plan to make this my life.

However, I was wondering if medication limits your creative side or the imagination of an ADD person? Because I know that I would not be able to write so well if I wasn't, how do you say, off the wall?

This is a really great question and important concern for many. As a full-time dreamer, :rolleyes: I find that the meds help me to focus and harness my creativity. I am able to be somewhat more diciplined and maybe :p more directed. I can still dream and create yet I'm able to move beyond this state when I find that I must compete in the real world and accomplish things/complete tasks. hope that you pursue your writing... there are writers on this forum and I hope that they can respond, since I would imagine that their imput would be more credible--I am not a writer.

Just to put your mind at ease......I was a writer before I got my ADHD dx, and remain one. I haven't noticed that it has an impact on my creativity. I think that sometimes we forget that taking meds for ADHD is going to help us make the MOST of our natural gifts. It isn't going to change the essence of who we are. Writing is a part of who I am. Music is also a part of who I am. I can still play the piano, still compose music and lyrics, and still write. All of that. I'm still just as big a nutty, outside-of- the- planet thinker as I always was......hmmmm......I hope that makes you feel better! If not you can let me know and I'll share some of my loonier thoughts! ;)

No worries...I hope it makes her feel better too -- it sure made me feel better!:D After being dx with AD/HD I had just about talked myself into trying the medication I'm pretty sure my doctor's about to suggest, but then I read someone who said that they're and Adderall and can no longer daydream. :eek: Losing that would be really hard, plus my creativity is one of the things that makes me special, inspite of my quirks! Music is also a huge part of my life and I like to write songs too. Your post was reassuring -- thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

My greatest childhood hero was Thomas Edison, and I wanted to be an inventor when I grew up (still do!).
However, this requires quite a bit of mental ability, among other things the ability to solve difficult problems, have a fairly technical background/education and concentrate for long periods of time.
Needless to say, ADHD can make these things very, very difficult.
It wasn't until I was put on meds for "depression" in 1990 at the age of 30 that I was really able to develop any of these skills: I was able to concentrate so it was easier both to learn and concentrate on difficult technical subjects, and I was able to keep working on projects for months and months at a time.
So for me, medications did not reduce my creative abilities at all, rather it was just the opposite. I was finally able to use the abilities I had!
