Hello all,

I have been having a problem with the pharmacy - at first they were giving me a full rx of 10mg DextroStat (it was only $4 more then the generic), and a while ago when I tried to get it filled, they told me that the DextroStat is unavailable from the manufacturer. They gave me what they had, and got the rest in which were Mallinkrodt, which were fine. He asked me if it was something I was going to take every month and he would order it for me, and so he ordered 3 bottles of 100, but that time, they were Barrs. I am not big on the generic vs regular thing, I always go with generics, I dont care, but these are crap. Does anyone know if Shire stopped manufacturing the DextroStat or something or is the pharmacist screwing with me? My DR said he wasnt sure if they were making it anymore either. Also got a few Spansules 15mg they were Barrs too, but they were deffinatley a little better then the 10mg tabs, but they are so expensive. 38 dollars for 20 pills and 90 of the generic dex is 44.00? Ouch!!

Never heard of Shire. Just started on this stuff--Dexedrine--what, maybe @ the beginning of Jan.? Had the BARR kind, got on here, saw the "BARR sucks" stuff, went "dammit," took it for a while so I wouldn't look like a junkie and get int legal trouble or something (this is a crazy state--they're nuts about amphetamines, even more than the rest of the country), called EVERY pharmacy in town and only one (Osco) had Mallinkrodt, not BARR, so I hauled by butt across town, paid for parking (there are 2 Oscos, but the one not by a parking ramp only had, like, 20 Mallinkrodt so I went with the crappy option) and the Mallinkrodt stuff is good enough to where I was on a semi-decent dose of BARR spansules (25 mg) but when I started taking Mallinkrodt, it was like *whoosh.* It was like I was taking another 5 mg, taking that stuff. Maybe 10.(the Ms, I mean.)

Basically, call around next time and get the Mallinkrodt. Sorry. My doc had no idea there was a big difference, but he could tell a few days ago, 'cause he was like, "Ok, you're connecting thoughts a loooot better. These people--you know I think this 'forum' thing is stupid--but guess they were right."

The Amphetamines are no big deal here. Heck, there arent even any triplicate type RXs here. But most pharmacies don't stock them. I could not get my dextrostat 10mg 150 of them yesterday, they only had 90. I too go to Savon which is Osco, and they were giving me the mallinkrodt brand but they ran out. I ran them out again, and they have to order more, and I hope to god they're not more Barrs. Dexedrine only comes in 1 strength, 5mg, but DextroStat (the same active ingredient) comes in 5mg or 10mg tabs. When I got the RX filled 150 dex and 20 spansules last time the spans were Barrs but this time, they were Mallinkrodt.. nice. I can only hope they do the same with the tabs :o)

I knew the two (Sav-On & Osco) were connected. Oh, for a minute there, I thought you were saying there were only 5 mg. spansules of Dex...I wouldn't know about the capsules. My doc wrote me up a script for 15 mg spansules, but I haven't filled it yet.

As far as I know Shire is still putting DextroStat out, at least 10mg because I just filled one today. We always have at least a single bottle of brand in stock (CVS).

There's so much brand/generic talk. This is CVS CII formulary, the stuff we HAVE to order from our distributors because they're the cheapest. Unless specifically requested (and unless you're a regular customer, it's going to be hard) these are the only manufacturers we keep in stock.

Amphetamine salts - Barr
Methylphenidate - Sandoz/Geneva - although lately we've been using Mallinckrodt's Methylin
Methylphenidate ER - Sandoz/Geneva
Dextroamphetamine ER caps - Barr
Dextroamphetamine tabs - Barr

Sidenote: brand-name Dexedrine Spansules, DextroStat, and even some doses of brand-name Adderall are not usually kept in stock unless there are regular customers already on them, and even then it's hit and miss with how many we have in stock -- so ALWAYS CHECK!! We don't keep them because of the expense, they take up room in the narcotic safes, and we lose money when they go out-of-date because no one uses them.

CIIs take a long time to come in, usually a week because of the DEA forms and tight controls. So plan ahead. If you're about to run out of a brand name CII, call ahead and make sure they have it.
