I have a prescription for Adderall dated about 11 days ago. I didn't fill it because...well...I guess I'm not as unflakey as I had thought...plus, I was anxious about paying the $100+ dollars (smart me, got the cheap insurance without prescription coverage before I realized I had ADD)...and I wasn't taking it on weekends in January and missed doses some other days so I had enough.

Anyway, can I fill it now or is there some kind of expiry date on Schedule II prescriptions? If it has expired, should I go to the doctor?

I know it's 30 days in MA but I'm not sure about other states.

As far as I'm aware - I think they are ok for a month . . but i'm not positive.

Individual states control expiration dates on Schedule IIs. In South Carolina, it just got changed to 60 days from the date written, up from 30. However, in North Carolina, Schedule IIs NEVER expire, but individual pharmacists use their judgement on filling anything that seems too old. Go to your state's DEA website or call your pharmacy, they won't think you're weird or a drug seeker, and would probably appreciate you asking them before you drop it off to have filled.

If you just got put on the Adderall XR, ask your doctor for a free trial card (I think it's called the Adderall XR Achievers Program). I believe it's only good once, but I'm not sure. I know Shire sponsors a program for low-income families that gives you 30 XR capsules every month for $5.

Thanks so much for all the information. That was truly a surprise. I really thought these things were determined by the DEA, since it's supposedly a controlled substance rather than a simple pharmacological matter.

OK, filling my prescription now.

In Texas it is very strict - perscription must be filled within 7 days of being written.
