View Full Version : ADD and Web Interface Design
Barb Price 07-22-03, 04:09 PM Hi,
I'm a student at the Art Institute of Colorado, majoring in multimedia
and web design, and I'm writing a research paper on how to better
design a web user interface for people with attention deficit disorder
(ADD). I have ADD myself, and quite often the web drives me crazy.
I've put together a short survey, and I'd greatly appreciate it if some
members of this list could complete it and send it back to me, with
any comments you have. The information you provide will be of
great help. Thanks for your comments and your time.

Yes. What do you expect from an ADDer? :-)
(2) Why do you surf the Web? (entertainment / shopping / other)
Entertainment, mainly... reading about topics that I find interesting.
(3) What keeps you at a Web site? (animation / graphics / info)
Depends on the sort of site. If it's a web cartoon or something along those lines that's done really well (e.g., Homestarrunner.com), it will be the animation. The same essentially goes for graphics; if they suit the format and content of the site, they'll keep me there. But if I'm searching for information-- and that's most often what I'm seeking, simple textual information that I can read at my own pace-- I want to be able to read it without a thick graphical interface or excessive flashiness in the way.
(4) Why do you leave a Web site? (boredom / difficulty finding things)
Most often, difficulty finding things; sometimes I'll leave out of boredom, but that's not as common. I also detest when designers don't check that their sites are accessible in browsers besides Internet Explorer... ::sigh::
(5) Do you leave shopping carts before completing the sale? (yes / no)
Not usually; if I want to buy something, I'll do it then and there.
(7) Do you use Amazon.com's one-click shopping? (yes / no)
No.
(8) Why or why not?
I prefer to go through the additional steps to confirm that I do really want to buy something. It seems like I could make too many mistakes (not to mention a lot more impulsive purchases!) with one-click shopping turned on.
(9) Of these Web sites, which do you like best and why?
I probably like Amazon and Google best; their interfaces are the simplest and most streamlined. Yahoo is trying to simplify its interface as well, but I still find a number of turn-offs, most notably intrusive advertising throughout the site. Eccentris is my least favorite; it obscures the content behind an overly flashy, slow-loading interface, which I'd excuse if I were simply surfing the site for leisure, rather than in search of information or in order to shop.

joanrdtobe 07-23-03, 06:42 PM 1. Do I surf the web? WAY TOO MUCH
2. Why? Mostly professional list-serves....some entertainment...Some travel arrangements (flights, hotels, rental cars)
3. What keeps me there? If it's entertaining or has MUSIC or graphics or good info or if it's EASY TO NAVIGATE....
4. Why do I leave? BOREDOM/TIRED
5. Leave shopping carts? I will occasionally shop online and yes leave a shopping cart.
6. Decided not to buy the product...or was afraid someone would see my credit card information.
7. No, not amazon
8. Just not interested
9. Yahoo....Lots of good stuff such as movies, jobs, horoscopes and plus they greet me in the morning...:) and they have cards.
So there ya go...do we get anything for completing this survey:) Just kidding...Good luck with your research:)
caplane 08-08-03, 03:22 AM easier for me to just sum up the web.. if it isn't minimalistic I don't bother. That is.. every site has be logically set up, no bs animation, no ads.. simple, yet too many fools think they are web designers.
