View Full Version : over-sensitive space cadet
spacegirlpsych 02-28-05, 06:38 PM :( Get this-
my med school class wrote a list of banquet awards and wrote a survey. one of the criteria was class space-cadet. So I got scared and wrote the class rep that i thought that it was rude and why don't we also have fattest and ugliest. I just don't want to be the class space cadet. maybe I caused a scene but i don't want to be class space cadet. do you guys have ways of reacting to people taunting you or ways to be more tuned in? I HATE IT!

FightingBoredom 02-28-05, 07:03 PM I was never VOTED the class space cadet but I slept through my share of English and History classes. I'm sure I was secretly voted the class space cadet by most. This was in High School. I quit when I was a Junior. Of course, all of my teachers said I was one of the brightest students. I figured they were just being nice.
The summer after I quit I ran into a girl from some of my classes in the spring. She asked if I was coming back to school in the fall. I said no, I can't handle it. Either I'm too spacey or just not smart enough, my grades only average C's in most classes.
"Not smart enough?" she said. "How is that? You were sleeping through most of the classes we took together, right?"
Yeah, I pretty much was.... I answered with a little embarrasment.
"And you were getting C's and B's for grades? Well, did you know that most of the rest of us were getting D's and F's in those classess? And we were awake the whole time! You really should come back this fall." she said as she left.
I was speechless. It still floors me to think about this nearly 30 years later.
I never went back to High School. Instead, I took the GED to get my diploma. I just walked into the district office one day and asked to take the GED. My score was in the 96th percentile and I didn't study for one second.
I'm STILL a space cadet, geek, nerd, or whatever else you want to call me.
And I bet I am still smarter and more useful than any two of the people that use to "diss" me in the hallways at that old School.
I guess I could have just said, don't listen to what other people say about you. It only matters what YOU say about you. And whatever you say about you is how you end up..........
If they vote you class space cadet consider it an honor that they had to create a new category to include your uniqueness in their little games.
If that doesn't help....then imagine what they all would look like in their underwear....when they're 90 YEARS OLD! ;)
matt99r6 02-28-05, 07:11 PM I am for sure the class space cadet. I'll just blank out what is going on around me sometimes..especially what the teacher is saying. The meds make me whatever the opposite of space cadet is. Some people tell me "wow you look like your really concentrating on this" or "you look so focused". I will just stare constantly at the teacher while he/she is teaching the lesson. So either way I stand out lol. I'll have to try and work on that.
spacegirlpsych 03-01-05, 06:44 AM lol, thanks guys. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one. I know, I skip pathology now and take notes on the textbook in my apartment, I just can't tune in for 4 hours at a time in class, even with ritaline. It erks me why people have to pick apart other's people's differences, even in professional school!! In high school I got good grades but was constantly taunted and had to audit physics b/c could not tune in. I thought I was just stupid. Not diagnosed until age 24! Maybe I should go into psychiatry and help people with ADD!
spacegirlpsych 03-01-05, 06:49 AM "I'll have to try and work on that"
I wish that we didn't have to try and work on being different. Yesterday I was in class, scared that people were going to attack me, almost more stressed about that than anything else, people are so critical. I wish that we didn't have to be afraid of getting attacked all the time. I don't walk around saying you look fat or ugly today like they say that i look out of it. Jerks.
Nucking_Futs 03-01-05, 07:20 AM You know I react to things like this much like Halle Berry reacted to getting the Rasberry award for her part in Cat Woman she mocked the living daylights out of them and their little survey.
I never cared for what classmates or the teacher thought for that matter. And now that I'm paying for classes, I don't have to do squat, except pass the course with a grade that is only admirable to myself.
Give me a break....WHO CARES about any of the idiots who claim to be 'Judge and Jury' of any of our encounters/situations???
You would've loved to see me all through high school (and sometimes still, even in my university classes).... I couldn't keep quiet for more than 15 minutes, and I couldn't sit still for more than that either !! At least I would've made you laugh constantly!!
Nucking_Futs 03-02-05, 05:20 PM I was voted class clown and everyone remembers it but ask them who was voted most popular and they haven't got a clue.

Futs, I think you hit the nail on the head with "they haven't got a clue" :D
Now, would ya stop clowning around!
Nucking_Futs 03-03-05, 10:44 AM I can't you all go down hill at an unstopable rate of speed when I stop messin with ya heads. *smiles happily to self* I was put here for comedy relief whats wrong with that? Beats the heck out of being put on this earth to clean toilets or something.
at_wits_end 03-09-05, 10:51 PM my med school class**** Maybe it's just me, but this is all I need to know that your concerns are unnecessary. Anyone who is capable of being in medical school should not be overly concerned about attacks on their intelligence or what their educational value is. Seems to me that any such comments can be filed under "you've got to be F-ing kidding, right?" and just laugh it off it you get that "award".
But I'm kind of a jerk(, nut, ninny, silly goose) that way, I don't give a rip what people say about me. You shouldn't either Ms. "i'm in medical school and will be living large some day, cruisin' down Route 66 in my jag"! :)

Nucking_Futs 03-09-05, 11:20 PM lol while I liked your reply I'm not sure that would be the way to go about the situation. How about just laughing and gracefully accepting the award in a manner which is more adult then the award was given...back door bashing and you'll laugh even harder when half of them don't even realize you got them.

LOL, I'm not actually suggesting that she tell her classmates to go F themselves. Just mentally place them in that category, i.e. their opinions are irrelevant. She's in medical school, what more does anyone need to know that she's a bright person?!?
People who tear down others are only doing it to try to build up their own fragile egos, "joking" or not. If she continues to look for self esteem boosts from other people, she's likely to be both disappointed and waiting for a long time. Self esteem only comes from within, and the sooner she dismisses "irrelevant entities" AKA jackasses from her psyche, the happier she will be.

FightingBoredom 03-10-05, 04:52 PM I'm curious about IQ statistics in the medical profession. Maybe this is for another thread but something spacegirlpsych said about not believing this happens in "professional' school got me wondering.
If the average IQ in the US is 100 (And it IS) then does the medical professional have people primarily from the upper half or a an average mix?
I'd say that knowing this stat would be quite revealing. I'd bet the avg. IQ in the medical profession isn't much better than the rest of the US. Of course, it must be skewed by having so many ADD'ers in it...otherwise it would be 99 or less :D
