I think I might have mentioned a time or two how much we know about the brain from studying people with Traumatic Brain Injury. This paper describes some of the phenomena related to the damage caused by injury. Did you know that the injury itself isn't as bad as the damage that spreads after the injury? Did you know that we have xenon in our heads and that it might slow or stop the cascade of biochemical rot from injury?

It's interesting research, and I can see where it might perhaps have other potential applications. In the present moment, though, it might be a lifesaving treatment for TBI, so it's a pretty wonderful thing.
