View Full Version : anybody know how quickly dependency will occur
munjaro 03-03-05, 01:50 AM I was recently given dexedrine from a friend who recommended it because I often battle with depresison and add. I started taking 50 mg tabs 3 days ago and loved it at first but now I want to stop.
However, I am concerned that if I do stop I might suffer from even worse feelings than when I started caused by withdrawl.
Anyone know how much it takes drug-wise / time-wise until the average person forms dependence and experiences withdrawal from this drug? :(
Gregster 03-03-05, 09:31 AM Not in 3 days, that's for sure.
Based on what 5 mg does for me 50 mg is a pretty good whack to start out with.....
Dependancy for me is best described as " The fact that I like how I feel" when I am using the dexadrine and when it wears off I recognise that I am back to my old self.......
I like the feeling I get from it so much that I would love to take it all the time 24 hours a day , but I feel it would loose it usefulness as that would become normal to me and I would not get the same results that I get by only taking it in controlled amounts.........
Dependancy is a state of mind as much as it is a physical craving for something
A little off topic from the original question but I agree with Gregster
that 3 days wont make you addicted but you may feel crappy for a day or so after you stop taking it, of which when you know that taking it again might make that crappy feeling go away ,
Thats where the addiction will begin
My opinion for what its worth
FightingBoredom 03-03-05, 01:32 PM I agree with both of these folks! 3 days is TOO short a time to become dependent. Especially with something that evacuates from your liver as fast as the "ine" meds do.
I'd also agree somewhat with Garry that dependency is a state of mind.
I was on Zoloft for more than 5 years and EVERYBODY said that the WORST thing you can do is quit it cold turkey.
9 months ago I stopped taking it. My wife still hasn't noticed any difference and I never felt anything from it or from being off of it. (FYI, my wife doesn't know that I stopped taking it. She thinks that she would be able to tell when I did! Jokes on her this time.)
Ritalin on the other hand...I've been on that for about 8 years. If I stop taking that EVERYBODY notices. Even Garry knows and he's halfway round the world from me! :D
fasttalkingmom 03-04-05, 12:56 AM Hmmmm..... I took Dex. for 2 years. I've not taking it in a year, when I stopped I had no side effects and felt fine.

hehe...that's funny.... :D
That's was me with Ritalin also....:D and Garry is such a pain about it also :D
I'm I in the right place?...... is this the Pick on Garry thread? :D
abre los ojos 04-03-05, 10:55 AM Depenedency occurs at different rates. I'm dependent on my job, my exercise. I'm dependent on light to read my books. I'm dependent on Television. I'm dependent on heat to warm my home, and go through severe withdrawls when its cold. I'm depenendant on my car, food, water, electricity, my grooming rutine, getting regular haircuts, taking a daily shower...and It doesnt take long for me to go through tremendous withdrawls when I am without these things...
Oh, your talking about dexedrine...exact same thing...
We are all extremely dependent to the things in our society. It's pretty ****ed up that we are taught to demonize certain things that are helpful that that our religious community has deemed as "Dependency." Yet its perfectly fine to over-indulge by the church in appearance, food, coffee and speding money.
Chadwick 04-03-05, 04:43 PM I've been on one stimulant form or another for over six months now and when I take days off, sometimes I feel mild fatigue, but today I don't (and I haven't taken my medication yet, it's 2:00 PM, not sure if I will take it today). Today I feel rather fine, actually, just not very productive. :) By the way, currently I'm on dextroamphetamine, but once a week or once every other week, I don't take it for a day.
Gregster 04-04-05, 12:43 PM On a Saturday or a Sunday, I often forget to take my dex - I don't feel any withdrawl or desire to take it. I usually remember when I start chowing down and realize I'm eating too much! I've been taking it for a year now. I was actually a little worried when I started taking it about dependancy, but have no worries now.
Dependency....WHOA NELLY...you are using the wrong term. Ditto for withdrawl. These are drug addiction terms and not terms used for theraputic levels of stimulants. I work in a school and see kids go on and off drugs all the time. NEVER have I heard a parent or students talk about withdrawl symptoms and this is even after 5 to 10 years of being on a stimulant. Ditto for dependency. It is possible to get psychologically dependent on a drug, but then again it also possible to be psychologically hooked to green peas or red crayons.

shinobi 05-26-05, 02:13 AM i duno..when i stated on dex i was hyper paranoied about dependency / addiction. mainly because i hadnt been clean for all that long before hand though.
i was told something very wise.
there is mental and physical dependency and mental and physical addiction. there are overlaps and differences and similaritys between each of the 4.
Yes there may be some overlap in the experience but if you have a mental dependency and addiction to red crayons, may this result in a physical dependency and addiction to colouring? I don't think so.

I don't think so.] never said it did although withdrawrl if a person is mental dependent can lead to physical symptoms sometimes.
QueensU_girl 05-28-05, 12:29 PM I assume that "50 mg" was a typo.
Sheesh, i only take 5mg QID (20 mg/day).
50 mg/day would give me a nervous breakdown and some serious racing heart.
rhapsody 06-02-05, 11:14 AM You need to build up to that level.. it only took me a few weeks to get there and it seems very high dose 60mg split up 3 or 4 times a day.. but its really worth it..
