View Full Version : Tablet or Pocket PC Best for ADD?
OldSchoolG 03-07-05, 04:10 AM I need something to help me with appointments, phone numbers, reminders, calender, notes, or whatever...I was thinking of a pocket PC or a tablet PC but never really used or seen one in person...so I wouldn't know what would be the best and ideal for me.
I travel to the city for school mon-fri...so I'm on the train/subways/taxis..always on the move...and I really need something to organize my life ASAP! I can't deal with the scraps papers all over the place anymore! I need to have something with easy access...where the calender is big and clear and easy to have notes written or what not..something thats really good with reminders...etc etc...
I definitely don't want a laptop too big and not really easy and fast access.
Please help I'm looking for the best device out there...thanks...
Coral Rhedd 03-07-05, 08:23 PM I am posting here not because I have the answers to your questions but because I have the same questions. How does a tablet of pocket PC function with a stand alone computer? Can you use most PIMs with them?
Think of a tablet PC as a digital notepad. Most come with a stylus that lets you capture your handwritten notes, as well as those you might type using the on-screen typewriter. Some models also come with optional keyboards & mice as well. You can run most windows applications on a tablet.
Pocket pc's are not intended for full application use, and due to their small form factor, are good for PIM type functions, like reminders, phone numbers, playing music files, etc.
I know I just touched the surface of what both types of devices can do, but hopefully you get the idea.
OldSchoolG 03-07-05, 11:45 PM thanks for the replies...but has anyone had hands-on experience with these? which seems more helpful? any model recommendations?
bnsforu2 03-07-05, 11:51 PM i heard sony left the pda biz.

Coral Rhedd 03-08-05, 05:48 PM Okay, for the beginner (me), what is the difference between a tablet and a pocket PC?
The palm PDA work great and is easy to use. I have heard other brands a OK. If possible get 32 k of memory. It will seem like a ton of memory at first but with time you will find some fun and productive ways to utilize the memory. I have been using the Palm products since 1994 and have been extremely satisfied.

I liked that feature if i were to get a pda.
But,
I am afraid I would forget to use it.
sounds stupid.
But, true.
Trying now to use 1 sheet of paper for days daily printout from yahoo calendar.
keep me posted about your successes .
maybe I will get one someday.
Wonder why sony is leaving pda biz though.
Heard this?
So i thought that mobile solutions like sonys other products
might be a trend?

gingagirl 03-08-05, 08:03 PM Does anyone have a link for tablets?
I'm just curious to read about them. Several of my students (who have limited speech) use an Enkidu tablet as a voice-output communication device ...I think Enkidu is the program that functions as a communication device, but the device itself is just a "tablet." I was told by our technology specialists that tablets can be used like computers, but I've never known anyone who had one --actually, I've never heard anyone ever mention a tablet except for the ones we use for communication devices.
I have the HP ipaq and sync with my laptop...but, I travel some and I've noticed that the screen doens't respond like it use to.
I always carry the ipaq in its case in my laptop case, but mabe it got too much pressure on the screen at some point and doesn't want to to cooperate now...who knows..

yeah i've heard problems like that about the ipaqs...DELL or HP Ipaq ????????????????? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Its close...
I have the HP Ipaq. I still use it for task items, down loading emails to read later, address, and calendar items. Other company software doesn't seem to respond as well. I guess it would hold up a little better...
I use the dell axim x30 and boy o boy it is fun!!!oh and if u drive a lot then get the x50 with the gps but u've been warned i have never used it!!!
What goes perfect with a pocket pc is a software called pocket informant jsut google it and u'll get something with a address of websis or something similar that's the one!
it works only on pocket pc not on the computer, there u gotta use good 'ol outlook!
howeveer, outlook can sometimes turn out to be a pain for adders!!! I personally use the Pocket informant cause it works best and i recommed getting the screen protectors from ebay (cost wise) and also recommend getting a hard case cause adders tend to drop stuf like me!!!
I bought an ipaq once but returned it, the reason I love dell cause apart from getting a good deal, I also got the wireless internet and bluetooth in it whiuch personally makes all the difference in the long run
I would agree get a hard case and make sure the screen isn't pressed too much cause these things are DELICATE!!!
marajade 03-09-05, 08:04 PM 1. Compaq Tablet TC1000 series (older model, detatchable keyboard) - GOLDEN. I'm lefthanded, and i've always had trouble with pda's due to this. I also run around like a maniac while i'm at work so I carry this thing around everywhere I go. It has a wireless card so I am on the network, and I run the franklin covey planplus for XP, sync with outlook, and am on outlook real time. Office 2003 one note is also on there, but since i got planplus i haven't used onenote (even though it's REALLY neat)
2. HP Ipaq hx4705 - I haven't used this thing since i got the tablet, quite frankly. It is a good tool, and i dont know if i'm giong to keep it. It's the really nice one with the 4" screen, but having a 10" screen is better. :)
3. Motorola V710 by Verizon, it's not a smartphone or anything, but the goods is that it's bluetooth. Bluetooth syncs with my ipaq, my tablet, my headset, and i have a bluetooth foldable keyboard from thinkoutside.com that syncs with anything bluetooth, so i carry a handy bluetooth usb adapter with me as well. it gets me on the internet from anywhere that i have cellphone service, so that i can connect to my work, the web, or anything my heart desires at any given time.
4. Sony Vaio PCG-TR3AP2 - the pretty little white laptop...
This thing is my pride and joy. It's fast, snappy to the eye, and it gets me everywhere i need to be.
5. 40gb ipod - what a way to keep me going and focused. :)
If i'm not multitasking, i'm generally bored, since i want everything done yesterday (impatient type), so the configuration i use in my office is, flat panel in front of me connected to my office pc, vaio laptop to the right, usually in a remote console to the servers (i'm a network engineer), and tablet to the left, for quick writing access. Various papers scatterred about and stickies everywhere.
I have to have a few different methods of reminders since i'm everywhere at the same time. :)
6. Sony noise cancelling headphones.... for when I REALLY need to focus and i'm getting distracted even with music on (when i don't want to wipe all data from a server accidentally because i'm busy getting bugged by someone walking by my office)
7. adderall XR + IR (lol) - don't leave home without em.
8. wallet and keys attached to the same lanyard. can't start my car without the wallet following me. :)
9. the sony vaio bookbag, which holds all of the above.
i can barely carry the bag, really. i have more cables in there than a data center has cables, and i'm a 5'3" 105lb female. the bag looks like it's carrying me instead.
michelle.
bnsforu2 03-09-05, 08:22 PM wow!
Thanks for the info michelle!
:)
glad i found this thread too.
OldSchoolG 03-10-05, 02:22 AM OK so I've done countless research to find my very own perfect PPC. I'm talking long hours of reviews, web sites, magazines, blah blah blah...I'm done and I've concluded.......
I've Considered the new VGA Models- Loox 720, Ipaq 4705, Dell X50v
1st BEST Loox 720
2nd " Ipaq 4705
3rd " Dell X50v
BUT! Loox 720 isn't available in the United States. I know I can order it over seas but what if something goes wrong with it and I need to fix it or whatever...so I don't want to hassle with that!
As for the Ipaq 4705 and the Dell X50v both are great but both have issues that I don't like, touch pad, and the X50v's battery life STINKS! I don't like or trust Dell! They buy cheap parts and make cheap mediocre products thats my experience since I've dealt with Dell over 10 years and their costumer Service well my answer is this: http://www.illwillpress.com/tech.html
I went to compusa got my hands on both the hx2755 and hx4705. After 2 hours of intense use of both models I concluded:
iPAQ hx4705
SLOWER
Touchpad SUCKS It didn't work well as I wanted it too and I've had touchpads in the past! (HP? what were they thinking? Its like they added a handicap for the user instead of making it better!!)
BULKY/BIG/HEAVY (Do I even want to carry this in my pocket? NO!! Does it stick out of my jacket pockets? YES!)
Only thing good about it is the VGA screen thats where people fall victim!
Lets just say the iPAQ hx2755 is the total opposite of the hx4755 in the best way possible. Say HP made the hx2755 with the VGA screen they would be flying off the shelves and the hx4705 would be collecting dust all day.
Finally my plan is simple I got the iPAQ hx2755, I'm going to enjoy it and use the hell out of it until................HP or DELL make a better VGA Hardware and Software PPC......then when that day comes I'll probably sell the hx2755 on ebay or who knows! ;)
As for the Tablet PC its nice but not really intended for what I need it for. Tablet PCs are good for teachers, doctors, construction people, engineers...etc.. but whatever.
My new PPC is almost done charging so later and good luck to anyone in the market for these...not an easy choice...but I definitely feel I made the right one! :D
Personally I use a P900 smartphone.
The way I see it, smartphones have a few advantages over PDAs
They're designed to be phone sized, smaller then the average PDA. This makes them more portable; easier to fit into pockets. But on the flip side it could be argued that the thinner stylus is more fiddley, but ive never had a problem with it.
Since they're partly based on phones, they often have a built in vibrate alert. This is useful whenever you need to set reminders for yourself, not the whole room.
Finally, they have a built in cellular componant, giving easy access to email, and meaning you dont have to copy numbers from a PDA address book, to a phone keypad.
Finally there's the advantage of only having to carry around one device.
The P900 is great, they're fairly cheap on ebay (as PDA's go), you might want to take a look at the P910 though. They've upped the maximum smartcard size to 1Gb, making it possible to fit a whole film on there, and watch it on the move.
(the only complaint i would have about the P900 is the slightly tinny sound quality when playing mp3's, but thats only to be expected)
Christiana 04-10-05, 01:07 PM To answer the original question - a tablet PC is (usually) a fully functional laptop, whereas a pocket PC, I think is somthing smaller (I don't know anything about pocket PCs but I know a lot about tablets)
I've been needing to get a new computer for a while, and so I did a LOT of research - I'm getting a tablet PC next week!!!!!
I am SOOOOO excited!! I'm going to start a new thread just for tablets becuase this thread has so many devices in it it's kind of hard to find anything you want to know ;)
Anyway if you're looking for somthing to replace a laptop AND be mobile, then a tablet is a good way to go. They are basically laptops with a screen that flips 360 degrees, and you can lay it down to write on it with a digital pen. So you can either use it like a regular laptop, or you can use it in tablet form to write emails in your own handwriting, take notes with drawings and stuff, take snippits of drawings and stuff using the pen to draw around it, and stuff like that. Using the software that usually comes with them (like MS OneNote) you can write directly into most other documents like Word and power point - i plan on using that next year to take notes in clss, becuase my profs all post their lecture notes online. The major drawback is that they dont' support PDF's (which most of my profs use...) so I'm hoping they will come out with some updated versions soon.
WHen i first read the descriptions I thought - WOW! It sounds like an ADDer's dream!! (or at least... my dream lol) becuase when you're doign things in tablet mode, you are using your HANDS and not just the teeny tiny movements with the mouse. SO to me that's just a lot more interactive witht he computer and it just seems SOOOO cool.
marajade 04-10-05, 01:20 PM what doesn't support pdfs? i can even convert word documents to pdf with acrobat pro on my tablet. onenote may not support it, but there are conversion tools out there. i read ebooks all the time in pdf format on the tablet. :)
Christiana 04-10-05, 01:49 PM OH! what I meant was that you can't write into pdf's with the pen. or at least that's what I read... appearantly none of the software programs currently support that (although you can read them)
but I havent' tried it - maybe what they meant was that once you've written on it with the pen you can't export it as a pdf? I dunno...
what are you able to do with pdf's? Can you store them along with other files in programs like OneNote or PlanPlus?
I'm sorry - I didn't mean that you couldn't open PDF's on a tablet!! Of course you can do that :) just like any other computer
let me know how you like your ipaq...i just bought my bf the dell x50v...and we were debating btwn just about the same ones as you were...and yeah, that touchpad on the ipaq sucks, lol
we finally decided on the axim...i just ordered it friday night for him, so, haven't seen it yet...but hopefully its good.
My dads best friend has it, and loves it...that was one of the main reasons we chose the dell too...cuz he's this big business man, and pretty serious about his technology stuff!
Maxwell 05-02-05, 05:30 AM I use an HP iPAQ as well. I have a 3115. It has been nothing but fantastic! PDA's are a life saver for someone with ADD. Especially a nerd who treasures electronics and won't loose it like they will a paper planner!! :p
sunnygal 06-10-05, 08:00 PM I tried the PDA, paper systems, even a laptop. Well, I just bought a convertible tablet notebook PC, and am in love with it! I recommend them highly!
My productivity and ability to recall information have tripled instead of just improved. My boss is happier with me, and my family can see how much happier I am with this new tool.
If you do get one, convertible is the way to go. I switch back and forth all of the time. I am heavily kinestetic, very inattentive and also have bipolar, and the switching between modes helps me maintain attention along with allowing me to use the planner with a pen, and then type emails with the flip of the LCD.
I don't know how I lived without this thing before.
Katherine
relvinnian 06-10-05, 11:46 PM sunnygal,
I have the same, and it's awesome! When I'm in a hurry or don't feel like I can sustain the attention I use the recorder and just blab. I don't know what I would do without this thing.
sunnygal 06-14-05, 04:53 PM Relvinnian,
I have not yet used the recorder. I'll bet it is awesome! Do you have a way to plug it into the phone lines - I tend to record teleconferences I participate in for work (they know about it and accomodate me) so I can listen later. Right now I use a digital recorder and download, but it would be so much better to do it straight to the computer.

SONYs PDAs are quality  even though they're not manufacturing new PDAs anymore, it would be easy to get one from the second hand market, amazon, ebay etc, well worth it!
