View Full Version : Ask Ane Column
aneededchange 03-09-05, 11:33 PM Welcome to the "Ask Ane" Section. :D
I created this thread after some members expressed interest in asking questions, learning, and/or reading about exercise and general health. As we all know, exercise is beneficial to everyone (AD/HD and non-AD/HD alike). For those with AD/HD, exercise can be a healthy outlet for stress relief as will as have a 'calming' mental affect. I have noticed, personally, that it often brings me a almost 'Zen' feeling.
I will post information, as my schedule permits, about exercise in all its variations – from the true beginner to the advanced. This includes such topics as: Pilates, Yoga, Weight training, Swimming, Running, Walking, Stretching, Cycling, and so on and so forth. I plan on also posting motivational tips and the like to help keep everyone active!
Please do not hesitate to post questions (or feel free to private message me if you are more comfortable and I will make a general post in this thread) and I will do my best to answer them as quickly as quickly as I can.
EDIT: To make this easy to use and more direct, I will be breaking things down into several threads. So that way, topics like Swimming will be under the thread Ask Ane : Swimming. Hopefully - that will make it easier on the people that are only interested in ONE of the areas.
Thank you.

General Disclaimer: Workout programs and health in general are within the scope of my current occupation and license. However.... Please note that I will not personally design an individual workout program for anyone - No exceptions to this rule. I do not have (or need/want) access to any physical (and so forth) limitations of said person, have a doctors consent, nor have had access to a full physical evaluation and medical history .... so it would be against my ethical standings to 'prescribe' a routine to anyone. All information I provide is general and should not be taken as otherwise. Thank you.
Nucking_Futs 03-09-05, 11:38 PM Cool new thread Ane and I promise not to ask for a personalized workout. I do however have a question. I walk after work with some girls and we are in disagreement about the length of time you need to raise your heart level to get full benefit and lose weight. I think we are holding ourselves back since our first stop after walks is the Crispy Kreme counter *blushes*

Most will say that you need to keep your heart rate up for a minimum of 20 mins to start the fat burning process.... So anything over 20 mins is fat burning time!
But remember, anytime you get your heart rate up (in a healthy manner - like exercise!) you are benefiting your heart. :D

Nucking_Futs 03-10-05, 12:03 AM I'd like to thank you for the information but just found out I was the furthest off and now have to buy all the girls a Krispy Kreme tommorrow. I thought for sure it would be more like an hour we've never managed that lol obviously since I'm still here posting...after an hour of having my heart rate I up I'd probably die.lol

Glad to be of some help.
Just remember - try to stay in your target heart rate for over 20 mins.
One of the most accurate means of determining target heart-rate is the Karvonen formula. This formula calculates a percentage of the heart-rate reserve, which is the difference between the resting heart-rate and the maximal heart-rate.
Heart-rate reserve = maximal heart-rate - resting heart-rate
Maximal Heart-rate is the highest rate a person can attain during exercise. While an electrocardiogram test would provide the most accurate MHR, for practical application an age-predicted heart-rate formula was developed.
Maximal heart-rate = 220 - age
This formula is based on the assumption that one's heart rate at birth is 220 and decreases by one every year. The accuracy of determining maximal heart-rate based on this formula can vary at any given age by + 10 beats per minute.
Resting Heart-rate is the rate at which your heart beats at full rest. It is recommended that this rate be taken before getting out of bed, counting the pulse for a full 60 seconds, 3 mornings in a row and averaging the counts.
Nucking_Futs 03-10-05, 12:15 AM I had to print the information so that I could keep it all straight but will start tommorrow. Thanks
aneededchange 03-10-05, 12:16 AM Fantastic!

Have you ever said anything that could have hurt someone's feelings and then claim it as a joke? I have a hard time with is it really a joke or are they serious sometimes and always apologize just in case... :( You haven't seen my sense of humor around lately have you?

bradylaura1 05-25-08, 10:50 PM Hi ANE! I am new on here so please bear with me because I have no idea what I am doing:o. Anyway I was hoping you might have some information or experience you could share with me regarding medications and exercise. My doc is making (seriously, she gave me no other alternative) me try Ritalin LA becuase I had developed a tolerance to Adderall XR. I am really worried about the change becuase I had such a horrible experience with Concerta and I have never taken anyother Ritalin-based meds. I have had some trouble on occasion with exercise and weight-training that I would say was med related; however, generally Adderall XR never gave me to many problems. I have tried Vyvanse and Concerta and both of these were a completely different story. Both made me feel weak, tired, sore and really upset my stomach on a daily basis. I have read a lot of posts where people comment on the "crash" and I see muscle soreness/weakness listed in the side effects for Ritalin LA so I was wondering if you may have any insight on this subject. Thanks so much for any information or experince you could share!
Cordially,
Ashley Brady
