View Full Version : Let us be more POSITIVE in our lives
ADDitives 03-16-05, 04:20 AM OK, I've come up with some ideas, because I was asked to think of some threads that would help us preteens, teens, tweens focus on some more positive things rather than focusing on what we DIDNT get done or what we did WRONG 24/7.
This should be the first thread in a nice series which I will be posting, and this thread is an introduction.
Please feel free to add your comments, voice your opinions, make suggestions for improvement.
I am in no way the leader of this.. I just happen to be starting it off, and have had some revolutions myself in my thoughts (even though I don't alwasyt think positively, i try to when i remember..)
One thing i came up with a few weeks ago (maybe a few months? dont know, time passes to quickly!) is the idea of using
POSITIVE LANGUAGE
and POSITIVE SELF TALK
What this means doesnt mean let's be all happy and cheery and flowery.... what it does mean, is looking at goals and what you want (but not like they try to get you to do in school)..
I will give you an example..
Negative forms of a concept:
I don't want to be here.
I wish I was not here.
I can't be here any longer.
I wish I was in a better place than this.
(etc)
Positive form of that same concept:
One day I will be in a better place.
I'm not at all saying don't acknowledge bad things, it's just a different way of looking at things, and you can see the same thing in a better more optimistic way. And the thing about the optimistic view of "one day i will be in a better place" is that it's motivating, and its like a set goal, and it shows that somethign can be done.
Sure its important to say "i hate this place, i wont want to be here", but if you don't move on from the negative form then you probably wont get anything done.
This thread can be a discussion of such things, and a discussion of positive things. I will start up some more specific threads such as
"positive people in your life" (rather than thinking about people who hate or dont udnerstand you)
"positive experiences from childhood" (rather than focusing on all the bad stuff that happened to you)
"three positives" (3 good things that you did/ that hapened/ that you experienced today)
i'll just start the "three positives" thread for now.
The overall aim of these 'positive' threads is to offset our negativity and bad experiences, and get us out of the downward spiral. We can talk about good things in this forum, not just all the bad stuff. :)
Nucking_Futs 03-17-05, 04:38 PM My positive today was after a very long, tiring day of housework and fighting with the kids to log on to the computer and see someone special take the bull by the horns. Very good ideas ADDitives I knew I could count on you.
Outtherechica 03-19-05, 11:40 PM If I didn't have AD/HD I wouldn't appreciate things like I do
I wouldn't be as happy as I am
I really feel success when I get it
My AD/HD has made me look at life in a new light and my struggles have given me a greater maturity
Nucking_Futs 03-19-05, 11:55 PM My positve is getting 12 loads of laundry done in two hours while painting my daughter's and my toe and finger nails...I'm good and thank goodness for laundry mats lol
someone's been slacken at my house *looks impish*
ADDitives 03-20-05, 02:26 AM lol, whats a laundry mat?
my positive is that im getting my essay done for tomorrow, and that in the last 3 days i've kept beating my record on my BM chart (by half a point each day).
Nucking_Futs 03-21-05, 10:23 AM That's great news!!!!
A laundromat is a public access building with tons of washers and driers so you can load them up and get all your loads done in one shot. Its great for slackers... lol
Its raining here and we so desparatly needed it for our new grass we layed I'm hoping it takes this time instead of withering away into stubble again this summer.
ADDitives 03-22-05, 01:15 AM ohhhhh laundromat. right i know those. i thought you were talking about some sort of towell for the floor of the laundry when you said "laundry mat". hahah
ok.
Nucking_Futs 03-22-05, 09:52 AM I think its pronunciation depends on your location...I've never heard of a laundromat but my mother says that is what they called them in California. *frowns* its ok you can call me a hick now lmbo.
ADDitives 03-23-05, 03:59 AM yeah... on american tv theyre called "laundromat", and in cartoons, and in australia the ones ive seen are called that too.
adhdxyz 03-23-05, 10:28 AM My adhd son and I are home all week on spring break. At the age of 43, I started taking Adderal XR last Friday. Today is day 6.
My positives are:
1) I am able to sit here at the computer and the house is quiet. My son is sleeping. House rule is to NEVER wake an adhd person. Let it be quiet a little longer. I better type a little quicker.
2) Thanks to my newly found Adderal, all the laundry is washed, dried and put away. Amazing. What a feeling of accomplishment.
3) The mail hasn't come yet, but to my knowledge, we have no utility disconnection notices. Thank goodness they created different colored envelopes for disconnection notices. Must have been an add/adhd employee who thought of that wonderful idea :)
Thanks.
Nucking_Futs 03-23-05, 12:59 PM My three positives are I only thought of choking the life out of my co-worker. thinking is way better then acting on the impulse.
Number two is that I laughed a lot yesterday with the kids, we had a lot of cuddly fun
Number three is that I've managed to teach Garrett his first sentence...he's most likely ADD and is often getting himself into situations were he could get hurt and am always saying the samething...ARe you all right?
yesterday he started to fall off his chair and I ran up and caught him and he looks at me seriously and says "yallaight"? It was jumbled but sounded clear. I laughed and laughed he so stinking cute.
ADDitives 03-26-05, 04:21 AM hahaha thats soooo cute! how old is he?

Dontcha just love when they pick up those little phrases???
Sam was in the backseat once, and we were in traffic, and...I'm bad in traffic. He couldn't have been much more than like a year old, or something--not very old, anyway--and I hear this little voice pop up from the back..."ath-ho." Greeeeaat.

ADDitives 04-03-05, 09:07 AM today turned out good.
i went to this great place called Whiteman Park. its a huuuug eplace. i'll tell you in a second.
james had a piping (he's in a pipes and drums band) state competition on today, so i went along with him. when we got ther he said to me "you can go for a walk while we practice'. i was a little.. well i was less than thrilled about the prospect of having to entertain myself, and the fact that i was expected to not just sit there and do nothing. so i took myself off down the track (i thought this was a sort of wildlife park thing... ) and i sat on a log and ate chocolate. then i went back. then i ran into someone from the band who is one of james' good friends, who happens to be female, but she doesnt really understand me or like me very much.
so then i walked further along.. and i saw a little kiosk, so i decided to buy an ice block. and i though.. "ok... ice block! (thats a 'popsickle' for you americans!) this day is a little better now". then i walked along with it, and i saw some cool stuff.. there was a tram (but i didnt go on it cause it costs $4 which it hought was too much). then i walked further, and there was this HUUUUGE horse! (clydesdale horse), and then i saw there was 'old town' sort of shops like a pottery and a print shop, and tehre was this inrofmation center.
so i went into the information center, and it was like thos cool museum display thing, with stuff about the history of th epark. it turns out, this park is 3600 hectares (couldnt tell you what exactly a 'hectare' is, but its more than an acre.... i'll look it up and get back to you!), and it used to be wild land with brumbys (a sort of horse thing) on it until a guy called Whiteman bought the park for everyone to share.
stuff happened, wildlife was preserved, there's the main water source for north perth under this park, and there's cool stuff. and now the ENTIREEEEEE place is still public.
and there was then a room with info on this Whiteman guy, and cool stuff about his faimily and how the were brickmakers, and that Whiteman was a pilot and a deep sea dver, and he rode horses and invented a new type of saddle, and then there was all old sort of stuff like a penny-farthing bike and an old kids rockng horse and a train lamp.
and in the print shop there was a really old fashion copy machine... it was HUUGE and it was like... 200 year old sort. it had big wheels all over it and knobs and roller things, it looked so complicated! (although ive never seen a modern printing press!)
so my day turned from
my god i dont want to be here in this stupid wildlife park thing ---> heyyy there's cool "olden-days" stuff here --> wow this park is a really huuuuge place with lots of history and cool stuff and its a great place that everyone shares.
i saw some cool stuff!
now before i submit this post , i'll google for you and find out how big a hectare is!
ok, found it on dictionary.com.
hectare = 10,000 square metres (a metre is a little bigger than a 'yard')
hectare = about 2.5 acres
