I've been playing with the lath making Turkey calls. This a called a Pot Call and used with a striker to mimic and hen sound.

This one is cool ! I cut the wood a bit on an angle to get the grain. It's has a copper top and under the copper is a glass sounding board to throw the sound. The striker is made of African Blackwood which you scratch at the top to get various sounds.
I hand rub tung oil on the striker while it is spinning on the lath

Nice. Lathes are pretty neat. Always wanted to own one.

Add their not expensive it's the gouges that get pricy. But after that all depends on the wood you you like and can obtain.

One of the nice things when I visited New Zealand was some HUGE! Kauri sculptures... they even had a whole spa bath carved from a single trunk... and a circular staircase!

The sap/gum is also pretty cool... I think there are fragments of it in this

those are beautiful SO!

I have a friend from long ago who works with glass on a lathe, Dave. I didn't really know you could work other materials on it, though perhaps only due to my paucity of personal experience. Everything you do demonstrates such talent. : )

Thanks Peri, I try my best at what ever I start. But I think about what I'm going to do before I start. Once I have the concept in my mind , I'm good to go.
