I am 27 years old and i have ADD I have known since i was very young but my mom never did much about it.I am now a mother of 2 and I have always struggled in school and i am now back in school and still struggling. My doctor gave me a script for Ritalin LA 20 mg 1 time a day to start tomorrow and i was wondering if anyone could share there experiences with this medication. What I am looking for is to be able to focus and beable to keep attention to read more then 1 sentences in a assignment before I feel lost somewhere else. Please be honest on what you think of this medication.i have never been on medication for this but I just finally said enough is enough i need some help and it wont hurt to try.At the rate i have been going i am going to keep failing because i can not pay attention long enough to do anything at school.i can read a paragraph and once im done be like "What was that about again"?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am about your age (26) with about the same number of kids (2) and about the same disorder. Although I don't have any problems reading I was wondering if you have kids home when you read/study. That can make the difference between 2 hours of work and 40 minutes of work for me when I'm trying to get things done. I went to college and used hilighters for major points then you can go back and read those. Even if you don't remember the 1st time you can go over the hilights and maybe something will churn up in your memory.

To be honest It does not matter where I am at i can be in a house with no people what so ever, read a recipe and have no clue what i read(just a example),its a terrible feeling.I cant even sit through reading something if im not interested in the subject but in school you have no other choice, you have a assignment its expected to be done reguardless if your interested ya know.Hope to talk to you again,i could ramble on for hours here but i know that gets boring also.Have a great day!

Hi Sandra! You are my first post. I am glad to be reading yours. I took a couple of classes about 2 years ago. At home I would study to music- for some reason it helped to drown out little distracting noises and helped me concentrate. I would go in my living room away from the family while my husband helped me with the boys. But one really helpful tool I used was the tape recorder. You have to ask your pofessors for permission first, but mine were very accomodating considering my attention problem. That way you can listen to your tapes while you cook, work in the yard, walk, or do your pretty boring chores. The other thing I would do is make flash cards and play "concentration" of all things (wink)! Be careful about listening to tapes in the car- you may never get to your destination! I ended up on the other side of town one time.
Good luck with your studies - I can appreciate how hard it is. Be proud of yourself and don't hesitatie to ask for accomodations.
Take care,
Annie
