I was told that you are to give what the couple paid for you and your guest to be there...example-if the meal cost $25.00 per person-you would give them $50.00...make sense?

A lot of it depends on how well you know your friend. If its a best friend and you can afford to give more and they are in need of the money then I'd say $100 not over. Basically, depends on your budget.

Actually, I bargain shop. There are stores where you can get a high quality $100 fry pan for $35. If you decide you need to give money then you run certain risks. Like looking cheap. :)

Or I always go online and find hotels that are a nation wide chain and pay for two nights in their name. They can use the certificate anytime they want and aren't really sure how much you spent...also makes for a weekend getaway when life gets rough.

Do they have a wedding registry? See what they would really need/like and fit it into your budget. If you are a close friend you can give them something more personalized, but if you are "good aquaintances" then something practical is appreciated.
