View Full Version : Help with summer job please!
I need a job for the summer...badly
I have NO clue where to even start...i've looked through classifieds, and i none sound appealing. I know that a lotta jobs are not even advertised, so i am thinking i need to find a place i want to work...and try and get hired there.
Now, my problem is, i dont know where on earth to work...i have NO idea what i want to do, and i have no major yet.
I could *probably* find a babysitting job, but i agree with my parents when they say that i need REAL work experience...i need to have something on my resume.
Any suggestions of jobs that wouldn't be insanely boring?
Oh, and the salary is not that big of an issue (i need to keep reminding myself that)...if i found a really interesting volunteering position, i could do that...my parents just want me to do something (obviously) while i am taking my awesome (not ) required spanish class in the summer
Oh, i am a college freshman
ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated :D
thanks!
aneededchange 04-05-05, 01:10 PM Well ... do you like animals?
You could volunteer at a local animal shelter .....
Or even help out humans ... volunteer at one of the soup kitchens ...
Schools love volunteers ...
i do like animals :)
while i do think i prob will end up in grad school, im not positive...so when i start applying for jobs/internships that actually apply to my undecided major...i dont want to be turned down for having no real work experience..
yeah, i like the animal shelter idea...humans...not so much...unless they are my age or younger...i dunno...i have a hard time dealing with adults in general...and i feel insanely awkward helping them out..i feel like its not my place...
aneededchange 04-05-05, 01:29 PM Okay ... then ask around - see if their are any animal shelters/non-profit orgs that help animals and ask if they would like some help.
it would show your school(s) that you have outside interests and that you are an active member in your community. :) I hope I helped.
Well I am kinda partial to the restaraunt industry being that I am a chef and all. I think its a great way to make money and such. I had a job in a restaraunt when I was in hs, when I didn't know what i wanted to do. Its a great way to make a living, and a wonderful way to meet people. Its good people skills and problem solving skills as well.
Just my two cents, take it for what u will!
i was talking to my dad...and he was discouraging me from a restaurant or retail job...
and also discouraging me from volunteering...unless it was at a place that would lead to something
Apparently when they were telling me that i could volunteer wherever, or work wherever...that only applied while i was in school (not summer classes, or the summer in general)
so now im even more confused as to what to do :(
Why is your dad discouraging u from restaurants and retail jobs? I am not talking about a job at McDs, but even that is not bad. The rest industry has much been thought of as a dumping ground for those that "can't" do anything else. This is simply not the case. There is a lot of money that can be made in this industry!
personally, im not thrilled with the idea of working at a restaurant...im bound to screw up...plus, i dont know if i could deal with ppl's attitudes...cuz i have a tendency to throw it right back in their face...
the more money the better, obviously, but, at the same time, i dont *need* it...its more about the actual experience...i think he was getting at the point that i should be able to put something more unique on my resume...but who knows
livinginchaos 04-06-05, 01:06 AM What about being a Nanny? a lot of parents look just for summer help. there are nanny agencies you can check out - google nanny agencies.
yeah, thats my backup...well, just a babysitter...ive been doing that for about 6 years now...
it's not a *real* work environment though.
I really appreciate the help so far...thanks for your input everyone!
This might be sneaky but with colleges they expect some type of "community service" so how about calling the local senior center and see if they have some positions that require you to do shopping and such for the older folks. Would fill the bill with
1. shopping (who doesnt like to spend other peoples money)
2. comunity service
3. would look great on a resume
heh...i have issues with older ppl...i try to stay away unless they are related to me...
and, i prob wont have access to a car
and...what do you mean colleges expect it? what are they gonna do if i dont do it??
ya know.. social norms and all that? He's only trying to help.
ya know.. social norms and all that? He's only trying to help.
im kinda confused as to what you mean...
i have a feeling ,my previous post came out wrong though...i was not aware that colleges look at whether you volunteer or not...and i am confused as to why they would...
i have no problem with volunteering..ive volunteered at diff places since i was 13
anyways, thanks so much guys for your input :)
First thing the mom in the name denotes a female. Secondly many elderly people will pay you to pick up things at the store. Third thing is that in order to achieve recognition such as honor society you have to put in volunteer hours. Forth thing when applying for scholarships (yes you can still apply) it is always good to list volunteer hours.
when i say guys, i refer to males and females :)
i dont think i would feel right having an elderly person pay me to do that...im really not comfortable with elderly people :\
i dont know how the honor society thing works ... :( im not very aware of my surroundings apparently
your post seems kinda irritated...i could be reading into it too much though...but, if you are...i really dont know why...and im sorry if i did anything to irritate you...i was only curious about what you said...
good news though...i found a new job posting for a photography intern...i'd work in a studio and learn about how it runs, maybe get to take pics...prob mostly doing office work...but i think it would be more exciting than just sitting in a desk ALL day...now to convince them to give me the job, lol
ya know.. social norms and all that? He's only trying to help. This is the line i refered to. Didnt mean to stir anyone up. So happy you found the new job posting. Go in and sell yourself.
I wasnt irritated just wanted to clarify what I had said.
:) okay good, just wanted to make sure!!
i was planning to go in yesterday, but i cant figure out how to get there!! our bus system has a plan a ride thing, and it didnt recognize the address...and its like 6 miles from where i am...so yeah, i cant walk, lol...id be a big ball of sweat by the time i got there...ive done it before...in 8th grade, my mom told me if i wanted to apply to work in a vet office, i could figure out how to get there myself (she was always workin during their office hours)
...it was a 6.5 mile bike ride in the middle of the summer...and i wanted to look presentable...but oh man, it was like 85 degrees that day, and i was panting and sweating so bad...and then, i was totally under the impression i could just fill the app out there...little did i know i needed my ss as well as other things that were all at home (who woulda thought!! :p ) so i had to ride HOME with the app...and it wasnt pretty, it got all crinkled...needless to say...i never heard back :(
so, yeah, i love pointless rambling :D
Perhaps call someone who goes in that direction daily?
i dont know anyone who does really...freshman dont really have anywhere to put their cars up here, so no one has them...and i dont know many other people, lol
ill just have to compare mapquest to the bus schedules and figure it out...i just didnt have a ton of time cuz i was trying to do it before class
Let me know what you find out.
