In theory, too much sleep will make you groggy. I work well around the classic 8-hour regimen, and if I hit 9, I'm a zombie all day.
And too little sleep will make you feel worse than if you never slept at all. For me, it's been better to pull all-nighters than get two hours.
Do you take naps? That'll screw you up if you're not careful.
 My extremely amateur conclusion would be that you don't get enough deep sleep for it to matter at 2-3 hours, but at 4-5 you get just enough to feel groggy. I bet even 6-6.5 would make a huge difference.
I feel your pain on this one, having fought weird sleep patterns since I was a boy.
