View Full Version : Ever hear of hyperfocusing with hair dye?
KnittingJunkie 04-10-05, 10:37 AM Yeah...my husband wanted me to dye my hair brown...it was red. I wrote an e-mail, may have left it in a biiiit longer than I should have. It's supposed to wash out...let's hope.
Chrys
p.s. He just woke up and declared (I'd already thought of it) that I now possess the exact hair and skin tone of Darlene, on Roseanne.)
Kimalimah 04-10-05, 11:01 AM It'll fade with washing...Whatever you do, don't mess with it anymore! It'll only damage it!

fasttalkingmom 04-10-05, 05:07 PM My hair is naturally a med. brown and I dyed it last week to a red. I hated it for days !
It has calmed down alot and now it's nice. So hang in there ;)
My brown hair went white after having bleeding ulcers when I was 35. Normally I keep it blonde because the white blends in with it well. This past January I got bored and dyed my hair burgandy...son said, I look like Sharon Osborne. In February I dyed it red. In March I went back to blonde, but not sure what color it will be at the end of April. Any suggestions?
KnittingJunkie 04-10-05, 11:26 PM Welll...don't know the weather in outer space, really, but if you're gonna be in the sun a lot, red's not your best option unless you use a ton of UV stuff...
I've used dyes to turn the naturally reddish tone of my hair, like, *pow* copper neon red...and it doesn't like sunlight, man...fades terribly. (Red doesn't look quite right with a tan, anyway--trust me on this. I have been tortured!)

Ichpuchtli 04-11-05, 04:02 AM what do you think of pink hair :p :o
KnittingJunkie 04-11-05, 05:01 AM No problem with pink hair...but, uh, the signature's kinda makin' it hard to see what you wrote there... It's kinda huge. And really hard to get past to read what you wrote with comprehensive ability (on my part, anyway...don't know about everyone else, can't speak for 'em.)
I've had huge signatures (made one on a graphics program) too...so I like it, but it kinda makes you squint and go...ok, that's not in any reference to the post...can't be...oh, look, there's a couple words up there! (On this one. On the last one I read, there were plenty of non-signature words! I think we can agree on that. ;) ) No offense, but...dude, the signature...
Chrys
what do you think of pink hair :p :o
Nucking_Futs 04-11-05, 10:26 AM My hair used to be so blonde it was white as a child and teen then with each child it grew darker and darker and now its this horrible brownish, red, blonde WTF color is my hair? So, Doug and I picked a hair color we could both agree on...he wanted red and I wanted brown...so we got a brown with red highlights and will attempt to dye my hair this weekend. lol could be interesting since the last time I attempted it I cranked out the best pink hair you had ever seen that quickly found itself hidden under a ball cap and on a trip to the nearest beauty salon.
EYEFORGOT 04-11-05, 10:42 AM I get ya! I've hyperfocused, gone to extremes and damaged my hair big time! In high school I played Frenchie in "Grease", so I put some crimson color in and that began my color struggle for several years. I then tried to go blonde using "Sun-In" so it was orange, then I used peroxide and with a perm quite a bit was white; then the iron in our water turned the back spinach green. I gave up everything, perms, coloring, even spray, gel and mousse for years.
This last Chanukkah we had a sock hop theme party so I decided to color the grays with a little red just for old times sake. It was very subtle, didn't cover any gray and was a big waste of time.
But I'm not cured. I have an incredible urge to go black. I also have some blue and black spray for those rare days when I'm feeling wild and need a couple of streaks.
BTW Chrys - you don't look doped - those are cute (don't hate me) pix.
KnittingJunkie 04-11-05, 05:04 PM Ahhh...hairstyle change addiction...there's no rehab but deep conditioning and a pair of scissors. No Betty Ford clinic for our poor split ends...*sigh.*
Dude, that's gotta be like the avatar-boredom thing. We should put a poll up in the Women's forum. Somone do that!
Hmmm..."cute (don't hate me) pix"? Translate for my brain-dead @ss, please...don't know why, but I'm extra dense lately!
Danke...

Ichpuchtli 04-11-05, 05:41 PM So if you have no problem with pink dye your hair pink.
P.S
I thought it was a bit big to.
A soft pink would actually look good blended in with blonde. Thinking going for a rainbow effect in June to celebrate the end of the school year...wanta ya think.
KnittingJunkie 04-11-05, 11:01 PM I think the "dye it pink" post was directed toward me...and, as we see, I definitely ain't blonde. ;)
Chrys
witsend 04-12-05, 04:33 AM KJ don't stress about the hair color too much. it'll fade in a week or two. I was really blonde & wanted to go darker (read more natural) --I went too dark & this is what I do for a living. I was freakin out!! :0 After about two weeks it was cool!! now I just need to get my highlights done..
auntchris 04-13-05, 03:22 PM I am a natural med brown with redish highlights from my grandpap. I have some grey. My sister tells me dont do it you will have to always do it. and it is expensive. Well I did dye my hair to get rid of the grey once and it was too dark form my light complexion. I liked it after 2 weeks when it alsmost washed out, wht the **** why do it then. They say the best hair cut is 2 weeks after you get it cut. I think the same with the hair coloring. It seem to tone down.

depends on who does ypur hair.... My clients are happy when they leave, most of the time.;) :D There's always gonna be that one....:faint:
Nucking_Futs 04-13-05, 04:00 PM Two weeks oh my gosh my hair cut wouldn't last two weeks without a chop job. "My lady" her name is June but she's been "My Lady" since I was like 10 and couldn't remember her name lol says that my hair grows like I wash with miracle grow.
witsend 04-13-05, 04:14 PM I have clients like that... I swear I can't believe how fast their hair grows!!
KnittingJunkie 05-17-05, 03:07 AM I was in my CP, remembered this thread, came back & figured I should give y'all a look @ the hair as of right now (seriously, right now)...though I blurred it, you can clearly see that, well, it really didn't fade...not much, anyway!

Ichpuchtli 05-17-05, 03:26 AM After all this you fianlly got what you wanted.
KnittingJunkie 05-17-05, 03:29 AM Not really. But oh, well. The summer sun will fade it a bit more, I'm sure. Only been a month & a week after all ;)
Ichpuchtli 05-17-05, 04:19 AM Oh I can't stand this hair thing much longer what is it with girls and hair?????? Why don't you do what I do which get up in the morning and leave it as it is.
KnittingJunkie 05-18-05, 01:38 AM Well then, quit replyin', goofball! (Dude, man, you're a multi-millionaire. Assuming you're not wearing a toupee, why not just hire someone to take care of the 'do if you don't want to bother? Come on, do you really wake up and just walk around with bedhead all day?)
Chrys
Nucking_Futs 05-18-05, 01:17 PM What I'd like to know is...
there really anything wrong with bedhead? I mean my hair is cut short for minnimum maintanance and looks best when I just wake up rather then when I wash and try to fix it. Now thats sad lol
ps this weekend I'm going to try dark brown with red highlights. Seems kinda fun and different.
My Mom did this when she was younger...she dyed her hair many many different colors. A different color in almost every picture from her 20's.
Nucking_Futs 05-18-05, 03:35 PM I generally just do it because my hair has no idea what color it wants to be and its irritating.
I started out a redredred head as an infant. Then it turned so blonde it was white as a child, with each baby I carried a new shade of brown was added. I just want a color I can describe lol.
stori813 05-18-05, 07:19 PM I always colored my hair just because I'd get tired of a color.
Until I turned 28 and found a gray hair.
I decided may as well enjoy my real color.
Before I have to start getting rid of grays.
By the way I plucked that gray hair right out.
Because no way is gray my natural color. hehe :o
Gourmet 05-18-05, 08:06 PM Had my first grey hair at about 25. It was a tragic day!
When there were too many to pluck, I kept my same color but it took
a Loooooooooooonnng time to get the process down.
I have a friend who's hair is perfectly beautiful.....silver grey and she wears it cut very short and with grace...it is very feminine and looks very pretty with her skin.
Someday when I am older maybe I can be so confident. I think grey is beautiful.
KnittingJunkie 05-20-05, 06:32 PM Ooh! I've done that before. Had chunky copper pieces framing my face. Loved it.

I know what you mean--what's the true term for "light brownish red?" Closest I can come up with is auburn. I dunno.
Chrys
KnittingJunkie 05-20-05, 06:42 PM I'm with you. I've met my biological mother, and if I go gray the same way she seemed to be going gray I'm dyeing it. It wasn't, like, a pretty silver color, it had brownish tones to it, and I didn't like it.
I'm here @ my parents' house...they have all these pictures of me, and I swear, y'all, my hair's a slightly different shade in each one. We have "Blonde baby Chrys", "Strawberry blonde little-girl Chrys" and on and on, and around 11 we hit the "Older sister dyed her hair for the first time and now we have no *******' clue what color her hair is really except for trying to analyze her roots every now and then Chrys" period, which has continued up to this day. 11 years old. My hair was sacrificed to the Clairol Gods at 11. (Actually it was some dye she'd bought on her school trip to Germany, but you get the drift.)

stori813 05-20-05, 07:38 PM :) Thanks Chyrs
The worst color I had was one summer after being in the pool and sun everyday.
My hair color turned from a Red to Clown Orange.
I used a brown tone to cover that up and my hair came out more Black.
So I just decided to go with that.
It was a lot better then Clown Orange Hair.
KnittingJunkie 07-11-05, 04:48 PM Well, I got sick of the brown, and it wasn't washing out, so I just got some stuff to strip it out with. It was pale orange--like the inside of a Butterfinger candy bar, sort of, maybe a bit lighter.
So, no, I decided with the olive skin tone, and the summer tan, and the fact that I have removed (almost) all of my peircings over the years and decreased the punk-rock-ness bit by bit, I wouldn't keep it.
I ended up buying this blue-violet stuff from a beauty supply store that was supposed to neutralize the orange, but didn't do much of anything. Then I got some ash blonde dye (it has a blue base, which I'm told will neutralize orange) and below is the result (just the hair, not the face...sorry about that. Camera's weird--the flash pales out my skin, so you can't tell how goofy the tan looks with reddish-toned blonde hair.)

Gourmet 07-11-05, 05:46 PM For the first time in my life I'm not fighting the red in my hair......
it turns a funky shade of red during the summer and I was constantly trying to keep it the brunette color that I consider natural.
When I worked as a portrait artist one summer at an amusement park, they used to call me "the little red haired girl" and I hated it. I called it "summer hair".
I've decided to go red.....an idea I've toyed with for a long time.
During the "dirty dancing" disco era, I used to spike my hair with irriedescent copper and wear earrings that touched my shoulders.
Now..........well, color my world with red. I have colored it 3 times in the past 2 months. Strawberry, auburn, and bright red.......which put me dangerously close to burgundy :D......don't worry, I know when to stop.
The funny thing is, not many people have noticed......hmmmm......back to the drugstore?
DaveHawk 07-11-05, 05:55 PM You all are funny, if your hair is the worst of your problems, I have flyaway hair it's so thin the wind blows it as it will. I like to think of it as wash and go.
About red hair I once had red highlites in my beard but the only gray I have showed it's ugly head in my beard and replaced the red.
stori813 07-12-05, 02:03 AM DaveHawk time to dye those grays out of your beard. ;) :D
KnittingJunkie 07-12-05, 02:42 AM Green? Blue maybe? Oh, come on, be funky, Dave. ;)

Can relate. I always had strong red undertones, and I used to dye it to be very definitively red-red--but it looks kind of funny with the whole "Chippewa tan" so I have gotten teased more than once. The tan's been darker than it is right now, but it's deep enough @ the moment to clash with red hair. Oh, well. Red's perfect in the winter--I spend half the year pale, and half the year tan :p
I'm thinking, definitely defintely go back to the drug store, dear--grab some dye that has "intense" written right on the box! :D

DaveHawk 07-12-05, 03:44 PM I was the king of funk at one time. LOL I had a gotee and it was long, I bradded it and long hair. Just an artist thing.
Head down no noncence mindless boogie !
Gourmet 07-12-05, 08:13 PM Oh wow....cool Dave! Way cooooool.
My husband's hair was past his shoulders when we got married......curly curly blonde and rock-n-roll.
Wow....waaaaaaay cool, Dave.
KnittingJunkie 07-14-05, 01:47 AM My husband had long blonde hair until about a year or a bit more ago, when he just got sick of having to wash it and condition it and stuff--the only problem is, he worked in a job with a lot of grease and stuff at the time, so he'd put baby oil in it, braid it, then come home at night and use ULTRA-STRENGTH DISHWASHING DETERGENT to take it out! And he very rarely got trims. It was actually quite nice after a trim, but generally scraggly due to the fact that it was, well, thin and blonde and being washed nightly twice with Dawn! Ugh...
